The best bathroom vanity lights
The light over the mirror is the one you look straight into. Glare, not brightness, is what most of them get wrong.

The short answer

Quick picks

Glare is the problem, not brightness
Most lighting advice is about how much light you need. At a mirror, the more common failure is how it reaches you. A vanity light sits roughly at eye level, so a bare, bright source is a point of glare you look into every morning.
That is why the shade matters more than the fixture’s shape. Kohler describes the Memoirs’ frosted shades as “reducing glare” and the Artifacts’ inner diffusers as “for reduced glare”. Diffused light spreads across your face instead of hitting your eyes.
Light from the sides beats light from above
A single light overhead casts shadows down the face, under the brows and chin. Sconces mounted either side of a mirror light the face evenly from both directions, which is why they are the professional choice for makeup and shaving. LED mirrors against vanity lights is covered here.
Direction is a fixture decision too. Kohler says the Orime “can be positioned up or down”, while the Artifacts is downlight only. Check before you plan a pair either side of the mirror.
The damp rating is not optional
All three fixtures here are “Suitable for damp locations, per UL 1598”. A bathroom vanity light should carry that rating. A fixture inside a shower or directly over a tub is a different rating and a different product — that is a question for your electrician, not a vanity-light page.
The socket rating sets your bulb ceiling
Every fixture has a maximum it will safely take. Kohler publishes 60 W and 1,600 lumens per socket for the Memoirs and 9 W and 900 lumens for the Orime; the Artifacts sheet does not give a socket wattage.
With LED bulbs, staying under the limit is easy. The GE globe bulbs on our vanity bulb page draw 5 to 5.5 watts for 500 lumens each. The number to care about on the bulb is color rendering, and that page explains why.
Dimming
Kohler says the Memoirs and Artifacts are dimmable when paired with a dimmer switch and compatible bulbs. Both halves matter: a dimmer rated for LED loads, and bulbs sold as dimmable. The Orime sheet makes no dimming statement.
If you rent
Every fixture here rates Owner-only on our install rating: it is hardwired to a junction box.
Two things you can change without an electrician: the bulbs in the fixture you already have, which is a genuine improvement, and a plug-in or battery lit mirror. Lighting a rental bathroom without rewiring is covered here.
Every pick in full
2 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. Best overall
Memoirs Two-Light Sconce
Kohler · K-23687-BA02 · best for even, low-glare light at the mirror
Frosted shades, a damp rating, dimmable with the right bulbs, and a generous 60 W, 1,600-lumen socket limit.
The Kohler Memoirs two-light sconce is the pick because Kohler designs it around the problem that matters at a mirror. The sheet says its “Frosted glass shades perfectly diffuse the light, reducing glare in the bathroom”.
It takes two medium (E26) bulbs and “works best with type G light bulbs (sold separately)”. The socket rating is “60 Hz, 60 W, 1600 Lumens”, which leaves plenty of room for a good LED globe — the bulbs we recommend draw 5 to 5.5 watts.
It is “Suitable for damp locations, per UL 1598”, dimmable “when paired with dimmer switch and compatible bulbs”, and measures 15-1/8 in. wide, 9-3/8 in. tall and 7-3/16 in. from the wall on a 5 in. square backplate.

Why: A hardwired fixture on a junction box. Swapping one is electrical work, and a rental's wiring is the landlord's responsibility.

What’s wrong with it
Bulbs are not included, and three finishes — Polished Nickel, Brushed Nickel and Polished Chrome — is a short list if you are matching black or brass.
What we can’t tell you
Kohler names its Indoor Lighting Fixtures Limited Warranty but does not print the terms on the sheet.

2. Best for matching finishes
Artifacts Two-Light Sconce
Kohler · K-72582 · best for traditional bathrooms and faucet-matched metal
Clear outer glass over frosted inner diffusers, a damp rating, and eight finishes that coordinate with Kohler's Artifacts faucets.
The Kohler Artifacts two-light sconce solves the glare problem a different way: “Clear glass shades with inner frosted glass diffusers for reduced glare”. You get the look of clear glass without staring into a bare bulb.
It comes in eight finishes, from Polished Nickel and Matte Black to Brushed Bronze and French Gold, designed to coordinate with the Artifacts faucet range. It needs medium-base bulbs, with a T10 bulb recommended, and it is damp-rated and dimmable with compatible bulbs.
It is larger than the Memoirs at 18 in. wide and 13-3/16 in. tall, and Kohler specifies it “For installation as a downlight only”.

What’s wrong with it
Downlight only, so the shades must hang below the arm; you cannot flip it to throw light upward.
What we can’t tell you
The sheet lists 'Number of Lights: 1' against two shades, and prints a faucet warranty name on a light fixture. We would confirm both with Kohler before buying.

The one to skip
Orime Three-Light Sconce
Kohler · K-REC34051-SC03 · best for rooms lit from elsewhere, where it is decoration
Clear glass and clear bulbs at eye level, with a 9 W socket limit — handsome, and the wrong kind of light for a mirror.
The Kohler Orime is a good-looking fixture being asked to do the wrong job.
It has a “Dome-shaped shade in clear glass” and ships with “three clear A19 LED bulbs included”. Clear over clear, mounted at face height, means looking straight at three bright points of light every time you look in the mirror — exactly what Kohler’s frosted shades on the other two are designed to prevent.
Its socket rating is also the lowest here, at “60 Hz, 9 W, 900 Lumens”, which caps how bright a replacement bulb can be. In a hallway or over a bath it could be lovely. Over a mirror, choose diffused light.

Questions people actually ask
what is the best light for a bathroom vanity
Diffused light from the sides of the mirror. Frosted or diffused shades, like the ones Kohler describes on its Memoirs and Artifacts sconces, cut the glare you get from looking at a bare bulb at eye level.
do bathroom vanity lights need to be damp rated
They should be. All three Kohler fixtures here are 'Suitable for damp locations, per UL 1598'. A fixture inside a shower or directly over a tub needs a different rating — ask your electrician.
should vanity lights face up or down
It depends on the fixture and the glare. Kohler's Artifacts is downlight only; the Orime can be positioned up or down. Whichever way, choose shades that diffuse the bulb so you are not looking into it.
how many lumens should a bathroom vanity light have
Nobody publishes a standard, and we will not invent one. What is published is the ceiling: Kohler's Memoirs sockets take up to 1,600 lumens each and the Orime's 900. Color rendering matters more than raw lumens at a mirror.
