The best toilet seats for potty training
The alternative to a plastic trainer seat leaning against the wall: a second, smaller ring that folds down from the lid when a child needs it.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
Two seats in one
Kohler’s brochure describes the idea simply: “The Transitions toilet seat accommodates both adults and children without requiring separate toilet seats.” The child ring lives in the lid. Fold it down for a child, lift it with the lid for an adult.
Kohler also calls it “the perfect toilet seat for potty training and beyond”. That is marketing, but the practical point stands: there is no trainer seat to store, lose or leave on the floor.
Check the bowl shape first
Kohler’s Transitions brochure lists both models, K-2599 and K-4732, as elongated. If your toilet is round-front, neither fits. How to tell which you have is here.
What makes it work for a child
It does not slam. Quiet-Close covers the lid, the adult seat and the child seat; Kohler’s brochure says it “won’t slam little fingers”. It does not slide. Grip-Tight bumpers “Add stability and prevent shifting”. It is easy to clean. Quick-Release hardware lets you “Easily remove the entire seat for thorough cleaning”, which matters more during potty training than at any other time.
Colors
The brochure lists White, Biscuit and Almond. Match the seat to the toilet rather than the room.
Fitting it
Kohler says it “Installs as easily as a regular toilet seat”, on the standard 5-1/2 in. mounting holes. Replacing a toilet seat is covered here.
If you rent
Both Transitions seats rate Safe on our install rating. They use the existing bolt holes; keep the old seat and put it back when you move.
Every pick in full
2 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. Best overall
Transitions Quiet-Close Elongated Toilet Seat
Kohler · K-4732 · best for elongated toilets in a family bathroom
An integrated child-size seat, Quiet-Close, Grip-Tight bumpers and Quick-Release for cleaning.
The Kohler Transitions seat is two seats in one: “Integrated child-size seat offers a comfortable, easy-to-use option for children”, folding down inside the adult ring.
Kohler’s brochure says the “Lid, adult seat and child seat close slowly and quietly without slamming”, and “Grip-Tight bumpers hold seat firmly in place” so it does not shift under a wriggling child. Quick-Release takes the seat off “easily from toilet for convenient cleaning”, and Quick-Attach hardware fixes it on.
On Kohler’s drawing the adult ring is 18-5/8 x 14-3/16 in. and the child ring 18-3/8 x 13-5/8 in., on 5-1/2 in. mounting holes.

2. Best for night
Transitions Nightlight Quiet-Close Elongated Toilet Seat
Kohler · K-2599 · best for children who get up in the dark
The same seat with a battery nightlight: three brightness levels, a 10-hour cycle and up to 12 months on four AAs.
The Transitions Nightlight seat adds the feature that helps most once a child is using the toilet alone: a light. Kohler designs it to “provide enough light to see the toilet without disrupting nighttime vision”.
“Dual LED lighting offers guiding light when lid is down and task light when lid is lifted”, with three brightness levels and an “automatic 10-hour nightlight” cycle. It runs on four AA batteries, with “Up to 12 months of battery life”. Plug-in night lights are compared here.

The one to skip
Cachet ReadyLatch Quiet-Close Elongated Toilet Seat
Kohler · K-4636-RL · best for households past potty training
Our top plain toilet seat, with no child seat, which is the point of this page.
This skip is about format, not quality.
The Cachet ReadyLatch is our best overall toilet seat: a hinge that releases the seat for cleaning, Quiet-Close, and fixing done from above the bowl. But it has no child ring, so a toddler still needs a separate trainer seat on top, which is the clutter this page is trying to avoid.
Once potty training is behind you, it is the seat to buy, and it is reviewed on the toilet seat page.

Questions people actually ask
what is the best toilet seat for potty training
Kohler's Transitions K-4732: an adult seat with an integrated child-size seat, Quiet-Close on the lid, adult seat and child seat, and Quick-Release removal for cleaning. It is elongated only.
do toilet seats with a built-in child seat fit round toilets
Not the Kohler Transitions: Kohler's brochure lists both the K-4732 and the nightlight K-2599 as elongated.
is a built-in child seat better than a separate potty seat
It is one seat instead of two: nothing to store or swap, and Kohler's Quiet-Close covers the child seat too. A separate trainer seat can move between toilets; a built-in one stays put.
how do you clean a toilet seat with a child seat
Take it off. Kohler's Quick-Release hardware lets you remove the entire Transitions seat for thorough cleaning.
