How much weight can a shower caddy hold?

We checked every caddy on this site for a published capacity. Not one has one. Here is what the category does publish, and what to do with that.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A shelf lined with shampoo and body wash bottles

The short answer

Nobody publishes it. Not simplehuman for its tension, hanging or corner caddies, and not the tile-mounted brands. The published load figures in this corner of the bathroom belong to other things: 4 lb for a silicone shower hook, 3 and 5 lb for Command water-resistant strips, 20 lb for a drilled robe hook.

What we checked

Every shower caddy in our catalog, on the maker’s own product page: the tension pole caddy, the hanging caddies in medium and extra-large, the over-door caddy and the corner caddy. Published weight capacity in every case: none.

That is not a simplehuman problem. It is the whole category. Shelves, caddies and shower baskets are sold on materials, finish and shelf count, and the number a buyer would actually use is missing.

What is published

  • 4 lb — Tooletries publishes “carry up to 4lbs” for its silicone Arnold shower hook.
  • 3 lb and 5 lb — 3M rates Command water-resistant strips at 3 lb (medium) and 5 lb (large).
  • 20 lb — Delta publishes 20 lb for its Cassidy double robe hook, which is drilled and anchored rather than stuck or tensioned.

Those three figures are the entire published record for hanging things in a bathroom, and the pattern in them is clear: the more permanent the fixing, the higher the number.

How to load a caddy without a number

  1. Put weight low. On a tension pole, the load high up is what creates the leverage that makes a pole slip.
  2. Spread it. Three shelves with two bottles each is a different load case from one shelf with six.
  3. Check the feet and the ceiling contact monthly on a tension caddy. Slippage is gradual, and a pole that has crept an inch is the one that falls.
  4. Do not hang a caddy off the shower arm and a handheld bracket at once. The arm is plumbing, not a shelf bracket, and nobody publishes a load rating for it either.

Why the absence matters

A bathroom shelf that fails does so onto a hard floor, often onto a tub, sometimes while somebody is standing under it. A published capacity would let a buyer choose sensibly. Its absence means every claim about “heavy-duty” storage in this category is a word rather than a number, and we rank accordingly — on materials, mounting method and warranty, which are published.

The same problem exists one shelf over, with adhesive hooks, and the published answers there are better. What adhesive hooks hold is covered here.

If you rent

Tension, suction and over-door caddies all rate Safe on our install rating: no anchors, nothing to patch. That makes them the right format for a rental even without a published limit — the failure mode is a dropped bottle, not a hole in tile. The no-drill caddies are ranked here.

simplehuman simplehuman Tension Shower Caddy, 9 ft

1. Most capacity, least documentation

simplehuman Tension Shower Caddy, 9 ft

simplehuman · Tension Shower Caddy 9 ft · best for carrying the most bottles

A floor-to-ceiling steel pole with adjustable shelves and a 5-year warranty — and no published limit.

simplehuman’s tension caddy is the strongest-looking option: a “Reinforced aluminum tension pole with high-compression spring and grippy rubber feet”, in “rust-proof stainless steel and anodized aluminum”, with a 5-year warranty.

What simplehuman does not publish is a shelf capacity. The pole is braced between floor and ceiling, so the limiting factor is the shelf bracket rather than the pole — and that is the number nobody states.

Tooletries Tooletries The Arnold Shower Hook

2. The one with a number

Tooletries The Arnold Shower Hook

Tooletries · The Arnold · best for knowing what you are hanging

Published to “carry up to 4lbs”, on silicone that grips tile or glass and peels off.

Tooletries’ Arnold hook is the exception that proves the point: it publishes “carry up to 4lbs”, in “heavy-duty stainless steel” with “100% waterproof silicone”, and it is “completely removable and reusable”.

Four pounds is roughly two full bottles of shampoo. It is also the only load figure in the shower-storage category we could find.

simplehuman simplehuman Hanging Shower Caddy, Over Door

3. Hangs from the door, not the wall

simplehuman Hanging Shower Caddy, Over Door

simplehuman · Hanging Shower Caddy Over Door · best for glass shower doors

An over-door caddy with an auto-tightening hanger, and no published capacity either.

The over-door caddy transfers its load to the door rather than a wall or a shower arm, which changes what the limit is about: it is the door and the hanger, not an anchor. The glass-door storage is ranked here.

Questions people actually ask

how much weight can a tension shower caddy hold

simplehuman does not publish a figure for its tension caddy, and no caddy in our catalog publishes one. Load the lower shelves first and check the pole's grip monthly.

do shower caddies have a weight limit

They must, but makers do not publish it. The published load figures nearby are 4 lb for a Tooletries silicone shower hook, 3 and 5 lb for Command water-resistant strips, and 20 lb for a drilled Delta robe hook.

can you hang a caddy on the shower arm

Hanging caddies are designed to, but the shower arm is plumbing and no maker publishes a load rating for it. Keep the load modest and never add a handheld bracket to the same arm as a loaded caddy.

what holds the most weight in a shower

Of the published figures, a drilled and anchored fitting: Delta rates its Cassidy double robe hook at 20 lb. Adhesive strips are rated at 3 and 5 lb, and a silicone hook at 4 lb.
