Drop-in vs undermount bathroom sinks
The look is the argument people have. The spec sheets show a different one: who drills the faucet holes, and what the counter has to be made of.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

What the two mountings actually are
A drop-in — also sold as self-rimming or top-mount — drops into a hole in the counter and rests on its own rim. The rim covers the cut edge, so the counter can be laminate, tile, wood or stone, and the cut does not have to be beautiful.
An undermount is fixed underneath the counter with clips and sealant, so the counter’s cut edge is what you see and touch. That edge has to be a material that can be polished and sealed, which in practice means stone, quartz or another solid surface.
Everything else people argue about follows from those two sentences.
The faucet holes decide more than you think
Read the four sheets side by side and the clearest difference is not the look. It is this:
- Archer drop-in: “Number of Deck Holes: 1” at 1-3/8 in.
- Pennington drop-in: “Number of Deck Holes: 3” at 1-1/4 in., on 4 in. centers
- Verticyl and Caxton undermounts: faucet holes “None — requires wall- or counter-mount faucet”
A drop-in therefore fixes your faucet type and saves you a drilling job. An undermount does the reverse: it leaves the faucet choice completely open, including wall-mounted, and hands the drilling to whoever fabricates the counter. Neither is better. They are different bills.
What the counter has to be
This is where most of the money hides. An undermount needs a counter that can carry a finished, sealed cut edge and the weight of a china basin hanging off it — and it needs cutting to the maker’s template. Kohler says so plainly on both of ours: the Verticyl asks that the cutter use Kohler’s current template, and the Caxton names the part number, “Under-mount, 1281904-7, required, not included”.
A drop-in asks for a hole. If you are keeping the counter you have, that difference is the whole decision, and it is why drop-ins dominate the retrofit end of this category. How to measure a vanity before you buy anything is here.
Cleaning, the usual argument
The case for undermount is real and small: no rim means you can wipe water off the counter straight into the bowl, and there is no seam between rim and counter to collect grime. The case against is equally real — the silicone bead under the lip is a seam too, it is harder to see, and when it fails the repair is a fabricator’s job rather than a cloth.
On a drop-in that seam is on top, visible, and resealable in ten minutes with a tube from the hardware store. Pick your seam.
The four, side by side
| Sink | Mounting | Deck holes | Basin depth | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kohler Archer K-2356-1 | Drop-in | 1, at 1-3/8 in. | 6-1/4 in. | Lifetime limited |
| Kohler Pennington K-2196-4 | Drop-in | 3, on 4 in. centers | 7 in. | Lifetime limited |
| Kohler Verticyl K-2882 | Undermount | None | 5-1/4 in. | Lifetime limited |
| Kohler Caxton K-20000 | Undermount | None | 5-5/16 in. | One-year limited |
Every cell is a figure Kohler publishes. Note the last column: three of these carry the vitreous china lifetime limited warranty and one carries a year, with no published difference in material to explain it.
Which to choose
Keeping your counter? Drop-in, and match the deck holes to the faucet you already own — one hole for the Archer, 4 in. centers for the Pennington.
Having a counter made? Undermount is worth it then, because the template, the drilling and the sealed edge are already part of the fabricator’s work rather than three new jobs. That is the only situation where the extra cost largely disappears.
Deciding on looks alone? Spend the money on the faucet instead. It is the part you touch twice a day, and the faucets we rank are here. If you are weighing a vessel basin as well, vessel against undermount is compared here.
If you rent
None of this is yours. Every sink here rates Owner-only on our install rating: a cutout in a counter and a trap underneath, with nothing reversible about either. How the rating works is here.
The renter’s version of a basin upgrade is everything that sits on it rather than in it, and what you can actually change in a rental is set out here.
What we have not done
We have not fitted any of these sinks, cut a counter, or measured a basin. Every figure above comes from Kohler’s specification sheet for that model and is cited at the foot of the page, and where a figure is missing — no cut-out dimensions on any of the four, no weights, no explanation for the warranty difference — this page says so rather than estimating. The argument about counters and seams follows from the published mounting method, and it is labeled as reasoning rather than as a test result. Prices are read live and shown with the date they were checked.
Every pick in full
4 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. Best drop-in sink
Archer 22-3/4 in. Rectangular Drop-In Bathroom Sink
Kohler · K-2356-1 · best for a single-hole faucet and a counter you would rather not have fabricated
One published deck hole at 1-3/8 in., a 16-7/8 x 12-9/16 x 6-1/4 in. basin, overflow, and a lifetime limited warranty on the china.
Kohler’s Archer is the drop-in to buy if your faucet is a single-hole one. Kohler publishes “Single faucet hole”, “Number of Deck Holes: 1” and “Faucet Hole(s) Size: 1-3/8″ (35 mm)” — three lines that between them remove an entire job from the project.
The basin is 16-7/8″ x 12-9/16″ and 6-1/4″ deep, with “With Overflow: Yes” and a 1-3/4″ drain hole, which is the standard size every pop-up drain is built for. Kohler recommends its K-8998 adjustable P-trap, sold separately.
It is ASME A112.19.2 / CSA B45.1, and Kohler states it is “ADA, OBC, CSA B651 compliant when installed to the specific requirements of these regulations” — the conditional is theirs, and it matters, because compliance depends on how it is fitted rather than on the sink alone.

Why: A sink dropped into a counter cutout and plumbed to the trap and supplies. No wall anchors, but it is still plumbing in a counter you are altering.
Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. Kohler — Archer K-2356-1 specification sheet: published drop-in mounting, deck hole count and size, basin dimensions, overflow, drain diameter, material, colors, standards and warranty. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.
What’s wrong with it
One hole means one faucet type. If your faucet is a centerset or a widespread, this sink will not take it and no amount of trim will fix that.
What we can’t tell you
Kohler publishes no cut-out template number on this sheet, so the hole you need in the counter has to come from the installation instructions rather than the specification.

2. Best for a centerset faucet
Pennington 20-1/4 in. Oval Drop-In Bathroom Sink
Kohler · K-2196-4 · best for replacing a basin under an existing 4 in. centerset faucet
Three deck holes on 4 in. centers, the deepest basin here at 7 in., and the cheapest sink on the page.
The Pennington is the other half of the drop-in decision. Kohler publishes “4″ (102 mm) centerset faucet holes”, with “Number of Deck Holes: 3” at 1-1/4″ (32 mm) — so it takes the commonest faucet in American bathrooms, and will not take a single-hole one.
Its basin is 16″ x 11″ but 7″ deep, the deepest of the four sinks on this page. Depth is the specification nobody shops on and everybody notices: it is the difference between a tap that splashes and one that does not.
If you are swapping a cracked basin and keeping the faucet, check your faucet’s centers first. Centerset against widespread is explained here.

Why: Same as any drop-in: a cutout in the counter and a trap underneath. Nothing about it is a tenant job.

What’s wrong with it
An oval basin in a rectangular cutout wastes counter space, and three holes commit you to centerset faucets for as long as the sink is in.
What we can’t tell you
No cut-out template published here either, and Kohler does not publish a weight for any of these sinks.

3. Best undermount
Verticyl 19-3/4 in. Rectangular Undermount Bathroom Sink
Kohler · K-2882 · best for a stone or solid-surface counter you are having fabricated anyway
A 17-1/4 x 13 in. basin with vertical sides — and “Faucet holes: None”, which is the whole undermount trade.
The Verticyl is the undermount we rank, and its specification sheet contains the line this page is really about: faucet holes “None — requires wall- or counter-mount faucet”.
That single absence moves three jobs from the sink to the counter. The counter has to be drilled for the faucet. It has to be cut to Kohler’s current template. And its exposed edge becomes a finished, sealed surface, because there is no rim covering it.
In return you get the clean look and the one genuine practical win: you can sweep water off the counter straight into the bowl, with no rim in the way. The basin is 17-1/4″ x 13″ and 5-1/4″ deep, with an overflow, and the china carries Kohler’s lifetime limited warranty.

Why: Fixed beneath a cut countertop. It is part of a vanity or counter project, not something you swap.
Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. Kohler — Verticyl K-2882 specification sheet. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.
What’s wrong with it
Laminate counters are out, or at least out of warranty with most fabricators — the exposed cut edge has to be solid and sealed, which is why undermount is a counter decision before it is a sink decision.
What we can’t tell you
Kohler names the template but publishes no cutout dimensions on the sheet, so you cannot check the fit against an existing cutout before buying.

4. Best undermount for a wider counter
Caxton 20-1/2 in. Rectangular Undermount Bathroom Sink
Kohler · K-20000 · best for the same job in a slightly larger basin
A 17-5/8 x 13-1/8 in. bowl with a published water depth, basin clamps included — and a one-year warranty, not the lifetime one.
The Caxton is the Verticyl’s larger sibling, and it publishes one number the others do not: a 3-5/8″ water depth alongside the 5-5/16″ bowl depth, which tells you how much of the basin is usable before the overflow takes over.
Kohler includes basin clamps and names the template explicitly — “Under-mount, 1281904-7, required, not included”. Read that as the honest version of the undermount pitch: the parts list does not end at the sink.
The catch is the warranty. Kohler lists a “KOHLER One-Year Limited Warranty” on this one where the Verticyl and both drop-ins carry the vitreous china lifetime limited warranty. Same material, same maker, different cover.

Questions people actually ask
what is the difference between a drop-in and an undermount bathroom sink
A drop-in sits in a cutout with its rim resting on the counter, so the rim hides the cut edge and the sink carries its own faucet holes. An undermount is fixed below the counter, so the counter's cut edge is exposed and has to be finished, and the faucet holes are drilled in the counter instead — Kohler publishes faucet holes as “None” on both of the undermounts we rank.
can you put an undermount sink in a laminate countertop
Most fabricators will not, and for good reason: the cut edge of a laminate counter is particleboard behind a thin surface, and it becomes the exposed, constantly wet edge of the basin. If your counter is laminate, a drop-in is the sink that was designed for it.
do drop-in sinks come with faucet holes
Yes, and the count is published. Kohler's Archer drop-in is a single hole at 1-3/8 in.; the Pennington is three holes at 1-1/4 in. on 4 in. centers. That means the sink decides your faucet type, which is the trade you make for never drilling the counter.
are undermount sinks harder to clean
They are easier on the counter and harder at the seam. With no rim you can sweep water straight into the bowl, but the silicone bead under the lip is still a seam — just one you cannot see, and one that needs a fabricator rather than a cloth when it eventually fails.
which bathroom sink is cheaper to install
A drop-in, in almost every retrofit. It needs a hole rather than a templated cut, no faucet drilling in the counter, and no finished edge — and it works on counter materials an undermount cannot use. The gap narrows to almost nothing if you are having a stone counter fabricated anyway.
