What is a skirted toilet?
The bumpy contour on the side of a toilet is the trapway. A skirted toilet covers it with a flat panel, and the difference is mostly felt with a cloth in your hand.

What the skirt covers
Every toilet has a trapway: the S-shaped channel that carries waste out of the bowl into the drain. On a standard toilet you can see it as a curved bulge on the side of the china, and the recess under that curve is the part of a bathroom nobody enjoys cleaning.
A skirted toilet extends the outer china down as a flat panel, so the side is a smooth vertical surface from rim to floor. The trapway is still there; it is simply behind the panel.
Concealed, skirted, hidden: the same idea
Makers use different words. American Standard publishes “Skirted two-piece with a concealed trapway”; Kohler writes “Skirted trapway simplifies cleaning”. Both mean the outside is flat. You will also see “fully concealed” for a skirt that reaches the floor and “semi- concealed” for a two-piece whose bowl is smooth but whose tank still overhangs.
What you actually gain
- Cleaning. A flat side wipes in one pass. This is the entire practical case, and it is a real one in a family bathroom.
- Looks. Skirted toilets read as more modern, which is taste rather than fact.
- Dust. Fewer contours means fewer ledges behind the bowl.
What it costs you
- Fewer models. Two of the toilets we cover publish a skirted design; the rest do not.
- A different mounting method. Because the skirt covers the floor bolts, skirted toilets use a bracket or mounting system rather than exposed closet bolts. American Standard ships an “EZ Install tool kit” with the Studio for exactly this reason.
- Rough-in sensitivity. The Studio publishes a 12 in. rough-in. With the bolts hidden, there is less room to fudge a measurement that is slightly off. Measuring yours is covered here.
Does the skirt change the flush?
No. Flush performance comes from the valve, the trapway diameter and the bowl design, all of which exist independently of the panel. The Studio publishes a 2-1/8 in. fully glazed trapway, the same figure as the unskirted Cadet PRO, Santa Rosa and Adair. What the flush numbers mean is here.
Is it worth it?
If the toilet you are replacing is in a bathroom that gets cleaned weekly by hand, the flat side is a genuine, small, daily improvement. If you are choosing between a skirted model and a better- documented unskirted one — a published MaP score, a published rough-in, a stated warranty — take the documentation. The skirt is a convenience, not a performance feature.

Questions people actually ask
what is a skirted toilet
A toilet whose outer china extends down as a flat panel, concealing the trapway. American Standard describes its Studio as a skirted two-piece with a concealed trapway; Kohler publishes that a skirted trapway simplifies cleaning.
are skirted toilets harder to install
They mount differently. Because the skirt covers the floor bolts, skirted models use a bracket or mounting system instead of exposed closet bolts — American Standard ships an EZ Install tool kit with the Studio for that reason.
do skirted toilets flush better
No. Flush performance comes from the valve, trapway and bowl. The skirted Studio publishes the same 2-1/8 in. fully glazed trapway as several unskirted toilets we cover.
what is a concealed trapway
The same thing as a skirt: the curved trapway channel is hidden behind smooth china rather than visible as a contour on the side of the bowl.
