The best lighted makeup mirrors

Bathroom light is the reason foundation looks different in the car. A good makeup mirror fixes the light, not just the view.

The short answer

Why the light matters more than the mirror

Most bathrooms light the face from above, which throws shadows under the brows and chin, and many use bulbs that render skin tones poorly. Makeup applied under that light looks different everywhere else.

A lighted makeup mirror solves both problems at once: the light comes from in front, at face height, and a good one is chosen for color accuracy rather than raw brightness.

CRI is the number to buy on

Color rendering index measures how accurately a light shows colors against a reference, out of 100. For makeup it is the single most important specification — it decides whether a foundation shade you match at the mirror still matches outside.

simplehuman publishes 95 on the Trio Max and wall mirror and 95+ on the Fold. For comparison, the ceiling fan-lights we cover publish 90. Many makeup mirrors publish no CRI at all, which is itself worth noticing. How simplehuman and Zadro publish different numbers is covered here.

Lux, not lumens

simplehuman publishes brightness in lux — light arriving at the face. Lumens, which other makers publish, is light leaving the source. Lux is the more useful number for a mirror because it tells you what you actually see.

More is not always better. The Trio Max’s 100 to 800 lux range matters for its bottom end as much as its top — a mirror you cannot dim is uncomfortable first thing in the morning.

Which magnification, briefly

1x for your whole face and for checking the overall effect. 5x for blending, concealer and general detail. 10x for brows, liner and lashes.

The trap is buying only a high magnification. At 10x you see a small patch of face and lose the overall picture, which is how people over-apply. Magnification by task is covered in full here.

Countertop mirrors are fully renter-safe

The Trio Max and the Fold rate Safe on our install rating: they sit on the counter, and the Fold runs on its own battery. The wall mirror is Owner-only, which is the reason it is the skip.

If counter space is the constraint, the Fold’s small footprint helps, and for a wider look at lit mirrors including wall-hung options, the LED mirror page is here.

simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio Max

1. Best overall

Sensor Mirror Trio Max

simplehuman · ST3050 · best for a daily makeup station at home

1x, 5x and 10x in one mirror, 95 CRI, 100 to 800 lux, and published sunlight and candlelight modes.

The simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio Max is the pick because it covers every magnification makeup actually needs, under light simplehuman specifies properly.

It publishes “1x, 5x, 10x”: 1x for the whole face, 5x for blending, 10x for brows and liner. Most mirrors make you choose one.

The light is the important part. simplehuman publishes “95 CRI” and “100–800 Lux” with touch-control adjustment. Color rendering is what makes foundation match in daylight, and 95 is the highest figure any maker on this site publishes.

It also publishes a mode to “Preview your look in full sunlight or authentic candlelight” — a genuinely useful feature for checking how makeup reads outdoors versus at dinner. It comes as a 10 in. plug-in with automatic flip or an 8 in. rechargeable, both on a five-year warranty.

simplehuman Sensor Mirror Fold

2. Best for travel

Sensor Mirror Fold

simplehuman · ST3079 · best for getting ready away from home

Folds into a case, runs four weeks on a USB-C charge, and keeps the 95+ CRI light and 5x and 10x magnification.

The simplehuman Sensor Mirror Fold is the one to pack.

simplehuman publishes 5.8 in. W x 4.6 in. D x 11.8 in. H, a flat fold with a travel case, and “1 Charge Lasts 4 Weeks” on USB-C — long enough for any trip without packing a charger.

It keeps the light: 95+ CRI, 600 lux in normal mode and 800 in high. Hotel bathroom lighting is reliably worse than home, which is exactly when a mirror that brings its own accurate light earns its place.

It publishes 5x and 10x magnification, a motion sensor that works 4 to 6 inches in front, four finishes and a five-year warranty.

simplehuman Wall Mount Sensor Mirror

The one to skip

Wall Mount Sensor Mirror

simplehuman · ST3003 · best for owners already rewiring the bathroom

The same 95 CRI light on a swing arm — hardwired at 100-240 V, which makes it a renovation, not a purchase.

The skip is about installation, not quality.

The Wall Mount Sensor Mirror publishes the same headline light as the others: 95 CRI, 600 lux, 5x magnification, on a “Stainless-steel telescopic swing arm” with a five-year warranty. Freeing the counter is a real advantage.

But simplehuman publishes the power as “Hard-Wired (100-240V)”. That means an electrician, a junction box behind the mirror position and a wall fixing — and in a rental, none of it is available to you.

It also publishes no mirror diameter and no arm reach, the two numbers that decide whether a wall mirror suits the spot. If you are renovating anyway, it is worth a look. Otherwise, the countertop models give you the same light for nothing but an outlet.
