Shower niche vs shower shelf
One of these is tile work and waterproofing. The other is something you can put up tonight. They are only alternatives if you are already opening the wall.

A niche is part of the waterproofing
This is the thing people underestimate. A niche is not a hole with tile in it; it is a box that has to be integrated into the shower’s waterproof layer. Schluter sells its niche with a “pre-cut KERDI-BAND frame for waterproofing the transition of the niche to the adjacent wall” for exactly that reason, and publishes the niche itself as “Fully waterproof and vapor-tight”.
Get that transition wrong and you have water inside a stud bay, which is a far more expensive problem than a shelf falling off.
When a niche is actually possible
Only when the wall is open. Schluter’s niche must be “supported on both sides by the studs or other wall framing”, with fasteners along the seam at “12" (305 mm) o.c.”, and then tiled with thin-set mortar. That is a tile job in a shower that is already being built or stripped back.
If your tile is finished and sound, retrofitting a niche means cutting it, and that is a different conversation with a different bill.
Size, and what it will really hold
Schluter’s four sizes are 12 x 6 in., 12 x 12 in., 12 x 20 in. and 12 x 28 in., with the larger ones including a shelf to split the opening. A 12 x 12 in. niche takes a couple of bottles; the 12 x 28 in. takes a household’s.
For comparison, a tension caddy carries several shelves up a 6-to-9 ft pole. On pure volume, the caddy wins; on looks and on not having anything standing in the shower, the niche does.
What each one costs you
- Niche: tile work, waterproofing, a shower out of action, and a permanent change to the wall. It adds nothing to clean around and never falls off.
- Shelf or caddy: minutes to fit, nothing to make good, and a thing in the shower that has to be wiped and occasionally repositioned.
Which to choose
Build a niche if the shower is being tiled anyway — it is much cheaper as part of that job than as its own project, and it is the only option with no hardware on show. Buy a shelf or a caddy in every other situation, including every rental. Caddy against shelf is compared here.
If you rent
A niche rates Owner-only on our install rating, and that is generous — it is a building alteration, not a fitting. The silicone shelf, the tension pole and the hanging caddy all rate Safe.

1. The niche
KERDI-BOARD-SN Prefabricated Shower Niche
Schluter-Systems · KERDI-BOARD-SN · best for a shower being built or retiled
A prefabricated, fully waterproof niche in four sizes, screwed to framing and tiled over.
Schluter’s KERDI-BOARD-SN is the version of a niche most tile setters use rather than building one from scratch. Schluter publishes it as a “Prefabricated shower niche made of KERDI-BOARD that can be installed in both KERDI and KERDI-BOARD wall assemblies.”
It is “Fully waterproof and vapor-tight” with “sealed inside corners”, has a “1/2" (12.5 mm)-thick by 2" (50 mm)-wide integrated bonding flange”, and ships with “Screws and washers with the kits and a pre-cut KERDI-BAND frame for waterproofing the transition of the niche to the adjacent wall.”
Sizes are 12 x 6 in., 12 x 12 in., 12 x 20 in. and 12 x 28 in., and it must be “supported on both sides by the studs or other wall framing”.

4. The no-wall option
simplehuman Hanging Shower Caddy, Medium
simplehuman · BT1098 · best for textured tile and rented showers

what size is a shower niche
Schluter publishes four sizes for its KERDI-BOARD-SN: 12 x 6 inches, 12 x 12 inches, 12 x 20 inches and 12 x 28 inches, with the larger sizes including a shelf.
are shower niches prone to leaking
The risk is the transition between the niche and the wall, which is why Schluter supplies a pre-cut KERDI-BAND frame to waterproof it and publishes the niche as fully waterproof and vapor-tight.
