Towel warmer vs heated floor
They both make a bathroom feel warmer. They do it in completely different ways, at different moments, and with very different install days.

What each one actually warms
A towel warmer warms towels. That is its job, and it does it well: WarmlyYours publishes surface temperatures of 122°F on average for the Grande and Huron. It also takes a little chill off the air around it, but at 90 to 155 watts it is not sized to heat the room.
A heated floor warms the floor. The thing you feel is warm tile under bare feet, which is exactly where a bathroom feels coldest. At 15 watts per square foot it gives off gentle heat over the whole area of the mat.
If the air itself is the problem, neither is the tool. A 1,600-watt ceiling fan-heater is.
The install is the real difference
A plug-in towel warmer goes up with a few screws and plugs into an outlet. A hardwired one needs an electrician and a GFCI-protected circuit. Either can be added to a finished bathroom.
A heated floor is part of the floor. It goes down before the tile, so it only happens when the floor is being replaced. Adding one to a finished bathroom means tearing up the tile you have.
Running cost, head to head
At the US average of 18.34 cents per kWh:
- Grande 10 towel warmer, 155 W: about 68 cents a day left on, or 11 cents on a four-hour timer.
- Huron towel warmer, 90 W: about 40 cents a day left on.
- TempZone 3 x 6 ft floor, 270 W: about 5 cents an hour, 20 cents for four hours.
On a sensible schedule, both are cheap. The towel warmer only becomes the expensive one when it is left on around the clock.
Which to choose
Towel warmer if the floor is staying, you rent, or warm towels are what you are really after. It is the upgrade you can do this weekend. Whether one is worth it is here.
Heated floor if you are retiling anyway and cold tile is the complaint. At that point, the mat is a small part of the job. Whether it is worth it is here.
Both if the budget and the remodel allow. They do different jobs and there is no reason they cannot share a bathroom.
If you rent
A heated floor rates Owner-only on our install rating. A plug-in towel warmer is the renter’s option, and a freestanding one needs no screws at all. The towel warmers are here.

1. Best towel warmer
Grande 10 Towel Warmer, Brushed, Hardwired, 10 Bars
WarmlyYours · TWS6-GRD10BH · best for warm towels for a whole household
Ten bars at 155 W, a 122°F average surface and a 5-year warranty.
The WarmlyYours Grande 10 is our pick on the towel side. It has ten flat bars with a gap at the top for hand towels, draws 155 W, and publishes an average surface temperature of 122°F. WarmlyYours backs it for 5 years.
It is the hardwired version, so it needs an electrician and a GFCI-protected circuit. Plug-in rails do the same job without the wiring.

Questions people actually ask
is a heated floor better than a towel warmer
They do different jobs. A heated floor warms the tile under your feet and only goes in when the floor is retiled. A towel warmer warms your towel and can be added to any bathroom. Neither is a room heater.
which is cheaper to run a towel warmer or heated floor
On a schedule, both are cheap. A 270-watt, 18 square foot floor mat costs about 5 cents an hour; a 155-watt towel warmer costs about 11 cents a day on a four-hour timer, or 68 cents if left on all day, at 18.34 cents per kWh.
can a towel warmer heat a bathroom
Not really. At 90 to 155 watts, the rails here warm towels and take the edge off the air. A room heater is a different product — Panasonic's ceiling fan-heaters use a 1,600-watt heater.
can you have a towel warmer and a heated floor
Yes. They do different jobs, and a remodel is the natural time to add both. Each has its own electrical requirements, so plan them with your electrician together.
