Round vs elongated toilets
Two inches of porcelain decides how comfortable the toilet is, how easily you get past it, and which seats and bidets will fit.

Quick picks

How to tell which you have
Measure from the midpoint between the two seat bolt holes at the back to the front edge of the rim.
About 16.5 inches is round. About 18.5 inches is elongated. Those two shapes account for almost every toilet in a US home. The full measuring method is on the seat replacement page.
The comparison, point by point
Floor space. Round wins by about two inches of projection into the room. In a compact bathroom — toilet opposite a bath, beside a door swing — that is often the deciding factor.
Comfort. Elongated wins for most adults. The longer bowl gives more support and more room, which is why it has become the default in newer homes.
Flush performance. A tie on this pair. American Standard publishes the same 3 in. flush valve, 2 in. trapway and 9 x 8 in. water surface for both. Shape alone does not change how well a toilet flushes; the valve and trapway do.
Cleaning. Roughly a tie. The elongated bowl has more surface, the round one has tighter curves.
Children. Round is often easier for small children, whose legs do not reach across a longer bowl.
The seat and bidet question
This is the knock-on effect people forget. Seats are shape-specific — an elongated seat overhangs a round bowl, a round seat leaves the front of an elongated rim exposed.
Bidet attachments mostly fit both, because they span the bolt holes rather than the bowl. Bidet seats do not. The round-bowl bidets are here and the elongated ones are here.
If you are replacing the toilet and plan to add a bidet seat later, choose the shape with the better seat selection — which is usually elongated.
Before you change shape
Swapping round for elongated is not just a toilet swap. Check that the extra two inches still leaves comfortable clearance in front, that a door will not hit it, and that the rough-in is right — both toilets here are 10 in. rough-in, which suits small and older bathrooms but not a standard 12 in. drain. Rough-in is explained on the small-bathroom toilet page.
Both toilets rate Owner-only on our install rating. Replacing a toilet is work on the property’s drainage. If you rent and the shape is the problem, the seat is the part you can change — and only within the shape you have.

1. Best for a small room
Colony 3 Two-Piece Round-Front Toilet
American Standard · 250DB104.020 · best for bathrooms where you step around the toilet
Round-front, 10 in. rough-in, 1.28 gpf and WaterSense certified — the shorter bowl on an otherwise identical toilet.
The American Standard Colony 3 round-front makes this comparison unusually clean: American Standard sells the same toilet in both bowl shapes, so the only thing that changes is the shape.
The round version publishes a 10 in. rough-in, “1.28 gpf / 4.8 Lpf”, WaterSense certification, a 3 in. flush valve, a 2 in. trapway and a 9 x 8 in. water surface.
Choose it when the toilet faces a door, a bath or a vanity and those two inches decide whether you can get past it comfortably.

Why: Replacing a toilet means draining and removing the old one, fitting a new wax ring to the closet flange and reconnecting the supply. It is plumbing work on the property's drainage and is never a tenant's change.
Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. American Standard — Colony 3 round-front 10 in. rough toilet, published flush data and warranty. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.
What’s wrong with it
Less comfortable for most adults, and the seat, wax ring and supply line are all sold separately.
What we can’t tell you
American Standard publishes no bowl height and no MaP flush-performance rating. It was sold out on the maker's own store at the time of writing.

2. Best for comfort
Colony 3 Two-Piece Elongated Toilet
American Standard · 250CB104.020 · best for any bathroom with the floor to spare
The same flush, valve, trapway and water surface as the round version, with the longer, more comfortable bowl.
The Colony 3 elongated publishes an identical flush specification: 10 in. rough-in, 1.28 gpf, WaterSense certified, 3 in. flush valve, 2 in. trapway, 9 x 8 in. water surface.
Which means that on this pair, elongated costs you nothing in flush performance — only floor. It is the shape most adults find more comfortable and the one most newer US homes are fitted with.
American Standard publishes a limited lifetime warranty on the chinaware and five years on mechanical parts.

Questions people actually ask
which is better round or elongated toilet
Elongated is more comfortable for most adults; round saves about two inches of floor. On American Standard's Colony 3, which is sold in both shapes, the flush valve, trapway and water surface are identical — so the choice is purely comfort against space.
how do i know if my toilet is round or elongated
Measure from the midpoint between the seat bolt holes to the front edge of the rim. About 16.5 inches is round; about 18.5 inches is elongated.
do elongated toilets flush better than round
Not because of the shape. Flush performance comes from the valve and trapway, and on the Colony 3 both shapes publish the same 3 inch flush valve and 2 inch trapway.
will a round toilet seat fit an elongated toilet
No. Seats are shape-specific — a round seat on an elongated bowl leaves the front of the rim exposed, and an elongated seat overhangs a round one.
