The best bathroom night lights
The 2 a.m. trip is when bathroom lighting matters most, and the overhead switch is the worst possible answer to it.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

Why a night light beats the switch
The overhead light is designed to light a whole bathroom. At night, that is exactly the problem: it is far more light than you need to find the toilet. A night light gives just enough to see by.
Kohler states the intent plainly for its Transitions nightlight seat: light intensity “designed to provide enough light to see the toilet without disrupting nighttime vision”. That is the standard to hold every product here to.
How much light is enough
Nobody publishes a standard, and we will not invent one. For scale, the plug-ins here publish 25 to 40 lumens. A single vanity socket on Kohler’s Memoirs sconce is rated for up to 1,600. A night light is meant to be dim.
The two sensors, and why you want both
A light sensor (dusk to dawn) means the light is on when it is dark and off during the day, without you remembering. A motion sensor means it brightens or switches on when someone moves. All three GE lights here combine both.
The difference is what happens before you move. The Motion-Select and Dynamic Motion sit at a low level and step up; the UltraBrite waits in the dark. In a bathroom, the low glow is what lets you find the door.
Where to put it
Use an outlet away from the tub and shower. If the only outlet is beside the sink, the Dynamic Motion is the one with a published damp rating. If there is no outlet anywhere useful, put the light on the toilet instead with a nightlight seat.
What they cost to run
Very little. GE publishes 1 W for the Dynamic Motion: at 12 hours a night and 18.34 cents per kWh, that is about 80 cents a year. GE does not publish wattage for the other two.
If you rent
Every light here rates Safe on our install rating. The plug-ins come out of the wall, and the seat goes back to the original on the existing bolts. More no-tool upgrades are here.
Every pick in full
3 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.
1. Best overall
GE Motion-Select LED Night Light
GE (Jasco) · 58559 · best for most bathrooms with a free outlet
Dusk-to-dawn plus motion boost to 40 lumens at a warm 3000K, with a choice of two modes.
The GE Motion-Select LED Night Light does the two things a bathroom night light should. A light sensor turns it on at dusk and off at dawn, and a motion sensor brightens it when someone walks in.
GE lets you choose how that works: “Motion-Boost Mode (brightness increases from low to high when motion is detected) or Motion-Activated Mode”. Boost mode is the one we would use: a faint glow to find the door, then more light once you are in.
It tops out at “40 lumens max” in a soft white 3000K, it “turns OFF after 90 seconds” without motion, and it is UL listed.

2. Best for a damp spot
GE LED Dynamic Motion Night Light
GE Lighting · 93132573 · best for an outlet near the sink
The only one here with a published damp rating, a 1 W draw and a 5-year warranty.
The GE LED Dynamic Motion Night Light earns its place on one line of its specification: a humidity rating of “Damp”. In a bathroom, where the only outlet is often beside the sink, that is worth having.
It gives 25 lumens with a “Two-Level Output by Motion Detection”, turns itself on and off with the daylight, and draws 1 W — about 80 cents a year at 12 hours a night. GE backs it for 5 years.

3. Best for the toilet itself
Cachet Nightlight ReadyLatch Quiet-Close Elongated Toilet Seat
Kohler · K-75796-RL · best for bathrooms with no outlet in the right place
A battery nightlight built into a Quiet-Close seat, with three brightness levels and a 10-hour cycle.
The Kohler Cachet Nightlight seat puts the light exactly where the late-night trip is headed. Kohler describes “Dual LED lighting offers guiding light when lid is down and task light when lid is lifted”, with three brightness levels and an automatic 10-hour nightlight cycle.
It runs on four AA batteries — Kohler says up to 12 months — so it needs no outlet at all. For a family bathroom, Kohler makes a version with a built-in child seat, covered on the potty-training seat page.

The one to skip
GE UltraBrite Motion Activated LED Night Light
GE (Jasco) · 29844 · best for hallways, where a burst of light is welcome
No published low setting: it stays off until it sees you, then comes on at 40 lumens.
The GE UltraBrite Motion Activated light is a sensible hallway light and a worse bathroom one.
It has a good sensor — GE publishes detection “up to 25 feet away” and a 90-second shut-off — and a limited lifetime warranty. But as its name says, it is motion-activated, and GE publishes no low-glow mode: it sits dark until you move, then comes on at 40 lumens.
The Motion-Select gives you the same 40 lumens with the option of a low glow first. GE also publishes no color temperature for the UltraBrite, and it was out of stock when we checked.

Questions people actually ask
what is the best night light for a bathroom
One that combines a dusk-to-dawn sensor with a motion boost, so it glows low and brightens when you walk in. GE's Motion-Select does both and reaches 40 lumens at a warm 3000K.
how bright should a bathroom night light be
There is no published standard. The plug-in lights here publish 25 to 40 lumens, which is enough to find your way without the glare of the main light.
can you put a night light in a bathroom outlet
Yes, but choose an outlet away from the tub and shower. GE's Dynamic Motion night light publishes a damp rating, which the others here do not.
is there a toilet seat with a night light
Yes. Kohler's Cachet Nightlight seat runs on four AA batteries, with three brightness levels and an automatic 10-hour cycle, and needs no outlet.
