The best toilet seats
The part of the bathroom you touch most, replaced least, and clean worst — because most seats never come off.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
Quick-release is the feature that matters most
Almost every seat now closes quietly. Far fewer come off. That is the more useful feature by a wide margin.
The hinge area — where the seat meets the bowl at the back — is the part of a toilet that gets dirtiest and gets cleaned least, because you cannot reach under a fixed hinge. A seat that lifts off leaves the whole rim exposed.
Kohler’s ReadyLatch is published as a positive lock and unlock latch, so the seat is secure in use and releases when you want it to. It also makes adjusting the fit easier.
Top-mount fixing, and why it helps
Traditional seats fasten with bolts through the bowl and nuts underneath the rim, which means reaching blind under the back of the toilet. Kohler publishes that with its Grip-Tight hardware “everything is done from above the bowl”.
That matters more than it sounds: seats loosen, and a seat you can tighten from above gets tightened. Loose and failing seats are covered here.
Quiet-close, briefly
Every Kohler seat here publishes Quiet-Close for both lid and seat. The mechanism is a damper in the hinge, and it is a wearing part. How soft-close works is explained here.
Match the seat to the bowl
Seats are shape-specific. Kohler publishes the elongated Cachet at 18-11/16 in. long overall and the round-front at 16-11/16 in. Both are 14-3/16 in. wide and fit the standard 5-1/2 in. mounting holes.
Measure from the midpoint between the seat bolts to the front of the rim: about 18.5 in. is elongated, about 16.5 in. is round. The full method is here.
The specification nobody publishes
Kohler does not publish a maximum user weight for any seat here, and neither does Brondell. That is true of almost every seat on the market. If it matters to you, ask the maker in writing before buying.
What Kohler does publish is compliance with IAPMO/ANSI Z124.5, the standard for plastic toilet seats, and plastic construction throughout, including the hinges.
The easiest renter upgrade in the bathroom
Every seat here rates Safe on our install rating. It uses the two holes already in the bowl, takes about ten minutes, and needs no water connection — except the EcoSeat, which is the reason it is the skip.
Keep the original seat and its bolts in a bag. Ten minutes on move-out day and the toilet is as you found it.

1. Best overall
Cachet ReadyLatch Quiet-Close Elongated Toilet Seat
Kohler · K-4636-RL · best for elongated bowls, and anyone who cleans the hinge
A ReadyLatch hinge that releases the seat for cleaning, Quiet-Close, and Grip-Tight fixing done from above the bowl.
The Kohler Cachet ReadyLatch Quiet-Close wins on the feature that makes the biggest difference to living with a seat: it comes off.
Kohler publishes a “ReadyLatch® hinge” that “provides a positive lock/unlock latch to securely hold seat in position, yet seat easily removes for cleaning or adjusting fit”. The hinge area is the dirtiest, least reachable part of a toilet, and a seat that lifts off is the only way to clean it properly.
It also publishes “Grip-Tight installation hardware” where “everything is done from above the bowl” — no reaching under the rim to hold a nut — plus a Quiet-Close lid and seat and Grip-Tight bumpers that hold it firmly in place.
Dimensions are published: 18-11/16 in. long overall, 14-3/16 in. wide, 1-1/8 in. thick, on 5-1/2 in. mounting holes. It meets IAPMO/ANSI Z124.5 and “Fits most elongated toilets”.

The ReadyLatch Quiet-Close seat with a battery nightlight: three brightness levels and up to 12 months on four AAs.
The Cachet Nightlight ReadyLatch adds a light to the same seat.
Kohler publishes “Dual LED lighting” that gives “guiding light when lid is down and task light when lid is lifted”, three brightness levels, and an “automatic 10-hour nightlight” cycle. The light is “designed to provide enough light to see the toilet without disrupting nighttime vision”.
It is “Battery-operated - no electrical cords required”, with “Up to 12 months of battery life (uses 4 AA batteries, not included)”. No outlet needed, which is exactly why it suits a bathroom that does not have one.

The one to skip
Brondell Swash EcoSeat S101 Non-Electric Bidet Seat
Brondell · EcoSeat S101 · best for anyone who would actually use a wash
A gentle-close seat with a bidet wash built in — more than you need if a quiet lid is all you are after.
This skip is about buying the right category.
The Brondell EcoSeat S101 publishes a “gentle-close, sit-upon seat and lid”, dual self-cleaning nozzles and adjustable water pressure, all “powered by water pressure alone”. It is a good bidet seat.
But it is a bidet seat. It needs a water connection to the toilet’s supply and it sits taller than a plain seat, at a published 2.55 in. If all you want is a lid that will not slam and a seat you can clean, it is more product than the job needs.
If you would use a wash, it is well worth considering — bidet seats are covered here.
