The best bathroom vanity light bulbs
You do not need a new fixture to see your face properly. You need the right number on the box, and it is not the one printed biggest.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks

Read CRI before anything else
Color rendering index, or CRI, is how faithfully a light shows colors compared with a reference source. At a vanity, it decides whether foundation matches, whether a shave looks clean, and whether you look well or gray. Three of these bulbs publish CRI 90; the fourth publishes 80.
The difference between 80 and 90 is the reason to change bulbs in a fixture that already works. It is also why dedicated makeup mirrors make so much of their CRI figures.
Lumens, not watts
With LED bulbs, watts tell you what you pay, not what you see. The “60-watt replacement” on the box is a brightness equivalence; the number that matters is lumens. Every bulb we recommend gives 500 lumens. A three-bulb vanity bar fitted with them gives about 1,500 lumens in total.
Warm or daylight
2700K is warm white, close to old incandescent bulbs. 5000K is daylight white. With CRI held at 90, neither is more accurate; they are different moods. The practical rule is to match the rest of the bathroom, and never mix color temperatures in one fixture.
G25 is a shape, and your fixture decides it
G25 means a globe 25 eighths of an inch across — about 3-1/8 in. Check that your fixture takes a medium base and has room for a globe that size. Some fixtures specify a shape: Kohler says its Memoirs sconce “works best with type G light bulbs”, while its Artifacts sconce recommends a T10 tube. The fixtures are covered here.
Check the fixture’s maximum too. Kohler’s Orime sockets are rated at just 9 W; every bulb here is under that.
What they cost to run
At three hours a day — GE’s own basis — and the US average of 18.34 cents per kWh, a 5-watt Reveal costs about $1 a year. A 5.5-watt Refresh or Relax is about $1.10. A four-bulb vanity bar is about $4 a year. The Classic LED saves you about 30 cents a bulb, and costs you half the light.
Dimming
All four are sold as dimmable. On a dimmer, the switch needs to be rated for LED loads, or you may get flicker or buzz. That is the switch, not the bulb.
If you rent
This is the most renter-safe lighting upgrade there is. Every bulb here rates Safe on our install rating: no tools, no wiring, and the old bulbs go back in when you move. More no-tool upgrades are here.
Every pick in full
3 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.
1. Best overall
GE Reveal HD+ LED G25 Vanity Globe Bulbs, 60-Watt Replacement (2 Pack)
GE Lighting · Reveal HD+ G25, 60 W replacement · best for accurate, warm light for makeup and shaving
500 lumens, CRI 90 and 2700K from 5 watts, dimmable, with a published life and a 5-year warranty.
GE Reveal HD+ G25 globe bulbs are the pick because GE publishes every number that matters, and they are all good ones.
Each bulb gives “500lm” at 2700K from 5 watts — GE sells it as a 60-watt replacement — with a CRI of 90. It is dimmable (“Yes with Dimmer Switch”), uses a medium base, and GE rates it at “13.7 years” at three hours a day, with a 5-year warranty.
At three hours a day, one bulb costs about a dollar a year to run at the US average electricity rate.

2. Best daylight
GE Refresh HD LED G25 Vanity Globe Bulbs, 60-Watt Replacement, Daylight (2 Pack)
GE Lighting · Refresh HD G25, 60 W replacement · best for bright, cool light for doing makeup
The same 500 lumens and CRI 90 at a daylight 5000K, from 5.5 watts.
GE Refresh HD G25 bulbs are the daylight version: “500lm”, CRI 90, and 5000K from 5.5 watts.
5000K is a cooler, whiter light than the warm 2700K of the Reveal. Some people prefer it for makeup because it is closer to daylight; others find it harsh first thing in the morning. The color rendering is the same, so it is a genuine matter of taste.
Dimmable, medium base, 5-year warranty.

3. Best like-for-like alternative
GE Relax HD LED G25 Vanity Globe Bulbs, 60-Watt Replacement, Soft White (2 Pack)
GE Lighting · Relax HD G25, 60 W replacement · best for when the reveal is out of stock
The same 2700K, CRI 90 and 500 lumens as the Reveal, at 5.5 watts.
GE Relax HD G25 bulbs publish the same headline numbers as the Reveal: “500lm”, 2700K and CRI 90, at 5.5 watts instead of 5.
On published figures, that makes it a straight substitute. Buy whichever is in stock, and do not mix the two in one fixture in case the tints differ.

The one to skip
GE Classic LED G25 Vanity Globe Bulbs, 25-Watt Replacement, Soft White (2 Pack)
GE Lighting · Classic LED G25, 25 W replacement · best for decorative fixtures that are not your task light
Half the light at 250 lumens, and CRI 80 — fine in a hallway, wrong at a mirror.
GE’s own Classic LED G25 is the clearest illustration of what to avoid at a mirror.
It gives “250lm” from 3.5 watts — GE calls it a 25-watt replacement — and its CRI is 80. That is half the light of the other three, with noticeably weaker color rendering.
It is dimmable and GE rates it for 13.7 years, so it is not a bad bulb. It is a bad vanity bulb. The savings are tiny too: about 70 cents a year against a dollar for the Reveal.

Questions people actually ask
what color temperature is best for a bathroom vanity
It is a preference, as long as the color rendering is good. 2700K is warm white and 5000K is daylight white; GE's Reveal HD+ and Refresh HD both publish CRI 90 at those temperatures. Match the rest of the room and do not mix them in one fixture.
what does cri mean on a light bulb
Color rendering index: how accurately the light shows colors against a reference source. For a vanity, look for CRI 90. GE's Classic LED G25 is CRI 80, which is why we skip it for mirrors.
how many lumens for a bathroom vanity
There is no published standard. Each bulb we recommend gives 500 lumens, so a three-bulb vanity bar gives about 1,500. Check your fixture's socket limit before going brighter.
what size is a g25 bulb
A G25 is a globe about 3-1/8 inches across — the number is the diameter in eighths of an inch. The GE bulbs here use a standard medium base.
