Vanity light bar vs sconces

The same globe, the same finish, the same maker. Only the arrangement changes, and it changes more than you would think.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

Wall lights beside a bathroom mirror

The short answer

Sconces on each side light your face more evenly, which matters for shaving and makeup. A bar over the mirror is one junction box and one fixture, and it is the practical choice when that box is already there. Kohler’s Embra comes as both, which makes the comparison unusually clean.

Why the side light wins for faces

Light from above falls down the face and leaves shadows under the brows, nose and chin. Light from both sides meets in the middle and fills those shadows in. That is the whole reason lighted makeup mirrors and many lighted cabinets put their LEDs at the sides.

So for shaving and makeup, a pair of sconces does a better job than any bar — which is also why lighted cabinets with side-integrated LEDs are worth a look.

The wiring is the real difference

A bar mounts on one junction box above the mirror. Sconces need a box on each side. If your bathroom has one box above the mirror, switching to sconces means two new boxes and new cable in the wall — electrician’s work, and usually some patching and painting.

The electrical load is not the issue: two Embra sconces draw 0.666 A between them against 1 A for the Embra bar.

Space

Sconces need wall beside the mirror. A bar needs wall above it. In a bathroom where the mirror runs wall to wall, the bar may be the only option; where the mirror is narrow and the wall is wide, sconces come into their own. The slim Purist, at 4 in. deep and 2-11/16 in. across, is the easiest sconce to fit.

Glare, either way

Whichever you choose, the glass matters more than the arrangement. Clear shades at eye level show you the bulb; frosted ones spread the light. Every fixture on this page is damp-rated under UL 1598.

Which to choose

Sconces if you are remodeling, the wall beside the mirror is free, and you do detail work at the mirror. A bar if the junction box above the mirror is staying and you want the simplest swap. The bar picks are here.

1. The bar

Embra by Studio McGee Three-Light Vanity Fixture

Kohler · K-32254-SC03 · best for an existing box above the mirror

Three globes on one backplate, 24-11/16 in. wide, damp-rated, on one junction box.

The Kohler Embra three-light puts three 6-9/16 in. globes on a single bar, 24-11/16 in. wide and 7-13/16 in. from the wall. It needs one junction box above the mirror and draws 1 A at 120 V.

Its shade type is listed as clear glass, which is why it is our skip on the vanity bar page for glare. As a comparison, though, it is ideal: the same globe comes as a single sconce.

Kohler Embra by Studio McGee One-Light Sconce

2. The matching sconce

Embra by Studio McGee One-Light Sconce

Kohler · K-32252-SC01 · best for a pair either side of the mirror

The same globe as a single, dimmable sconce — fit one each side for even light.

The Kohler Embra one-light is the same 6-9/16 in. globe on its own backplate. A pair either side of the mirror replaces the bar, and the one-light sheet adds something the three-light sheet lacks: it is dimmable “when paired with dimmer switch and compatible bulbs”.

Each draws 0.333 A at 120 V, so two draw less than the three-light bar. Each needs its own junction box.

Kohler Purist One-Light Sconce

3. The low-glare sconce

Purist One-Light Sconce

Kohler · K-32375-SC01 · best for tight spaces either side of the mirror

A slim frosted-glass tube, 16-7/8 in. tall but only 4 in. from the wall.

The Kohler Purist one-light is the sconce to choose if glare worries you. It has a “Frosted-glass shade” 2-11/16 in. across and 16-7/8 in. tall, and projects just 4 in. from the wall — useful where the space beside the mirror is narrow.

It comes in nine finishes and takes a medium-base T-type LED bulb.

Kohler Simplice Three-Light Vanity Fixture

4. The low-glare bar

Simplice Three-Light Vanity Fixture

Kohler · K-26848-SC03 · best for keeping the bar, losing the glare

Frosted shades on a three-light bar, 5-9/16 in. from the wall.

If the box is above the mirror and staying there, the Kohler Simplice is the bar that lights best: frosted glass Kohler says “perfectly diffuse the light, reducing glare”, damp-rated, 22-5/8 in. wide.

Questions people actually ask

are sconces better than a vanity light bar

For lighting a face, yes: light from both sides fills the shadows an overhead bar leaves under the brows and chin. A bar is simpler, because it needs one junction box above the mirror instead of two beside it.

can i replace a vanity light bar with sconces

Yes, but each sconce needs its own junction box beside the mirror, so it means new wiring in the wall. That is a job for an electrician.

how far apart should vanity sconces be

The Kohler sheets we used give no spacing rule for a pair, and we will not invent one. Measure the mirror, allow for the fixture's width, and make sure each sconce has clear wall to mount on.

do bathroom sconces need to be damp rated

They should be. Every Kohler fixture on this page is rated suitable for damp locations under UL 1598.
