Renter-friendly bathroom mirror upgrades

The mirror on the wall is the landlord's. Everything you put in front of it is yours, and the good options need neither an outlet nor a drill.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A lighted makeup mirror on a bathroom counter

The short answer

Add a mirror rather than replacing one. A rechargeable lighted mirror like simplehuman’s Sensor Mirror Trio publishes 95 CRI and five weeks per charge; Zadro’s battery mirror needs no outlet at all; and a silicone-grip shower mirror fixes the fogging problem. None of the three touches the wall.

A bathroom you own, or a landlord who says yesOwner-only

What you can and cannot change

The mirror fixed over the basin is part of the property. Taking it down means holes, adhesive residue or both, and in most tenancies that is the landlord’s decision. What you can change in a rental bathroom is covered in full here.

So the upgrade is additive: put a better mirror in front of the one you have, and choose one that needs neither a fixing nor an outlet.

Battery or rechargeable, and why it matters

The single most useful specification in this category is how the mirror is powered. Zadro’s cordless model runs on four AA batteries; simplehuman’s rechargeable mirrors publish five weeks per charge on the Trio and the Round, and four weeks on the folding model.

That matters because the bathrooms that need extra light are usually the ones with no socket near the basin. Neither a battery nor a USB-C charge asks anything of the room.

Light quality, in the numbers makers publish

  • simplehuman: “95 CRI” and “100-800 Lux”.
  • Zadro cordless: 200+ lumens at 6400K.
  • Zadro Lexington: 200+ lumens, 4600K to 6500K, three color settings.

The two brands publish different units, so their light cannot be compared directly — a point we make on the simplehuman against Zadro page. For color accuracy, CRI is the number to look for.

What about framing the builder’s mirror?

Stick-on frame kits are widely sold, and we found no manufacturer publishing an adhesive rating, a removal method or a weight for one. Until somebody does, we cannot tell you whether a frame comes off a rental mirror cleanly, so we are not ranking any.

What we can point at is the adhesive that does publish its numbers: 3M rates its Command water-resistant strips at 3 lb and 5 lb and publishes a stretch-release removal. Removing adhesive fittings cleanly is its own small skill.

The lighting behind the mirror

If the problem is the room rather than the mirror, the bulb in the existing fixture is the other renter-safe change: vanity bulbs are ranked on published CRI here, and lighting a bathroom without rewiring is covered here.

What needs permission

Anything that fixes to the wall or plugs into wiring: Zadro’s Lexington arm, simplehuman’s hardwired Wall Mount Sensor Mirror at 100-240 V, and every lighted mirror or lighted cabinet in our mirror against cabinet comparison. All rate Owner-only on our install rating.

Questions people actually ask

can you get a lighted bathroom mirror without wiring

Yes. simplehuman publishes rechargeable sensor mirrors at 95 CRI with one charge lasting five weeks, and Zadro sells a cordless model that runs on four AA batteries. Both are countertop mirrors rather than wall mirrors.

how can renters upgrade a bathroom mirror

Add rather than replace: a rechargeable or battery lighted mirror on the counter, or a silicone-grip shower mirror inside the shower. Both leave the landlord's mirror and walls untouched.

are stick-on mirror frame kits safe for rentals

We could not find a maker publishing an adhesive rating or a removal method for one, so we do not rank them. Where adhesive is published — 3M rates its water-resistant strips at 3 and 5 lb — the removal method is published too.

what mirror upgrades need the landlord's permission

Anything fixed to the wall or wired in: Zadro's wall-mounted Lexington arm, simplehuman's hardwired wall mirror, and lighted mirrors or lighted medicine cabinets, which need a circuit and usually a dimmer.
