The best vanity lighting for a windowless bathroom
An interior bathroom has no daylight to fall back on and nothing to correct a bad bulb. Every decision here is doing more work than it would by a window.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
What to look for, in order
- Light from the sides, then above. A single fixture over the mirror casts shadows down the face — under the eyes, the nose and the chin. A pair of sconces at roughly eye level fills them. If you can only have one fitting, a wide bar with diffusing shades is the next best thing.
- CRI 90 or better. With no daylight, nothing corrects a bulb that renders color badly. Both 60-watt-replacement globes here publish 90; the sensor mirror publishes 95.
- Total lumens, counted honestly. Add up what the fixtures actually deliver rather than what the fitting looks like it should. A three-light bar with 250-lumen bulbs is dimmer than a two-light sconce with 500-lumen ones.
- A damp rating. Both Kohler fixtures publish “Suitable for damp locations, per UL 1598”. In a windowless bathroom, moisture leaves more slowly, so this is not a formality. Ventilation is the other half of that problem.
- The socket. E26 medium takes G25 globes; E12 candelabra takes B10 or T10. Buying the wrong base is the commonest mistake in this category.
Why a windowless bathroom is a harder lighting problem
A room with a window gets a free, perfectly color-rendered light source for most of the day, and your eyes use it as a reference. Take it away and three things change: color judgments at the mirror depend entirely on the bulb, the room feels smaller because there is no bright surface at its edge, and there is no cue that the extractor has cleared the air.
The first is solved with CRI, the second with light on the walls rather than only on the floor, and the third is not a lighting problem at all. Fan against window is compared here.
Layer it: three jobs, not one
Task light at the mirror, from the sides where possible. Ambient light so the room is not lit only at the vanity — usually the existing ceiling fitting, which is fine for this job and bad for the other two. A night option, because an interior bathroom at 3 a.m. is genuinely dark. The night lights are ranked here.
Where sconces go, and how much wall they need
Side lighting only works if the fittings are roughly at face height and far enough apart to clear the mirror. The published dimensions tell you whether your wall can take it: the Memoirs sconce is 15-1/8 in. wide and stands 7-3/16 in. from the wall on a 5 in. square backplate, so a pair either side of a mirror needs about 30 in. of wall plus the mirror between them.
Projection is the number that catches people out in a small room. Seven inches of fitting sticking out beside a basin is fine on a wide wall and an obstacle in a 3 ft alcove. The bar is the alternative there: the Simplice publishes 5-9/16 in. of projection and puts all its width above the mirror instead of beside it. Sizing a fixture to a mirror is here.
Adding up the lumens before you buy
Fixtures do not publish output; bulbs do. That means the only honest way to know what a fitting will deliver is to multiply the sockets by the bulb you intend to put in them.
Two sockets with 500-lumen globes is 1,000 lumens at face height. The same fitting with the 250-lumen decorative bulbs is 500. A three-light bar with 500-lumen candelabra bulbs is 1,500 if the sockets take them — and on the Simplice they do not, because it publishes E12 candelabra with “type B10 or T10 bulbs recommended”.
The Memoirs sconce publishes a socket rating of “60 Hz, 60 W, 1600 Lumens”, which is a ceiling rather than an output: it is the most bulb the fitting will take, not what it gives you.
Damp rating, and why it matters more here
Both Kohler fittings publish “Suitable for damp locations, per UL 1598”. In a bathroom with a window, moisture leaves on its own; in one without, it leaves through the extractor or not at all, and fittings spend longer in humid air.
Neither GE bulb publishes a damp rating, which is normal for a bulb and worth knowing if you are putting one in an enclosed shade. If ventilation is the underlying problem, no light fixes it. Sensing fans against timers is compared here.
If you cannot rewire
Plenty of windowless bathrooms have exactly one ceiling box and a tenancy agreement. The bulb and the sensor mirror are the two picks here that need no electrician and no permission: better color rendering overhead, and a properly lit face at the basin. The renter-safe mirror upgrades are here.
Switches, and the order they get pressed in
In a windowless bathroom the first switch someone finds at night is the one that matters. If the ceiling light and the vanity lights are on separate switches, put the softer one nearest the door — nobody wants 1,000 lumens at face height at three in the morning.
One more reason to fix the light here first
In a room with no window, the light is also the only thing telling you the room is clean. Grout, limescale on the glass and marks on a mirror all disappear under a single dim ceiling fitting and all show up under 1,000 lumens at CRI 90. That is either an argument for better light or an argument against it, depending on the week.
What we would not do
Fit one very bright ceiling light and call it done. More lumens from directly above deepens the shadows rather than removing them.
Buy a fixture without checking its damp rating. In a room with no window, humidity lingers.
Mix color temperatures in one fitting. It looks like a fault, and in a windowless room there is no daylight to disguise it. Soft white against daylight is here.
Every pick in full
4 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. Best light on your face
Memoirs Two-Light Sconce
Kohler · K-23687-BA02 · best for mounting either side of the mirror
A two-light frosted sconce rated 60 W and 1600 lumens per socket, damp rated, dimmable with the right switch.
Kohler’s Memoirs sconce publishes two E26 medium sockets rated “60 Hz, 60 W, 1600 Lumens”, with “Frosted glass shades perfectly diffuse the light, reducing glare” and a published damp rating: “Suitable for damp locations, per UL 1598”.
It measures 15-1/8 in. wide by 9-3/8 in. tall and stands 7-3/16 in. from the wall on a 5 in. square backplate, and it is “Dimmable when paired with dimmer switch and compatible bulbs”. Kohler notes it “works best with type G light bulbs” — the G25 globes below fit it.

What’s wrong with it
Hardwired, and a pair means two boxes in the wall — this is an owner-only, electrician-shaped job.
What we can’t tell you
Kohler publishes no fixing detail on the sheet, and the warranty terms live on its website rather than the spec.

2. Best single fixture
Simplice Three-Light Vanity Fixture
Kohler · K-26848-SC03 · best for one box above the mirror, done properly
A 22-5/8 in. three-light bar with painted glass shades that diffuse glare, damp rated, on one circuit.
Where there is one existing box above the mirror, Kohler’s Simplice bar spreads the light across three shades instead of one: “Painted glass shades perfectly diffuse the light, reducing glare”, 22-5/8 in. wide, 9-11/16 in. tall, 5-9/16 in. from the wall, 120 V at 1.5 A on one circuit, and “Suitable for damp locations, per UL 1598”.
Width matters here: a bar roughly as wide as the mirror throws light across the whole face rather than down the middle of it. The sizing rule is here.

3. Best bulb for a room with no daylight
GE Refresh HD LED G25 Vanity Globe Bulbs, 60-Watt Replacement, Daylight (2 Pack)
GE Lighting · Refresh HD G25, 60 W replacement · best for color you can trust at the mirror
5000K, 500 lumens, CRI 90, 5.5 W and dimmable — the daylight reference the room does not have.
In a windowless bathroom the bulb is the only light source there is, so color rendering stops being a nicety. GE’s Refresh HD publishes CRI 90 at 5000K, “500lm”, 5.5 W as a 60-watt replacement, and “Yes with Dimmer Switch”.
If you would rather the room felt warm than accurate, its 2700K sibling is identical on every other number. The two are compared here.

4. Best fix without rewiring
simplehuman Sensor Mirror Round, 8 inch
simplehuman · Sensor Mirror Round · best for a rental, or a bathroom with only a ceiling light
A rechargeable 5x mirror publishing 100-800 lux at 95 CRI, five weeks a charge, 5-year warranty.
simplehuman’s round sensor mirror publishes “100-800 Lux” of light at “95 CRI” — higher color accuracy than either bulb here — with a “Built-In Lithium Ion Battery” where “1 Charge Lasts 5 Weeks”, 5x magnification on an 8 in. face, and a “5 Year” warranty.
It does not light the room, and it is not meant to. It lights the one task that a bad ceiling fixture ruins, and it needs no wiring, no fixings and no permission. The other no-rewire routes are here.

The one to skip
GE Classic LED G25 Vanity Globe Bulbs, 25-Watt Replacement, Soft White (2 Pack)
GE Lighting · Classic LED G25, 25 W replacement · best for a decorative fitting somewhere with daylight
250 lumens at CRI 80 is half the light and lower color accuracy, in the room that can least afford either.
GE publishes this one at 3.5 W as a 25-watt replacement, “250lm”, 2700K, CRI 80, dimmable, and “Rated to last 13.7 years” at three hours a day. In a room with a window it is a perfectly reasonable decorative bulb.
In a windowless bathroom it is the wrong specification twice over: half the lumens of the 60-watt-replacement globes, and ten points lower on color rendering with no daylight to make up the difference. If a fixture takes several bulbs the lumen gap compounds.

Questions people actually ask
how do you light a bathroom with no windows
Put task light at the mirror — from the sides if you can — keep the ceiling fitting for ambient light, and use CRI 90 or better bulbs, because with no daylight the bulb is the only color reference in the room.
what color light is best for a windowless bathroom
5000K daylight at the mirror gives the closest reference to the light you will be seen in outside. Warmer 2700K suits the rest of the room if you want it to feel continuous with the house.
how many lumens for a bathroom with no window
Count what the fixtures actually deliver rather than guessing from the fitting: a pair of 500-lumen globes in a two-light sconce is 1,000 lumens at the face, where a 250-lumen decorative bulb is a quarter of that per socket.
can you improve windowless bathroom lighting without rewiring
Yes. A higher-CRI bulb in the existing fixture and a rechargeable lighted mirror at the basin cover the two jobs that matter, with no electrician and nothing fixed to the wall.
