Lighted mirror vs lighted medicine cabinet
Same wall, same circuit, same job at the front. The difference is what happens behind the glass.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
They light a face the same way
Both formats put light at the sides of your face rather than above it, which is the whole reason either exists. A mirror does it with a diffuser or a band on the glass; a cabinet does it with light guides down the frame, or with panels you can aim.
On published light, the cabinet wins on paper: 2,200 lumens for the Verdera against an estimated 2,170 for the Robern — and Robern footnotes that figure as measured on a bigger mirror. Both publish CRI 90 or better.
Depth is the thing you will notice
- Robern Vitality mirror: 1-3/4 in. (45 mm) deep.
- Kohler Verdera lighted mirror: 2 in. (51 mm) deep.
- Kohler Maxstow lighted cabinet: 3-7/8 in. deep.
Two extra inches does not sound like much until the cabinet is above a shallow vanity and you lean in to shave. Recessing a cabinet solves it, and recessed against surface-mount is compared here.
Only the mirror has a defogger
This is the split nobody expects. Robern publishes “Mirror defogging” on its Vitality mirrors; neither Kohler cabinet here publishes a defogger, and neither does Kohler’s own lighted mirror. If a clear mirror straight out of the shower is the point, the anti-fog mirrors are here.
Only the cabinet has outlets and shelves
Kohler puts two outlets inside the Verdera and one inside the Maxstow, which is where a toothbrush and a razor charger should live in a bathroom with no socket by the basin. You also get shelves: adjustable glass in the Verdera, fixed in the Maxstow.
The wiring is different work
The Robern mirror plugs in — into an outlet its drawing places behind the glass. The Kohler products want more: the cabinets need “One circuit required, protected with Class A Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI)”, the Verdera cabinet and the Kohler mirror both require a dimmer switch, and Kohler recommends a professional electrician for both. Budget for an electrician either way.
Which to fit
A lighted mirror if you already have storage, the wall is shallow, and fog annoys you. A lighted cabinet if the bathroom is short of storage or has no outlet near the basin — the cupboard and the sockets are worth more day to day than a defogger.

Questions people actually ask
is a lighted mirror or a lighted medicine cabinet better
A lighted mirror is slimmer — Robern publishes 1-3/4 inches of depth — and can include a defogger. A lighted medicine cabinet adds shelves and internal outlets and publishes more light: 2,200 lumens for Kohler's Verdera.
do lighted medicine cabinets have defoggers
Neither Kohler lighted cabinet we cover publishes one. Robern publishes 'Mirror defogging' on its Vitality lighted mirrors.
how deep is a lighted medicine cabinet
Kohler's lighted Maxstow is 3-7/8 inches deep surface-mounted. For comparison, Robern's Vitality lighted mirror is 1-3/4 inches and Kohler's lighted mirror is 2 inches.
do lighted mirrors need an electrician
Usually. Robern's mirrors are plug-in but expect an outlet behind the glass; Kohler's lighted mirror and cabinets require a GFCI-protected circuit and a dimmer, and Kohler recommends professional electrician installation.
