The best tub spouts
The spout you choose is decided by a pipe you cannot see. Measure it first, and the right spout almost chooses itself.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
Step one: find out what you have
There are two kinds of tub spout, and they are not interchangeable. A slip-fit spout slides over a smooth copper pipe and locks with a small set screw underneath. A threaded spout screws onto a threaded pipe, with no set screw anywhere. How to tell which you have is here.
Once the old spout is off, measure one more thing: how far the pipe sticks out from the finished wall. That number decides which spouts will fit.
The connection codes, decoded
CWT means copper water tube — the smooth copper pipe a slip-fit or sweat spout goes on. IPS means iron pipe size — a threaded connection. The fraction is the pipe size. So “1/2″ CWT” is half-inch copper, and “1/2″ IPS” is a half-inch threaded pipe.
The pipe window
Delta publishes two: 1/2 to 3/4 in. from the finished wall for the U1075-PK, and 1/4 to 1/2 in. beyond the adapter’s threads for the RP19820. The others publish none.
If a long threaded pipe sticks several inches out of the wall, none of these is designed for it. Shortening or replacing that pipe is a plumber’s job, and the reason is on the tub spout explainer: the nipple you are turning is screwed into a fitting inside the wall.
The diverter is the part that fails
On a bath-shower combination, the spout holds the diverter that sends water up to the shower. When it wears, water keeps escaping from the spout and the shower goes weak. If your shower pressure has dropped and the spout dribbles while it runs, a new spout is the fix, not a new shower head. Other causes of weak pressure are here.
Length and look
The published lengths here run from 5-1/4 in. (U1075-PK) to 5-1/2 in. (RP19820 and, by its specification table, the Moen 3926). Measure your old spout, so the new one reaches the tub the same way and does not leave a gap where the old escutcheon sat.
Stock
Every spout here was out of stock or sold out on the maker’s own store when we checked. The buy links go to current listings rather than the maker’s page, so check the model number before you order.
If you rent
Every spout here rates Ask first on our install rating. Nothing is drilled, but it is the landlord’s plumbing, and a stuck threaded spout can loosen the fitting inside the wall. A dribbling diverter in a rental is a maintenance request.
Every pick in full
3 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.
1. Best overall
Diverter Tub Spout, Chrome
Delta · U1075-PK · best for when you are not sure what pipe you have
Fits 1/2 in. copper slip-fit or 1/2 in. and 3/4 in. threaded pipe, with a published 1/2 to 3/4 in. pipe window.
The Delta U1075-PK is the pick because it covers the most pipes. Delta lists two connections: “Slip fit 1/2″ CWT” or “Threaded 1/2″ or 3/4″ IPS”.
Just as important, Delta publishes the window: the pipe must stick out a minimum of 1/2 in. and a maximum of 3/4 in. from the finished wall. That one measurement tells you before you buy whether it will fit.
The spout is 5-1/4 in. long with a built-in diverter, in chrome or polished brass.

Why: Nothing is drilled and the old spout can go back on. But it is the landlord's plumbing, and on a threaded spout the nipple can come loose inside the wall.

The one to skip
Tub Spout, Pull-Up Diverter, Chrome (Slip-On)
Delta · RP19820 · best for only a copper stub already cut to its window
A non-metallic slip-on that fits only a copper stub cut to a narrow 1/4 to 1/2 in. window.
The Delta RP19820 does one job, on one pipe, and needs that pipe to be just so.
It slips onto 1/2 in. copper with an included adapter, and Delta says the copper stub must extend 1/4 to 1/2 in. beyond the adapter’s threaded portion to the finished wall, chamfered and free of burrs. If your pipe is outside that window, it is a plumber’s job before it is a spout job.
Delta also lists the material as non-metallic, for a fitting that sits at knee height in a bath. The U1075-PK fits the same copper pipe and more besides.

Questions people actually ask
how do i know what tub spout i need
Check for a set screw underneath your old spout. A set screw means slip-fit onto copper; none means threaded. Then, with the spout off, measure how far the pipe sticks out from the finished wall and match it to the spout's published window.
are tub spouts universal
No. Slip-fit and threaded spouts are not interchangeable. Delta's U1075-PK comes closest, fitting 1/2 inch copper slip-fit or 1/2 and 3/4 inch threaded pipe, as long as the pipe sticks out 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the wall.
how far should the pipe stick out for a tub spout
It depends on the spout. Delta publishes 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the finished wall for the U1075-PK, and 1/4 to 1/2 inch beyond the adapter's threads for the slip-on RP19820.
what does cwt and ips mean on a tub spout
CWT is copper water tube, the smooth copper pipe a slip-fit or sweat spout goes on. IPS is iron pipe size, a threaded connection. The fraction is the pipe size.
