The best magnifying mirrors

The higher the magnification, the closer your face gets, and the more of the room light your own head blocks. Which is why the number to check second is lux.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio, 8 inch

The short answer

5x for general grooming, 10x only if it is lit. simplehuman publishes “100-800 Lux” at “95 CRI” on a 5x round mirror, and a Trio at “1x, 5x, 10x”. At 10x your face is inches away and blocks the room light entirely.

Why magnification and light are one decision

This is the thing that is not obvious until you own a magnifying mirror, and it explains why so many of them end up in a drawer.

Magnification works by shortening the distance at which you can focus on detail. At 1x you stand at arm’s length. At 5x you are perhaps a foot away. At 10x your face is a few inches from the glass.

Now consider where the light in a bathroom comes from: above and behind you. The closer you get to the mirror, the more completely your own head blocks that light from reaching your face.

So an unlit 10x mirror is often worse than a plain one. You have magnified the detail and eliminated the light you needed to see it. Which is why every mirror on this page is lit, and why the lux figure matters as much as the magnification.

Which magnification, by task

1x. Not magnification at all, and necessary. Anything involving the whole face — foundation, checking a shave, seeing what you look like — needs to be done at 1x, because at higher magnification you cannot see the shape of your own face.

3x to 5x. The everyday range. Enough for eyeliner, eyebrows, a close shave and contact lenses, while still showing enough of the face for context. If you buy one magnification, buy this one.

10x. Genuinely close detail: tweezing, ingrown hairs, splinters. Powerful and disorienting, with a very shallow depth of field — move an inch and it goes out of focus. Only worth having lit.

15x and above. Beyond the useful range for most people. The working distance becomes so short that lighting and focus are both impractical.

The specifications that decide this, in order

Lux, and whether it varies. simplehuman publishes “100-800 Lux” — a range, not a single figure. A mirror you can dim to 100 at night and run at 800 in the morning is a considerably better product than one fixed at either.

CRI. Color Rendering Index, measuring how honestly a light source shows color against daylight. 95 CRI is very high and is the figure simplehuman publishes. Zadro publishes no CRI at all, which is a real gap if the mirror is for makeup.

Color temperature. Zadro publishes 6400K, a cool daylight white. simplehuman publishes no temperature at all for either model, which is an odd omission next to a 95 CRI claim.

Mounting. Countertop, cordless or wall-mounted, and in a rental this is the specification that decides what you can actually buy.

The 95 CRI question, and why it is the interesting number

CRI is worth understanding because it is the specification that separates a lit mirror from a light with a mirror attached.

A low-CRI source produces light with gaps in its spectrum. Colors that depend on the missing wavelengths look wrong — typically flat, or shifted. That is why makeup applied under cheap bathroom lighting can look completely different outdoors.

95 CRI means the light source renders color nearly as faithfully as daylight. simplehuman publishes it for both Sensor Mirrors, alongside “surgical-grade LEDs” and “Patterned micro-reflectors”.

If the mirror is for makeup, CRI matters more than lux and considerably more than magnification. If it is for tweezing and shaving, lux matters more. The wider lighted mirror comparison is here.

Counter space is the real constraint

Both simplehuman mirrors are published as countertop units that tilt back rather than wall-mounted. In a bathroom whose entire counter is six inches of ceramic beside the basin, that is a genuine cost.

The alternatives each have a catch. A wall-mounted arm needs anchors, which is the skip on this page for renters. A cordless mirror still stands on something, but at least it can be put away between uses.

If counter space is the binding constraint and you cannot drill, the cordless Zadro is the answer — it lives in a drawer and comes out when needed. The small-bathroom storage guide covers the wider problem.

Renter status, plainly

Three of the four products here rate Safe on our install rating: they stand on a surface and either plug in or take batteries. Nothing is fitted and nothing is undone.

The wall-mounted model is Owner-only, and it is the skip for that reason alone. Its optics are not the problem; four anchors in somebody else’s tile is.

A lit magnifying mirror is one of the cheapest genuine improvements available in a rented bathroom, precisely because the good options need nothing from the room at all.

Every pick in full

3 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

simplehuman simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio, 8 inch

1. Best overall

simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio, 8 inch

simplehuman · Sensor Mirror Trio · best for wanting 10x without giving up a usable everyday mirror

1x, 5x and 10x in one head, at a published 100-800 lux and 95 CRI — the highest color accuracy figure any maker here publishes.

The simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio is the pick because it removes the choice. simplehuman publishes “1x, 5x, 10x” in one head.

That matters because the right magnification is task-dependent, not preference-dependent. 1x for anything involving your whole face, 5x for most grooming, 10x for tweezing and detail work at very close range.

The light is what makes 10x usable at all: simplehuman publishes “100-800 Lux” and “95 CRI”, with “Tru-Lux Technology” using “Patterned micro-reflectors” and “surgical-grade LEDs”.

95 CRI is the highest color accuracy figure published by any maker in this catalog, and it is the specification that decides whether makeup applied at the mirror still looks right in daylight.

2. Best single magnification

simplehuman Sensor Mirror Round, 8 inch

simplehuman · Sensor Mirror Round · best for everyday grooming at the magnification most people actually use

5x at the same published 100-800 lux and 95 CRI, with a published 5-year warranty.

The Sensor Mirror Round publishes “5x” magnification with the same “100-800 Lux” and “95 CRI”, and a “5 Year” warranty.

Five times is the magnification most people reach for most of the time. It is close enough to see what you are doing and far enough that you can still see the shape of your face, which is what 10x takes away.

The variable brightness range is worth more than the top figure. Being able to run at 100 lux at night and 800 in the morning is a genuinely different product from a mirror with one setting.

Zadro Zadro Cordless LED Makeup Mirror (LEDMV410)

3. Best without an outlet

Zadro Cordless LED Makeup Mirror (LEDMV410)

Zadro · LEDMV410 · best for a bathroom with no socket near the basin

10x and 1x on a 360-degree swivel head, running on four AA batteries with a 6400K ring light.

The Zadro LEDMV410 solves the constraint that rules out most lit mirrors in older bathrooms: it needs no outlet at all.

Zadro publishes it as “Cordless battery operated with 4 AA Batteries”, with a 6400K ring light at 200+ lumens on a 360-degree swivel head, offering 10x on one face and 1x on the other. Batteries are honestly noted as “not included”.

The 10x-and-1x pairing is the classic dual-sided arrangement and it works well: flip for detail, flip back for the whole face.

The specification gap is real, though. Zadro publishes no CRI figure at all, and 6400K is a cool white with no adjustment.

Zadro Zadro Lexington Wall-Mounted Lighted Mirror (SLWRLT410H)

The one to skip

Zadro Lexington Wall-Mounted Lighted Mirror (SLWRLT410H)

Zadro · SLWRLT410H · best for a home you own, where the wall is yours to drill

A wall-mounted lighted mirror on an extending arm — excellent positioning, and anchors in a wall you may not own.

This is the skip on installability rather than optics, which is the axis this whole site is organized around.

A wall-mounted mirror on an extending arm is genuinely the best position for a magnifying mirror: it swings out to your face and folds away flat, and it uses no counter space at all.

But it mounts with anchors into tile or plasterboard, which is why it rates Owner-only on our install rating. In a rented bathroom that is a permission conversation and four holes to make good.

If you own the place, it is a fine product and the arm is a real advantage. If you are renting, a countertop or cordless mirror gets you the same optics with none of the holes.

Renter verdict: Owner-onlyThis one drills, or wires in, or both. Not a rental job.

Questions people actually ask

is 5x or 10x magnification better for a mirror

5x for everyday grooming — close enough for detail and far enough to see the shape of your face. 10x is for tweezing and very close work, has a shallow depth of field, and is only usable if the mirror is lit, because at that distance your head blocks the room light.

why do magnifying mirrors need lights

Because magnification brings your face close to the glass, and the closer you get the more completely your own head blocks the light coming from above and behind you. An unlit 10x mirror is often worse than a plain one.

what cri should a makeup mirror have

As high as published. simplehuman publishes 95 CRI on its Sensor Mirrors, which is the highest figure any maker in this catalog states. A low-CRI light has gaps in its spectrum, which is why makeup applied under it can look wrong in daylight.

The lighted mirror picks

are magnifying mirrors renter friendly

The countertop and cordless ones are — they stand on a surface and either plug in or take batteries, with nothing fitted. Wall-mounted mirrors on extending arms need anchors, which makes them Owner-only and a permission conversation.
