Recessed vs surface-mount medicine cabinets
A few inches of projection against a hole in the wall. Which is worse depends on who owns the wall and what is inside it.

The difference in one line
A surface-mount cabinet adds its full depth to the wall. A recessed cabinet hides most of its depth inside the wall, and costs you a hole to make that possible.
What recessing involves
Recessing means cutting an opening in the wall between studs and setting the cabinet box into the cavity. Before anyone cuts, three questions need answers.
What is in the wall? Supply pipes, drains, wiring and vent ducts often run behind a vanity. A cavity that looks empty from the room may not be.
Is it wide enough? Studs at the common 16 in. spacing leave about 14-1/2 in. of clear space between them. Kohler draws the Verdera at 20 in. wide overall, so check the rough-opening size in Kohler’s installation instructions before you assume it fits one bay. If it does not, recessing means cutting a stud, which is structural work.
Is it deep enough? The Verdera body is drawn at 3-7/8 in. deep. Measure the cavity before you plan a flush finish.
What surface-mount costs you
Projection, mostly. At 3-9/16 in. for the Maxstow, the cabinet is closer to your head when you lean in over the sink, and its sides are visible from the room — which is why Kohler supplies side panels with the Maxstow and lists a side kit for the Verdera.
It also needs solid fixings. Neither sheet publishes a cabinet weight, so follow Kohler’s instructions and fix into studs where you can. Why we never use adhesive for anything this heavy is explained here.
Point by point
Look: recessed wins; it reads as part of the wall. Storage depth: similar — the box is the box, wherever it sits. Install: surface wins by a mile; screws and a level. Undoing it: surface wins; filled screw holes versus a patched opening. Clearance: the same 3 in. rule applies to both — Kohler requires the mirrored door to clear the faucet by at least 3 in.
If you rent
Surface-mount rates Ask first on our install rating. Recessed is an owner’s job — it is a hole in a wall you do not own. How to ask for a surface-mount cabinet is here.
Which to choose
Recessed if you own the home, the wall is being opened anyway, and the cavity is clear and wide enough. Surface-mount if the wall is finished and staying that way, if you rent, or if you are not sure what is behind the tile. The cabinet picks are here.

Questions people actually ask
which is better recessed or surface mount medicine cabinet
Recessed looks built-in and projects less, but it means cutting into the wall. Surface-mount goes up with screws and is easy to undo. If the wall is finished and staying that way, surface-mount is usually the sensible choice.
can you recess a surface mount medicine cabinet
Only if it is designed for both. Kohler's Verdera is listed as 'Surface-mount or recessed'; the Maxstow is surface-mount only.
how deep is a recessed medicine cabinet
It varies by model. Kohler draws the Verdera body at 3-7/8 inches deep with a 15/16 inch door. Measure your wall cavity before planning a recess.
will a medicine cabinet fit between studs
Check before you cut. Studs at 16 inch spacing leave about 14-1/2 inches between them, and many cabinets are wider than that. If it will not fit one bay, recessing means cutting a stud, which is structural work.
