How to fix a tub spout diverter

Water dribbling from the spout while the shower runs is a worn diverter gate. It is not a repair — it is a fifteen-dollar part and a hex key.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

Water running from a chrome bath faucet with a handheld shower on the tub rim

The short answer

Replace the spout, not the gate. When water keeps running from the spout with the shower on, the diverter inside has worn, and tub spouts are not serviceable parts. Identify slip-on (a set screw underneath) or threaded (it screws off), buy the matching type, and fit it with a 1/8 in. hex key and PTFE tape.

Why a diverter fails

A tub spout diverter is a gate. Lift it and water is blocked from the spout, so it takes the only other route available and goes up to the shower head. The gate seals against a seat inside a plastic or metal body, and that seal wears. When it stops sealing, some of the water keeps taking the easy path out of the spout and the shower goes weak.

No maker we cover publishes a service life or a repair kit for the gate. That is why the fix is a new spout: the part is inexpensive, and the labor is a hex key.

First, rule out the two other faults

  • Dripping with everything off is a valve cartridge behind the wall, not the spout. Different part, different job.
  • Weak shower with no spout leak is usually the head, not the diverter. Work through the pressure fixes here — descale the head and check the shut-off valve first.
  • A diverter that will not stay up is the same worn gate, seen from the other side. Same fix.

Slip-on or threaded: the whole decision

Delta’s installation instructions treat these as two different products, and so should you. A slip-on spout rides on a copper stub and is locked with a set screw underneath; Delta’s slip-on procedure ends “Install set screw (3) and tighten to secure spout to copper tube. Do not overtighten.” A threaded spout screws onto a 1/2 in. iron nipple, and that procedure reads “Apply plumbers tape to threads. Add sealant to groove as needed in back of wall escutcheon (3). Install spout and hand tighten firmly against wall.”

There is no adapter that turns one into the other in place, so identify yours before ordering. Delta also publishes the tolerance for the copper version: “End of copper tube must be chamfered and free of any burrs to prevent o-ring damage during installation.”

What Delta publishes about the pipe behind the spout

Two published requirements are worth knowing even if you never touch the plumbing, because they explain why some showers behave oddly:

“Supply plumbing between valve body and tub spout must be a minimum of 1/2″ (13 mm) copper or iron pipe in a straight drop 8″ (203 mm) minimum and 18″ (457 mm) maximum long with only one iron pipe or copper 90° elbow to the tub spout nipple.”

And a warning that rules out a tempting shortcut: “Do not connect hand shower direct to tub spout. Do not connect hand shower in lieu of a tub spout to a tub/shower valve. Do not use PEX tubing for a tub spout drop.” Delta also notes that “Non-diverter tub spouts can be used with shower diverter systems” — if the diverting happens at the valve, your spout does not need a gate at all.

When to stop and call someone

If the nipple turns in the wall while you are unscrewing a threaded spout, stop. That is the pipe moving behind the tile, and retightening it blind risks a leak inside the wall. Delta’s own warranty documentation recommends “using a professional plumber for all installation and repair of faucets”, which is the right call the moment the pipe moves.

If you rent

A spout is the landlord’s fixture, plumbed into their wall. Swapping one is reversible if the pipe stays put, but it is not a change to make without asking — and a failed diverter is a repair they usually owe you. How to ask is covered here.

3. Best if you cannot tell which you have

Diverter Tub Spout, Chrome

Delta · U1075-PK · best for either connection

Published for slip fit or threaded, so it covers both cases from one box.

Delta’s U1075-PK publishes “Slip fit 1/2" CWT” or “Threaded 1/2" or 3/4" IPS” compatibility, with the pipe extending a minimum of 1/2 in. and a maximum of 3/4 in. from the finished wall.

That window is the catch: a universal spout still has a pipe-length requirement, and measuring before you buy is the only way to know you are inside it.

Questions people actually ask

why does water come out of the tub spout when the shower is on

The diverter gate inside the spout has worn and no longer seals, so part of the flow keeps taking the short route out of the spout. Tub spouts are not serviceable, so the fix is a new spout.

can you repair a tub spout diverter

No maker we cover publishes a repair kit or a service life for the diverter gate. Replacement is the published route, and the part is inexpensive.

how do i know if my tub spout is slip-on or threaded

Look underneath where the spout meets the wall. A set screw in a small hole means slip-on, riding on a copper stub. No set screw means it is threaded onto an iron pipe nipple and unscrews counterclockwise.

What is a tub spout?

what tools do you need to change a tub spout

A 1/8 in. hex key for a slip-on set screw, a cloth or strap wrench for a threaded spout, and PTFE tape. Delta's instruction for both types is to hand tighten firmly against the wall and not to overtighten.
