How to light a bathroom without rewiring
Every article about bathroom lighting assumes you can hire an electrician and open a wall. Here is what to do when you cannot.

The short answer

Why bathroom lighting is so consistently bad
It is not bad luck and it is not cost-cutting exactly. It is a design default that has been repeated for decades.
One fixture, mounted in the middle of the ceiling, behind where you stand at the basin. Light travels down onto the top of your head, and your head casts a shadow over your own face. Add a mirror flat against the wall and you are looking at a silhouette.
The professional fix is vanity lighting: fixtures either side of the mirror at face height, throwing light forward. It works, and it requires an electrician, a wall opening and, in a rental, somebody else’s permission. The head-to-head comparison is here.
The four options that need no wiring
1. A lit mirror. The highest-value change, because it is the only one that puts light where vanity fixtures would. It is a light source at face height pointing back at you, and that is the whole problem solved.
2. A better bulb. Nearly free, and genuinely underrated. Bathroom fixtures are routinely fitted with whatever was cheapest. A higher-output LED at a color temperature you actually like changes the room, and the old bulb goes back in when you leave.
3. A plug-in light. A lamp on a shelf or a windowsill, well away from water, fills the shadows a single ceiling fixture leaves. It does not fix the direction problem at the mirror, but it makes the room less gloomy.
4. Rechargeable or battery fittings. For bathrooms with no outlet, this is the only route. Zadro publishes a mirror on four AA batteries; the same principle applies to stick-on puck lights, at much lower output and with no CRI figure to judge them by.
Check the outlet before you shop
This decides everything, and takes a minute.
If there is an outlet near the basin: the whole plug-in category is open, and you can have 800 lux at 95 CRI without thinking about batteries.
If there is no outlet: you are in cordless territory, which means lower output, no published CRI on the models we could source, and batteries to replace.
Do not bridge the gap with an extension lead. A bathroom outlet should be GFCI protected, and a domestic lead run across a wet floor defeats that and adds a trip hazard in the room where falls are most common.
An outlet near the toilet or basin is also one of the more reasonable things to ask a landlord for, because it is a permanent improvement to the property. How to make that case is here.
Color temperature and CRI, briefly
Two numbers worth knowing before you buy a bulb or a mirror.
Color temperature in kelvin describes how warm or cool the light looks. 2700–3000K is warm and yellowish; 4000K is neutral; 5000–6500K is cool daylight white. Zadro publishes 6400K, which is at the cool end. Neither simplehuman mirror publishes a temperature at all.
CRI describes how honestly the light renders color. simplehuman publishes 95 CRI, which is very high. Zadro publishes none.
For a bathroom mirror, a neutral-to-cool temperature with high CRI is what you want: cool enough to see clearly, accurate enough that makeup and skin tone look the same outdoors. The full lighted mirror comparison works through both.
What none of this fixes
Being honest about the ceiling of these options.
A genuinely dark room. A lit mirror lights your face, not the room. If the bathroom is dim everywhere, a better ceiling bulb and a plug-in light help, and neither matches proper fixtures.
A broken or flickering fixture. Not a lighting upgrade — a maintenance fault, and a landlord’s repair. Report it rather than working around it.
No natural light at all. An internal bathroom with no window will always feel artificial. High-CRI light gets you closer than anything else, which is the strongest argument for the 95 CRI figure.
All of it leaves with you
Every product here rates Safe on our install rating. Countertop mirrors stand on a surface, cordless mirrors need nothing at all, and a bulb swap is reversed by putting the old bulb back.
Not one of these options touches the wiring, the wall or the ceiling, which is the point. The wider no-tools list is here.

3 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. Best overall
simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio, 8 inch
simplehuman · Sensor Mirror Trio · best for fixing the direction of the light, properly
100-800 lux at 95 CRI with 1x, 5x and 10x — light from the front, on a countertop, with nothing fitted.
The Sensor Mirror Trio is the pick because it attacks the actual problem: the light is in the wrong place, and this puts light in the right one.
simplehuman publishes “100-800 Lux”, “95 CRI”, “1x, 5x, 10x” magnification, and “Tru-Lux Technology” with “Patterned micro-reflectors” and “surgical-grade LEDs”.
The variable range is what makes it live-with-able. 800 lux at seven in the morning, 100 at night, from the same object.
It stands on the counter and tilts back. Nothing is fitted, nothing is drilled, and it comes with you.

Why: Rechargeable and countertop. There is nothing to fit and nothing to make good, which is the whole reason a mirror like this suits a rental.

What’s wrong with it
It needs an outlet, and it permanently occupies part of a counter that may be tiny.
What we can’t tell you
simplehuman publishes no color temperature range, only the CRI.

2. Best with no outlet
Zadro Cordless LED Makeup Mirror (LEDMV410)
Zadro · LEDMV410 · best for the bathroom that has no socket at all
Four AA batteries, a 6400K ring light at 200+ lumens, on a 360-degree swivel head with 10x and 1x.
A great many older bathrooms have no outlet whatsoever, and that single fact rules out most of this category.
The Zadro LEDMV410 is published as “Cordless battery operated with 4 AA Batteries”, with a 6400K ring light at 200+ lumens on a 360-degree swivel head, and 10x and 1x faces. Batteries are noted honestly as “not included”.
Being cordless has a second advantage in a small bathroom: it can live in a drawer or a cabinet and come out only when needed, so it costs no permanent counter space.
The 6400K is cool daylight white with no adjustment, and Zadro publishes no CRI figure, so if the mirror is for makeup that is a genuine unknown.

3. Best small option
simplehuman Sensor Mirror Round, 8 inch
simplehuman · Sensor Mirror Round · best for a smaller counter, at the magnification most people use
8 inch, 5x, the same 100-800 lux and 95 CRI, with a published 5-year warranty.
The Sensor Mirror Round is the same light in a smaller object: “5x”, “100-800 Lux”, “95 CRI”, and a “5 Year” warranty.
For lighting purposes the magnification barely matters — you are buying the light source and the mirror comes with it. What matters is that the light is at face height, pointing at you, and adjustable.
simplehuman publishes it as countertop, tilting back rather than wall-mounted, which is precisely what makes it available to a renter.

Questions people actually ask
how can i improve bathroom lighting without an electrician
Add light at your face rather than fixing the ceiling. A lit mirror puts a light source at face height pointing back at you, which is what vanity fixtures do and what a ceiling fixture cannot. Swapping the existing bulb for a better LED is the free half of the answer.
why is my face in shadow in the bathroom mirror
Because the light is above and behind you, so your own head blocks it. That is a direction problem, not a brightness one — a brighter bulb in the same place gives you a harder-edged shadow rather than removing it.
can you get a lighted mirror without an outlet
Yes. Zadro publishes a cordless model running on four AA batteries with a 6400K ring light. Output is lower than a plug-in mirror and no CRI figure is published, but it needs nothing from the room at all.
can i change a bathroom light fixture in a rental
Changing a bulb, yes. Changing the fixture, the switch or any wiring, no — bathroom wiring needs GFCI protection, it is the one category of DIY that can genuinely hurt someone, and it is a lease breach. A broken fixture is a maintenance request.
