What is a smart toilet seat?

A marketing word covering half a dozen genuinely different features, all of which have one thing in common.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A modern bathroom with a contemporary toilet

The short answer

An electric bidet seat with added functions: heated seat, warm water, warm air dryer, deodorizer, programmable presets. There is no standard for the word. The one thing they all share is a mains outlet within a published 3.9 to 4 feet of the toilet — which most older bathrooms do not have.

There is no definition

“Smart toilet seat” is a marketing phrase with no standard behind it. No certification body defines it and no manufacturer is constrained by it.

In practice it means an electric bidet seat, and the useful question is not whether a seat is smart but which of the six or seven features it actually has.

The features, and what each one needs

Heated seat. A resistive element under the seat surface. Brondell publishes three levels on the Thinline T22. In an unheated bathroom this is the feature owners say they would miss most, ahead of the wash.

Warm water. Two approaches. A tank holds a reservoir at temperature — Brondell publishes tank heating on the SE600 and SE400 — and runs out. An instant heater warms water as it passes and does not; Brondell publishes an instant ceramic heater on the Thinline T22.

Warm air dryer. An element and a fan. Brondell publishes an adjustable dryer on the SE600 and five levels with temperature control on the T22. It is slower than paper and it is the feature that matters most to anyone with limited reach.

Deodorizer. A small fan drawing air through a filter. Brondell publishes one on the SE400.

Presets and programmable settings. Store a pressure, position and temperature and recall them with one button. Published on the T22.

Nightlight. Exactly what it sounds like, and more useful than it sounds at three in the morning.

The one thing they all need

Every feature above needs mains power, and that is the constraint that decides whether this category is available to you at all.

The published cord lengths are short: Brondell publishes 3.9 feet on the Thinline T22 and 4 feet on the SE400, and no length at all for the SE600.

Four feet is not much. Measure from the outlet to the back of the toilet before you order, and never bridge the gap with an extension lead — a bathroom outlet should be GFCI protected and a domestic lead across a wet floor defeats that.

A great many older bathrooms have no outlet at all, which is why the non-electric warm water route exists and why it is the right answer for more people than the marketing suggests.

What nobody publishes

Two gaps run across the entire category, and both are the sort of thing you would expect to find.

Wattage. Not one bidet seat researched for this site publishes a wattage. That is unusual for a plug-in appliance with a heating element, and it means we cannot do the running-cost arithmetic we do for towel warmers, where WarmlyYours publishes 90 W and Zadro publishes 480 W.

Maximum user weight. Also absent everywhere. A plain plastic seat routinely publishes one; a seat costing several times as much does not.

We will not estimate either. If a figure matters to you, ask the manufacturer directly and get the answer in writing.

Are the extra features worth it?

Honestly, it depends on one thing: whether your bathroom is cold.

In a warm bathroom, a mechanical attachment gets you the wash for a fraction of the cost, and the heated seat and dryer are pleasant extras. The attachment picks are here.

In a cold bathroom the heated seat stops being a luxury. Sitting on a cold seat and then being washed with cold water is why people abandon mechanical bidets after a fortnight, and it is the single strongest argument for the electric category.

If you have a cold bathroom and no outlet, the honest sequence is: fix the room first with a bathroom heater, then buy a non-electric warm-water seat. It gets you most of the way for none of the wiring.

Every pick in full

3 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

Brondell Brondell Swash Thinline T22 Bidet Toilet Seat

1. Best overall

Brondell Swash Thinline T22 Bidet Toilet Seat

Brondell · Swash Thinline T22 · best for endless warm water in the thinnest package

Instant ceramic heater, three-level heated seat, 5-level dryer, side-arm controls, 3.9 in profile and a 3-year warranty.

The Swash Thinline T22 is the pick because of how it heats water.

Brondell publishes an “instant ceramic water heater” providing “endless warm water”. That is the distinction that matters most: tank-based seats hold a reservoir and run out, while an instant heater warms water as it passes and does not.

It also publishes a “three-level heated seat”, a “5-level warm air dryer with temperature control”, “conveniently located side arm controls” with programmable settings, and “3.9″(H)” — “the thinnest in the industry at 99mm”.

The “3-year limited warranty” is the longest of any seat on this site.

Renter verdict: Ask firstIt comes off cleanly, but it touches something a landlord may care about.

Why: Reversible in the sense that matters — it bolts on where the old seat was and comes off the same way. The published 3.9-foot cord is the shortest on this site, so the outlet has to be genuinely close to the toilet.

Brondell Brondell Swash SE600 Bidet Toilet Seat

2. Most features

Brondell Swash SE600 Bidet Toilet Seat

Brondell · Swash SE600 · best for the fullest set, if the outlet is close enough

Heated seat, tank heating for warm water, adjustable warm air dryer and a nightlight.

The Swash SE600 publishes the broadest feature list: a “heated seat and adjustable warm air dryer” and a “tank heating system provides warm water wash”.

The tank is the trade against the Thinline. A reservoir of warmed water gives you a finite amount before it cools, which for most single uses is ample and for a long wash is not.

It is the heaviest seat here at a published 9.9 lb elongated.

Brondell publishes neither a wattage nor an outlet requirement for this model, which on an appliance whose defining constraint is power is a real documentation gap.

Renter verdict: Ask firstIt comes off cleanly, but it touches something a landlord may care about.

Why: The seat itself swaps onto the existing bolt holes, so it is reversible. The catch is the plug: it needs a working outlet within cord reach of the toilet, and a lot of older bathrooms simply do not have one. That is a conversation with a landlord, not a drill.

Brondell Brondell Swash SE400 Bidet Toilet Seat

3. Best controls

Brondell Swash SE400 Bidet Toilet Seat

Brondell · Swash SE400 · best for one-touch operation from a seated position

Side-arm control panel with one-touch auto mode, a stainless steel nozzle, deodorizer and a published 4-foot cord.

The Swash SE400 publishes the control layout that makes the features usable: an “intuitive side-arm control panel” with “one-touch auto mode”.

It is also the only seat here whose maker states the nozzle material: “rust-resistant stainless steel nozzle”. That matters for cleaning — a smooth metal surface holds fewer deposits than plastic.

Brondell publishes “120V / 60Hz” with a 4-foot power cord, a “built-in deodorizer”, and “simple, DIY installation” with “no plumber required”.

A published cord length is more useful than it sounds when the outlet is the constraint.

Brondell Brondell Swash EcoSeat S102 Non-Electric Bidet Seat

The one to skip

Brondell Swash EcoSeat S102 Non-Electric Bidet Seat

Brondell · EcoSeat S102 · best for anyone without an outlet — which is most people

Not a smart seat at all, and frequently the better purchase: warm water with no electricity.

The skip on this page is deliberately not a smart seat, because for a great many readers the honest recommendation is to not buy one.

The EcoSeat S102 has no electronics, no heated seat, no dryer and no presets. Brondell publishes it as “powered by water pressure alone, no electricity required”.

What it does have is a “warm and cool water wash”, taken from the sink’s hot supply rather than heated on board. Which is the single feature most people actually want from a smart seat.

If your bathroom has no outlet, or you would rather not run an appliance beside a toilet, this gets you most of the benefit for none of the constraint. Covered in full here.

Renter verdict: Ask firstIt comes off cleanly, but it touches something a landlord may care about.

Why: It replaces the toilet seat on the existing bolt holes, which is fully reversible — but Brondell’s warm wash is fed from the basin’s hot supply, so there is a second connection under the sink. Reversible, still worth mentioning.

Questions people actually ask

what is a smart toilet seat

An electric bidet seat with added functions — heated seat, warm water, warm air dryer, deodorizer, presets. There is no standard behind the word, so the useful question is which of those features a given seat actually has.

do smart toilet seats need an outlet

Every one of them. Brondell publishes cords of 3.9 feet on the Thinline T22 and 4 feet on the SE400, so the outlet has to be close. Never use an extension lead in a bathroom — it defeats the GFCI protection the outlet should have.

how much electricity does a bidet seat use

Not one manufacturer on this site publishes a wattage, which is unusual for a plug-in appliance with a heating element. We will not estimate it. Ask the maker directly if the running cost matters to you.

is a smart toilet seat worth it

It depends on whether your bathroom is cold. In a warm bathroom a mechanical attachment gets you the wash for far less. In a cold one the heated seat is the difference between a habit and an abandoned purchase.
