One-piece vs two-piece toilets
The flush is the same. What changes is the joint in the middle: whether there is one to clean, and one to leak.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

The joint is the whole difference
A two-piece toilet is a tank bolted onto a bowl, sealed with a gasket. A one-piece is one casting with no joint at all. Almost every practical difference between them follows from that.
American Standard effectively concedes the point on the H2Option by adding a sanitary bar to stop grime collecting between tank and bowl. Kohler makes it the headline of its one-piece sheets.
Point by point
Cleaning. One-piece wins. There is no gap behind the seat for dust and splashes, and on a skirted model like the Kohler Memoirs Stately there are no trapway curves on the outside either.
Leaks and repair. One-piece has one fewer seal. A two-piece has the tank-to-bowl gasket and tank bolts, which can age. We have not seen published failure rates for either, so the honest version is simply that it is one less joint to go wrong.
Choice. Two-piece wins. Among the toilets we cover, the 10 in. rough-in models and the dual-flush tank toilets are all two-piece.
Handling. Two-piece wins. It arrives as two lighter parts, which matters on stairs and in tight bathrooms. A one-piece is a single casting and a two-person lift.
What is in the box. It varies by maker more than type. The American Standard two-pieces here ship with a wax ring and seat; the Kohler one-pieces include the seat, but the supply line is sold separately.
The flush is not the difference
Both sides publish 1.28 gpf here. How well a toilet flushes comes from its valve, canister and trapway, not from whether the tank is a separate piece. The Santa Rosa uses Kohler’s AquaPiston canister on a 2-1/8 in. trapway; the Cadet PRO uses a 3 in. flush valve on a 2-1/8 in. trapway.
If flushing is your worry, look for a published MaP score. The H2Option has one; none of the others here does.
Which to choose
One-piece if you have a 12 in. rough-in, you clean the bathroom yourself, and you want the tidiest possible toilet.
Two-piece if your rough-in is 10 in., you want dual flush in a tank toilet, or the route to the bathroom involves stairs and tight turns. The dual-flush picks are here, and the 10 in. rough-in toilets are here.
If you rent
Both types rate Owner-only on our install rating. A running or leaking tank in a rental is a repair request, not a replacement project.

1. Best one-piece
Santa Rosa One-Piece Compact Elongated Toilet, 1.28 gpf
Kohler · K-3810 · best for the easiest toilet to keep clean
A seamless one-piece, compact elongated and Comfort Height, at 1.28 gpf on a 12 in. rough-in.
The Kohler Santa Rosa is the one-piece case in a single product. Kohler’s sheet says one-piece toilets “integrate the tank and bowl into a seamless, easy-to-clean design”, and this one adds a compact elongated bowl that fits a round-front footprint.
It flushes 1.28 gpf through an AquaPiston canister on a 2-1/8 in. glazed trapway, and a Quiet-Close seat is part of the toilet.

Why: Replacing a toilet means removing the old one, seating a new wax ring on the flange and reconnecting the supply. It is work on the property's drainage and never a tenant's change.

H2Option Two-Piece Dual Flush Chair Height Elongated Toilet with Seat and Wax Ring
American Standard · 606AA002.020 · best for dual flush with a published performance score
A 0.92 gpf light flush, a 1,000-gram MaP score, and a sanitary bar over the tank-to-bowl gap.
The American Standard H2Option is the other reason to choose two-piece: dual flush with a published score. It offers 0.92 gpf and 1.28 gpf flushes and a MaP score of “1,000 grams”.
It is also American Standard’s answer to the two-piece cleaning complaint: a “Sanitary bar on bowl eliminates accumulation between bowl and tank”.

Questions people actually ask
is a one piece toilet better than a two piece
It is easier to clean and has one fewer seal, because there is no tank-to-bowl joint. It does not flush better because of that. A two-piece offers more choice, including 10 inch rough-in and dual-flush tank models.
do two piece toilets leak more
A two-piece has a seal a one-piece does not — the tank-to-bowl gasket, plus tank bolts. We have not seen published failure rates for either type, but it is one more joint that can age.
can you get a one piece toilet with a 10 inch rough in
Kohler offers 10 and 14 inch rough-in kits for the Memoirs Stately one-piece. Among the toilets we cover, the models built for a 10 inch rough-in are otherwise two-piece.
which is easier to install one piece or two piece
A two-piece arrives in two lighter parts, which helps on stairs and in tight rooms. A one-piece is a single casting and a two-person lift. Either is a toilet replacement and an owner's job.
