What size vanity light do you need?
Fixture widths are published to the sixteenth of an inch. Mirror widths are too. Sizing a vanity light is arithmetic, not taste.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks

Work from the mirror, then the wall
The fixture exists to light a face in a mirror, so the mirror sets the target. Published mirror widths in our catalog cluster around 20, 24 and 30 in.: Kohler’s Verdera medicine cabinet is 20 in. wide by 40 in. tall, its Verdera lighted mirror is 24 x 33 in., and Robern’s Vitality mirrors come at 24 x 30 and 24 x 40 in.
Against those, the fixtures are 15-1/8, 22-5/8 and 24-1/4 in. wide. A three-light bar at 22-5/8 in. sits comfortably over a 24 in. mirror; a 15-1/8 in. sconce over a 30 in. mirror will light the middle of your face and leave the sides in shadow.
The four measurements to take
- Mirror width. The fixture should relate to this, not to the vanity top, because the mirror is what you look into.
- Gap above the mirror. Compare it with the fixture height: 9-3/8 in. for the Memoirs sconce, 9-11/16 in. for the Simplice bar, 16-3/8 in. for the Occasion.
- Projection. How far the fixture comes off the wall — published at 5-9/16, 6-1/2 and 7-3/16 in. for those three. In a narrow bathroom this is the number that decides whether you walk into it.
- Backplate. It has to cover the existing electrical box. Kohler publishes a 5 in. square backplate for the Memoirs sconce; not every maker publishes this, and it is worth asking before you order.
Two fixtures or one?
Sconces either side of a mirror light both sides of a face; a bar above it lights from one direction. Neither is a rule, and both are published products with published dimensions — but the side-by-side pair needs wall space either side of the mirror that a lot of bathrooms do not have. Bar against sconces is compared here.
Height, and the one published rule
There is no published height for a bathroom light fixture, but there is one for the mirror it lights, and it constrains everything above it. The ADA Standards state: “Mirrors located above lavatories or countertops shall be installed with the bottom edge of the reflecting surface 40 inches (1015 mm) maximum above the finish floor or ground.” Mirror height sets the top of the mirror, and the top of the mirror sets where the fixture can go.
Wattage and what the socket rating means
Kohler publishes socket ratings rather than fixture output: “60 Hz, 60 W, 1600 Lumens” per socket on the Memoirs sconce, and 120 V, 1.5 A for the three-light bars. That is a ceiling, not a promise — what you actually get depends on the bulbs you fit.
This is why bulb choice is not a detail. A three-socket fixture with CRI 80 bulbs and the same fixture with CRI 90 bulbs are different products at the mirror. The vanity lights are ranked here.
Damp rating is not optional
All three fixtures above publish “Suitable for damp locations, per UL 1598”. In a bathroom that line is the difference between a fixture designed for steam and one that is not, and it is published on the spec sheet rather than the box.
If you rent
Every hardwired fixture here rates Owner-only: changing one means the circuit and the electrical box. Renters wanting more light at the mirror have a different route entirely. Lighting a bathroom without rewiring is covered here.

3 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. For a narrow mirror
Memoirs Two-Light Sconce
Kohler · K-23687-BA02 · best for mirrors under about 24 in. wide
15-1/8 in. wide, two E26 sockets rated 60 W and 1600 lumens, on a 5 in. square backplate.
Kohler’s Memoirs two-light sconce publishes 15-1/8 in. wide by 9-3/8 in. tall, projecting 7-3/16 in. from the wall on a 5 in. square backplate, with a socket rating of “60 Hz, 60 W, 1600 Lumens”.
The projection is the number to watch on a narrow fixture: 7-3/16 in. is a lot of reach into a small room, and it is measured from the wall, not from the mirror face.

Why: A hardwired fixture on a junction box. Swapping one is electrical work, and a rental's wiring is the landlord's responsibility.

What’s wrong with it
Two sockets over a wide mirror leaves the outer edges of your face dimmer than the middle.
What we can’t tell you
Kohler publishes a socket rating rather than a delivered lumen figure for the fixture.

2. For a standard vanity
Simplice Three-Light Vanity Fixture
Kohler · K-26848-SC03 · best for a 24 to 30 in. mirror
22-5/8 in. of three-light bar, 5-9/16 in. from the wall, with frosted shades that diffuse glare.
The Simplice three-light bar publishes 22-5/8 in. wide, 9-11/16 in. tall and 5-9/16 in. from the wall — the shallowest projection of the fixtures we cover, which matters over a shallow vanity.
Its “Painted glass shades perfectly diffuse the light, reducing glare”, and it takes three candelabra (E12) bulbs, with “type B10 or T10 bulbs recommended”. Bulbs are sold separately, which means you choose the color rendering. Which bulbs to put in it is covered here.

Why: A hardwired fixture on a junction box above the mirror. Electrical work on wiring the tenant does not own.

What’s wrong with it
Candelabra sockets narrow the bulb choice compared with a standard medium base.
What we can’t tell you
Kohler does not publish a delivered lumen figure for the fixture as a whole.

3. For a wide mirror
Occasion Three-Light Vanity Fixture
Kohler · K-31778-SC03 · best for mirrors 30 in. and wider
24-1/4 in. wide with three medium-base sockets — the widest fixture we cover.
The Occasion three-light fixture publishes 24-1/4 in. wide, 16-3/8 in. tall and 6-1/2 in. from the wall, with three medium (E26) sockets and a “T10 bulb recommended”.
Note the height: 16-3/8 in. is tall for a bathroom fixture, and it has to fit between the top of the mirror and the ceiling. Measure that gap before the width.

Questions people actually ask
how wide should a vanity light be
Relate it to the mirror, not the room. The fixtures we cover publish widths of 15-1/8 in. for a two-light sconce, 22-5/8 in. for a three-light bar and 24-1/4 in. for the widest three-light, against mirrors of 20, 24 and 30 in.
how far should a vanity light stick out from the wall
Check the published projection against your room. Kohler publishes 5-9/16 in. for the Simplice bar, 6-1/2 in. for the Occasion and 7-3/16 in. for the Memoirs sconce, measured from the wall.
how high should a bathroom mirror be
The ADA Standards require mirrors above lavatories to have the bottom edge of the reflecting surface no more than 40 inches above the finish floor, and mirrors not above lavatories no more than 35 inches.
how many bulbs does a vanity light need
Enough to light the width of the mirror evenly. A two-light sconce suits mirrors under about 24 in.; a three-light bar spreads light across a 24 to 30 in. mirror. Kohler publishes socket ratings of 60 W and 1600 lumens per socket rather than a fixture output.
