The short answer

At the US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh (EIA, June 2026): a 60 W wall rail costs about 26 cents a day left on permanently, or roughly $96 a year. A 90 W freestanding rail on a two-hour timer is about three cents a day. Installation is free for a plug-in model.

Every figure on this site uses 18.34 cents per kWh, which is the US average residential retail price of electricity published by the Energy Information Administration in Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A, for June 2026.

We cite and date it because a national average is not your rate. Electricity in Hawaii and electricity in Louisiana are not close to each other, and the honest way to publish a running cost is to show the rate you used so a reader can swap in their own. Find yours on your last bill, divide the total by the kWh used, and rerun the sums below.

The timer is the whole ball game

Look at the Ibiza rows. Same product, same wattage, twelve times the cost, and the only difference is whether it is switched off when nobody is in the bathroom.

Neither WarmlyYours rail has a timer built in. A basic plug-in mechanical timer costs about as much as three months of running the rail, and it turns a $145-a-year appliance into a $12-a-year one. It also means you never have to remember to switch it on, which is the other reason towel warmers stop getting used.

Both buckets do publish timers with auto shut-off — Zadro at 15/30/45/60 minutes, VEVOR at 20/40/60 with a 24-hour delay start — which at several hundred watts is not optional.

Installation costs

Freestanding rail: $0. It arrives, you stand it up, you plug it in. WarmlyYours publishes the Ibiza as freestanding with a NEMA 5-15 plug.

Wall-mounted plug-in: $0 if you can use a drill. WarmlyYours ships the Palma with an “installation manual and hardware kit” and it uses a normal outlet, so there is no electrician involved. Drilling tile properly needs the right bit and patience, and it is not reversible.

Bucket: $0. It is an appliance on a plug.

Hardwired: an electrician. We are not going to quote you a figure, because electrical labour rates vary enormously by region and any number we published would be someone’s wrong number. What we will say is that it is the only option here with a real installation cost, and it is the one this site does not cover. The plug-in versus hardwired comparison is here.

The heating-bill question

People sometimes ask whether a towel warmer reduces their heating bill by warming the bathroom. It does not, meaningfully, and the arithmetic says why.

90 W is 307 BTU/hr, which WarmlyYours publishes. A small domestic room needs thousands of BTU/hr to change temperature noticeably. A rail is a rounding error against a heating system — it warms towels, and that is all it claims.

The related point: a rail is 100% efficient at turning electricity into heat, but so is every resistive heater. Efficiency is not what distinguishes these products; wattage and run time are.

The one number we cannot give you

Every rail and bucket here except VEVOR’s publishes a wattage, which is why this page exists. VEVOR publishes ETL certification, a child lock, an overheat threshold and a timer, and no rated power — so its running cost cannot be calculated.

We are not going to estimate it from the capacity. An estimate presented in a table of calculated figures reads as a calculated figure, and that is exactly the sort of quiet fabrication this site exists not to do.

WarmlyYours publishes 60 W, 120 V, 0.5 A and 205 BTU/hr for the Palma. If your plan is to leave a rail on all winter, this is the one to leave on: 60 × 24 ÷ 1,000 × $0.1834 = about 26 cents a day, roughly $96 a year.

The cost of that low figure is the install: it is wall-mounted and ships with a hardware kit, so it drills.

High wattage, short run. Zadro publishes 480 W and a timer at 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes: 480 × 0.5 ÷ 1,000 × $0.1834 = about four cents a cycle, or roughly $16 a year used daily.

The auto-off timer is doing real work here. A 480 W element left running would be a very different number.

At the US average of 18.34 cents per kWh, a 60 W wall rail left on permanently is about 26 cents a day or $96 a year. On a two-hour daily timer the same rail is about two cents a day. The timer, not the model, is what decides the cost.
