Vessel vs undermount bathroom sinks

The difference is about seven inches, and those seven inches decide the faucet, the vanity height and how you clean the counter every day.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A vessel sink on a bathroom counter

The short answer

Undermount suits most bathrooms: the rim sits at counter height, you can wipe straight into the bowl, and a standard counter-mount faucet works. A vessel sits on top — Kohler draws its Vox bowls at 6-7/8 to 7-7/16 in. tall — so it needs a lower counter and a tall or wall-mounted faucet.

The height problem, in inches

An undermount sink hangs beneath the counter, so its rim is the counter edge. A vessel sits on top, so its rim is the counter plus the bowl.

Kohler draws the Vox rectangle at 6-7/8 in. tall and the Vox oval at 7-7/16 in. On a 34 in. counter — the height on Kohler’s own ADA installation drawings for these sinks — the rectangle’s rim ends up at 40-7/8 in. That is why vessel sinks are so often paired with a lower vanity, and why the sink should be chosen with the vanity rather than after it.

Before you fall for a photograph, try it: stand at your counter, hold a tape measure up 7 in., and picture that as the rim for the shortest person in the house.

The faucet decides more than the sink

None of the four sinks here has faucet holes. Kohler’s line on every sheet is the same: “requires wall- or counter-mount faucet”.

For an undermount, that is an ordinary faucet mounted through the counter behind the bowl. For a vessel, the spout has to clear a rim about 7 in. above the counter and reach far enough over it to put the water in the middle of the bowl — which means a tall vessel faucet or one on the wall. Choose them together. The faucet picks are here.

Cleaning

This is the undermount’s strongest point. With the rim below the counter surface, you can sweep water, toothpaste and hair straight off the counter into the bowl. There is no lip for any of it to collect against.

Its weak point is the seam under the counter edge, where sink meets stone, which wants a regular wipe. A vessel has no hidden seam, but it has an outside to clean and a base where it meets the counter.

The numbers, side by side

  • Verticyl (undermount): basin 17-1/4 x 13 in., 5-1/4 in. deep; water depth not published.
  • Caxton (undermount): bowl 17-5/8 x 13-1/8 in., 5-5/16 in. deep, 3-5/8 in. water depth.
  • Vox rectangle (vessel): bowl 21-7/8 x 15-3/8 in., 5 in. deep, 3-1/4 in. water depth; 6-7/8 in. tall.
  • Vox oval (vessel): bowl 19-11/16 x 14-13/16 in., 5-1/2 in. deep; water depth not published; 7-7/16 in. tall.

The vessels have the bigger bowls on paper. They also sit higher, so a bigger bowl does not automatically mean an easier sink to use.

The counter has to suit it

An undermount leaves the counter’s cut edge exposed all the way round the bowl, so it goes with stone, quartz or solid-surface tops cut to the maker’s template. In practice, that makes it a new-counter decision.

A vessel needs a drain hole and a faucet hole (or a wall faucet) rather than a large cut-out, which is why it is the common choice when the counter is staying. Vanities with the top already fitted are here.

Which to choose

Undermount if you are replacing the counter anyway, want the easiest daily wipe down, or have children or older adults using the sink.

Vessel if the counter is staying and can take a drain hole, you have a lower vanity or can fit one, and you want the bowl to be the feature of the room.

If you rent

Every sink here rates Owner-only on our install rating, because each one means cutting a counter. A chipped or stained rental sink is a maintenance request. What you can change in a rental is here.

Kohler Verticyl 19-3/4 in. Rectangular Undermount Bathroom Sink

1. Best undermount

Verticyl 19-3/4 in. Rectangular Undermount Bathroom Sink

Kohler · K-2882 · best for a clean, modern counter with a standard faucet

A 17-1/4 by 13 in. basin with vertical sides, 5-1/4 in. deep, and a lifetime limited warranty on the current sheet.

The Kohler Verticyl is the undermount to start with. Kohler describes a “Geometric rectangular basin with vertical sides”, and the sheet puts the basin at 17-1/4 by 13 in. and 5-1/4 in. deep, with an overflow and a 1-3/4 in. drain.

Vertical sides are the point. More of the footprint is usable bowl, which is what you want from a sink you actually wash in rather than admire.

The current US sheet prints the “KOHLER Vitreous China Bathroom Sink Lifetime Limited Warranty”, and it comes in seven colors, from White to Teal and Aspen Green. Like every sink here, it has no faucet holes.

2. Best rounded undermount

Caxton 20-1/2 in. Rectangular Undermount Bathroom Sink

Kohler · K-20000 · best for the easiest bowl to keep clean

A 17-5/8 by 13-1/8 in. rounded-rectangle bowl, 5-5/16 in. deep with 3-5/8 in. of water depth, clamps included.

The Kohler Caxton is the softer-cornered alternative, and the one we would choose for a family bathroom.

Kohler publishes the bowl at 17-5/8 by 13-1/8 in., 5-5/16 in. deep, with 3-5/8 in. of water depth — the depth the bowl holds before the overflow. Basin clamps come in the box.

The cut-out template is listed as “required, not included”, and Kohler is blunt that it is not responsible for cut-out errors when the wrong template is used. Make sure your fabricator has the current one.

3. Best vessel

Vox 22-3/4 in. Rectangular Vessel Bathroom Sink

Kohler · K-5373 · best for a statement bowl on a lower vanity

22-5/8 by 16-1/8 in. and 6-7/8 in. tall, with a 5 in. deep bowl, 3-1/4 in. of water depth and the template included.

The Kohler Vox rectangle is the vessel to buy if you have decided on a vessel. Kohler publishes the full set: 22-5/8 by 16-1/8 in. overall, 6-7/8 in. tall, a 21-7/8 by 15-3/8 in. bowl that is 5 in. deep, and 3-1/4 in. of water depth.

Unlike the undermounts, its template is “required, included”. It comes in White, Biscuit and Black Black.

The height is the thing to plan around, and it is covered below.

20 by 14-7/8 in. and 7-7/16 in. tall, with a 5-1/2 in. deep bowl and an overflow. White only.

The Kohler Vox oval is the same idea in a softer shape: 20 by 14-7/8 in. overall and a 19-11/16 by 14-13/16 in. bowl, 5-1/2 in. deep, with an overflow.

It is the tallest sink here on Kohler’s drawing at 7-7/16 in., and it comes in white only. The template is included.

Questions people actually ask

which is better vessel or undermount sink

For most bathrooms, undermount: the rim sits at counter height, you can wipe straight into the bowl, and a standard counter-mount faucet works. A vessel adds about 7 inches of height on Kohler's Vox drawings, so it needs a lower counter and a taller faucet.

how tall is a vessel sink

Kohler draws its Vox rectangle at 6-7/8 inches tall and the Vox oval at 7-7/16 inches. Add that to your counter height to find where the rim will sit.

do vessel sinks need a special faucet

Yes. None of the Kohler sinks here has faucet holes, and a vessel's rim sits about 7 inches above the counter, so the faucet has to be tall enough to clear it and reach over, or be mounted on the wall.

The best bathroom faucets

can you put an undermount sink in an existing counter

Only if the counter can be cut to the maker's template and its cut edge can be left exposed. In practice undermount sinks usually go in with a new stone, quartz or solid-surface top.
