Are heated bathroom floors worth it?
The running cost is small and the comfort is real. The catch is timing: you get one chance, and it is the day the old floor comes up.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
What you actually get
Warm tile under bare feet. That is the whole benefit, and it is a real one: a bathroom floor is the one surface you stand on without shoes or socks, often straight out of the shower. A heated floor also gives off gentle warmth across the room, but it is not a substitute for a heater in a cold bathroom.
The running cost is small
WarmlyYours publishes 270 W for its 18 sq ft TempZone mat. At the US average of 18.34 cents per kWh, that is:
- About 5 cents an hour.
- About 20 cents a day at four hours — a morning and an evening.
- About $72 a year at that schedule, every day.
The four hours are our example; a programmable thermostat decides the real figure. For scale, a 1,600-watt ceiling fan-heater costs about 10 cents for a 20-minute run.
The install is the whole question
The mat is embedded in thinset and tiled over, then wired to a thermostat on the wall. So the honest cost of a heated floor is not the mat; it is the floor it goes under.
If the floor is coming up anyway, adding the mat is a small, sensible step in a job already happening. If the floor is fine, you are paying to demolish and replace good tile in order to warm it. That is where most people should stop.
When it is worth it
- You are retiling the bathroom floor anyway.
- The floor sits over a cold slab or an unheated space and is uncomfortable most of the year.
- An electrician is already on the job and can wire the thermostat at the same time.
When it is not
- The tile is in good condition and you would be replacing it only for the heat.
- You rent — it is the landlord’s floor, and it rates Owner-only.
- The real problem is a cold room rather than a cold floor. A fan-heater fixes that.
What we cannot tell you
Whether it adds value to a home when you sell. We have seen no published data on that, and we will not guess. What we can say is that WarmlyYours’ 25-year warranty is a warranty, not a lifespan figure, and that it is one of the longest on anything in a bathroom.
The cheaper alternatives
If the floor is staying, a towel warmer gets you a warm towel for the step out of the shower, and a thick bath mat takes the edge off cold tile for the price of a mat. The two heat options are compared here.
