The best dual-flush toilets

The full flush is the same everywhere now. The small button is where the water gets saved, and the makers publish very different numbers for it.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

American Standard H2Option Two-Piece Dual Flush Chair Height Elongated Toilet with Seat and Wax Ring

The short answer

Buy the American Standard H2Option. It publishes a 0.92 gpf light flush and a 1.28 gpf full flush, a MaP score of 1,000 grams — the only flush-performance score among these picks — and it ships with the seat and wax ring. Check stock first: white was listed as unavailable on American Standard’s store when we looked.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

A smart toilet whose 1.0 gpf light flush saves less than the Veil's 0.8 or the H2Option's 0.92, for the cost of a dedicated circuit.

The light flush is the number that matters

Every toilet on this page has a 1.28 gpf full flush, which is the WaterSense ceiling most new toilets now meet anyway. The difference is the light flush, and the makers publish 0.8, 0.92 and 1.0 gpf.

Here is what that is worth, with our assumptions shown. Say one person uses the light flush four times a day, against a single-flush 1.28 gpf toilet:

  • 0.8 gpf (Veil): 0.48 gal saved a flush, about 700 gallons a year.
  • 0.92 gpf (H2Option): 0.36 gal saved a flush, about 525 gallons a year.
  • 1.0 gpf (Studio, Leap): 0.28 gal saved a flush, about 410 gallons a year.

Multiply by the people in your house. The four-a-day figure is our example, not a published one, and the saving only happens if people actually press the small button.

MaP: the one performance score, and who publishes it

MaP testing measures how many grams of test media a toilet clears in a single flush. It is the closest thing the industry has to an independent flush-performance number, and of the toilets here only the H2Option publishes one: 1,000 grams.

We will not rank the others on flushing without a number. A dual-flush toilet that saves water but needs flushing twice saves nothing, and without a published score there is no honest way to say which is which.

Gravity or pumped

The two American Standard models are conventional tank toilets. The two Kohler smart toilets are not: the Veil is pump-assisted and the Leap lists a power flush, and both need electricity to work normally.

Both publish an emergency flush for up to 100 flushes during a power outage. It is worth knowing that the plain tank toilets need no such plan at all.

One-piece or two-piece

Both American Standard picks are two-piece. The Kohler smart toilets are one-piece. If a one-piece matters more to you than the lowest light flush, the one-piece picks are here — though those are single-flush 1.28 gpf models. One-piece against two-piece is covered here.

If you rent

Every toilet here rates Owner-only on our install rating. If saving water is the goal in a rental, the shower is where you can do it without asking anyone: the water-saving shower heads are here.

American Standard H2Option Two-Piece Dual Flush Chair Height Elongated Toilet with Seat and Wax Ring

1. Best overall

H2Option Two-Piece Dual Flush Chair Height Elongated Toilet with Seat and Wax Ring

American Standard · 606AA002.020 · best for real water savings with a published performance score

0.92 gpf light and 1.28 gpf full, a published MaP score of 1,000 grams, chair height, and the seat and wax ring in the box.

The American Standard H2Option wins on the two numbers that matter here. Its light flush is 0.92 gpf, lower than any conventional toilet we cover, and it is the only toilet on this page with a published MaP score: “1,000 grams”.

The bowl is chair-height elongated at “16 1/2-in. high”, with a chrome push-button on the tank lid. American Standard ships “Slow-close seat, chrome push-button actuator, color-matched bolt caps, and wax ring” in the box, which is most of what you need on install day.

As a two-piece, it has the tank-to-bowl gap that one-piece toilets avoid. American Standard addresses that directly with a “Sanitary bar on bowl eliminates accumulation between bowl and tank”, and adds its EverClean surface and PowerWash rim.

2. Best skirted

Studio Skirted Two-Piece Dual Flush Chair Height Elongated Toilet with Seat

American Standard · 2794203.020 · best for smooth sides that wipe down in one pass

1.0 gpf light and 1.28 gpf full, a skirted base over a 2-1/8 in. glazed trapway, and a warranty spelled out on the page.

The American Standard Studio skirted is the dual-flush for people who hate cleaning around a toilet. The base is skirted over a “concealed trapway”, so the sides are flat, and the trapway itself is a “2-1/8 in” fully glazed passage.

Its light flush is 1.0 gpf against a 1.28 gpf full flush. American Standard includes the “Wax ring, bolts, bolt caps, and EZ Install tool kit” plus the seat, and it publishes the warranty in full: “Limited Lifetime Warranty on Chinaware; 5-Year Warranty on Mechanical Parts; 1-Year Warranty on Seat”.

Kohler Veil One-Piece Compact Elongated Smart Toilet, Dual-Flush

3. Best smart dual-flush

Veil One-Piece Compact Elongated Smart Toilet, Dual-Flush

Kohler · K-5401-PA · best for anyone buying a bidet toilet anyway

The lowest light flush here at 0.8 gpf, on a tankless smart toilet with a built-in bidet — and a dedicated circuit to match.

The Kohler Veil publishes the lowest light flush on this page: “Dual flush offers a choice of 0.8 or 1.28 gpf”, with pump-assisted flushing.

It is a smart toilet first. There is a stainless steel cleansing wand, a heated seat, a warm-air dryer, automatic deodorization and a motion-activated lid, and it needs “One dedicated circuit required, protected with Class A Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI)” plus a minimum supply flow of 6 gpm.

An emergency flush “supports up to 100 flushes during power outage”, which answers the obvious question about a toilet that needs electricity.

Kohler Leap One-Piece Elongated Smart Toilet, Dual-Flush

The one to skip

Leap One-Piece Elongated Smart Toilet, Dual-Flush

Kohler · K-28529 · best for only if its compact, transfer-friendly design is the reason

A smart toilet whose 1.0 gpf light flush saves less than the Veil's 0.8 or the H2Option's 0.92, for the cost of a dedicated circuit.

On a page about saving water, the Kohler Leap has the least to offer.

Its light flush is 1.0 gpf — Kohler’s wording is “Dual-flush offers a choice of 1.0 or 1.28 gpf” — and like the Veil it needs a dedicated, GFCI-protected 15-amp circuit. If you are going to take on that wiring for a smart toilet, the Veil’s 0.8 gpf light flush is lower.

The Leap’s real strengths are elsewhere: a 14-1/2 in. wide footprint on Kohler’s drawing, a fully skirted trapway, and a design Kohler says supports “easier transfers from wheelchair”. If those are your reasons, it is covered here.

Questions people actually ask

are dual flush toilets worth it

If people use the light flush, yes. Against a 1.28 gpf single-flush toilet, the H2Option's 0.92 gpf light flush saves 0.36 gallons each time — about 525 gallons a year for one person using it four times a day.

how much water does a dual flush toilet use

All the toilets here use 1.28 gpf on the full flush. The light flush is 0.8 gpf on the Kohler Veil, 0.92 gpf on the American Standard H2Option, and 1.0 gpf on the Studio skirted and the Kohler Leap.

what is a map score for a toilet

A flush-performance test result: the grams of test media a toilet clears in one flush. American Standard publishes 1,000 grams for the H2Option. None of the other toilets here publishes one.

do dual flush toilets work without power

Conventional tank models like the American Standard picks need no power at all. Kohler's Veil and Leap smart toilets publish an emergency flush for up to 100 flushes during a power outage.
