Bidet toilet vs bidet seat
The washing is similar. Everything around it is not: the wiring, the flush, the warranty, and whether you can take it with you.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks

What you are actually choosing between
A bidet seat replaces only the seat. It bolts onto the two holes already in your bowl, takes water from the toilet’s own supply, and plugs into an outlet. The toilet, its flush and its drain are untouched.
A bidet toilet — Kohler calls them smart toilets — is the whole fixture with the bidet built in. It replaces the toilet, changes the flush, and brings its own electrical requirements.
The circuit
Both Kohler smart toilets say it in the same words: “One dedicated circuit required, protected with Class A Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI)” at 120 V and 15 A. Dedicated means that circuit serves the toilet and nothing else.
A bidet seat asks less. It needs an outlet within reach of its cord — Brondell publishes 4 feet for the SE400 — and should never be run from an extension cord in a bathroom. If there is no outlet near the toilet, adding one is electrical work either way, but it is a smaller job than a dedicated circuit. What needs power and what does not is here.
Flush and water
A seat leaves your flush alone. A bidet toilet replaces it: the Veil is dual at 0.8 or 1.28 gpf, pump-assisted, and wants a minimum supply of 6 gpm; the Leap is dual at 1.0 or 1.28 gpf with a power flush.
Both Kohler models publish an emergency flush for up to 100 flushes during a power outage.
Features, side by side
- Veil: stainless wand, UV and electrolyzed-water wand cleaning, heated seat, warm-air dryer, deodorizer, motion lid, nightlight, touch-screen remote.
- Leap: stainless wand, UV wand cleaning, heated seat, warm-air dryer, deodorizer, motion lid, handheld remote, automatic flush.
- Swash SE600: heated seat, warm-air dryer, tank-heated water, self-cleaning stainless nozzle.
- Swash SE400: heated seat, tank-heated water, dryer, deodorizer, side-arm panel.
Kohler’s warranty on its smart toilets is three years. Brondell’s on both seats is one.
When a bidet toilet makes sense
When the toilet is being replaced anyway and an electrician is already on the job; when the look of a seamless, integrated toilet matters to you; or when accessibility is the point and the Leap’s design fits the person using it.
In every other case, a seat gets you most of the function for far less disruption — and it leaves with you when you move. The bidet seat picks are here, and whether a seat is worth it is here.
If you rent
A bidet toilet rates Owner-only on our install rating. The electric seats rate Ask first: the seat itself is reversible, but the outlet is a landlord conversation. The renter picks are here.

4 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. Best bidet toilet
Veil One-Piece Compact Elongated Smart Toilet, Dual-Flush
Kohler · K-5401-PA · best for a remodel with a new circuit planned in
Tankless, 0.8 or 1.28 gpf, a stainless wand with UV and electrolyzed-water cleaning, heated seat, dryer and a three-year warranty.
The Kohler Veil is the integrated version done thoroughly. The wand is stainless steel with adjustable spray shape, position, pressure, temperature, pulsate and oscillate, and it is self-cleaning with “UV light and electrolyzed water systems”.
Around it: a heated seat, a warm-air dryer, automatic deodorization, a motion-activated lid, a bowl nightlight and a touch-screen remote. The flush is dual at 0.8 or 1.28 gpf, pump-assisted from a tankless direct supply.
The requirements are the other half of the story: a dedicated, GFCI-protected 120 V, 15 A circuit and a minimum supply flow of 6 gpm. Kohler’s warranty is three years.

2. Best for easier transfers
Leap One-Piece Elongated Smart Toilet, Dual-Flush
Kohler · K-28529 · best for accessibility, in a narrow footprint
A slim, skirted smart toilet Kohler says is designed to support easier wheelchair transfers, with automatic flushing.
The Kohler Leap is the one to look at when accessibility is the reason. Kohler says it is “Designed to support easier transfers from wheelchair”, it is Comfort Height, and the drawing shows a body 14-1/2 in. wide.
It flushes automatically after every use, with the remote or a backup button as alternatives, at 1.0 or 1.28 gpf. The wand cleans itself with UV light, and the seat, dryer and deodorizer are all included.
It needs the same dedicated GFCI-protected circuit as the Veil, and it publishes a 35 in. cord, which tells your electrician exactly where the outlet has to go.

3. Best bidet seat
Brondell Swash SE600 Bidet Toilet Seat
Brondell · Swash SE600 · best for adding a bidet to the toilet you already have
A heated seat, warm-air dryer, tank-heated warm water and a self-cleaning stainless nozzle, on your existing toilet.
The Brondell Swash SE600 gives you most of what the smart toilets do, on the toilet you already own. It publishes a “heated seat and adjustable warm air dryer”, a “tank heating system” for warm water, and a “rust-resistant stainless steel nozzle” with a self-cleaning setting that “runs before and after your wash”.
It replaces the seat on the existing bolt holes, so the flush, the drain and the toilet itself do not change. Brondell’s warranty is one year.

- Power
- Standard outlet — the wattage and any GFCI requirement are not published
- Reversible on move-out
- Fully
Why: The seat itself swaps onto the existing bolt holes, so it is reversible. The catch is the plug: it needs a working outlet within cord reach of the toilet, and a lot of older bathrooms simply do not have one. That is a conversation with a landlord, not a drill.
Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. Brondell, Swash SE600 bidet toilet seat. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.
What’s wrong with it
It still needs an outlet within cord reach of the toilet, which many older bathrooms do not have.
What we can’t tell you
Brondell does not publish the wattage or the outlet requirement on the product page.

4. Best seat for a known outlet distance
Brondell Swash SE400 Bidet Toilet Seat
Brondell · Swash SE400 · best for bathrooms where you can measure to the outlet
Heated seat, tank-heated water, dryer and deodorizer, with a published 4-foot cord.
The Brondell Swash SE400 earns its place on one published detail: a 4-foot power cord at 120V / 60Hz. You can measure from the toilet to the outlet and know before you buy.
It has a heated seat, tank-heated warm water, an adjustable dryer, a built-in deodorizer and a side-arm control panel with a one-touch auto mode.

- Standard outlet — Brondell publishes a 4-foot cord

Why: The seat swaps onto the existing bolt holes, so it is fully reversible. The constraint is the published 4-foot cord: measure from the toilet to the nearest outlet before you buy, and never bridge the gap with an extension cord in a bathroom.

Side-arm controls rather than a remote.

Questions people actually ask
is a bidet toilet better than a bidet seat
Not for most people. A bidet seat bolts onto your existing toilet and plugs into an outlet; a bidet toilet replaces the whole toilet and, on Kohler's Veil and Leap, needs a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit. The toilet makes sense when you are replacing the toilet anyway.
do bidet toilets need a dedicated circuit
Kohler's Veil and Leap both require 'One dedicated circuit required, protected with Class A Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI)' at 120 V and 15 A.
can a smart toilet flush when the power is out
Kohler's Veil and Leap both publish an emergency flush that supports up to 100 flushes during a power outage.
can i take a bidet seat with me when i move
Yes. A bidet seat goes onto the existing bolt holes, so you can put the original seat back and take the bidet with you. A bidet toilet stays with the house.
