The best bathtub upgrades
Nothing here needs a new tub, a tiler or a plumber's van. Seven upgrades to the bath you already own, ranked on what their makers actually publish.
By Sawyer V. · · How we research

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
What we judged these on, in order
A bathtub is the one fixture in a bathroom that people rarely replace and often dislike using. Every upgrade below was picked against the same five questions, in this order:
- Does it change the bath you actually take? Reaching the water, standing up safely, keeping the floor dry, ending warm. Decoration is not an upgrade.
- Does the maker publish the number that matters? A load rating for a bar, a cup count for a mat, a hose length for a handheld, a gauge for a liner. Where nobody publishes, the pick says so.
- Does it fit the tub that is already there? Nothing here needs tiling, a new tub or a plumber’s van. The most invasive job on this page is four anchors for a grab bar.
- Does it come off? Every pick carries our install rating, and the skip below is a skip precisely because it does not.
- Will it still be good in a year? A published warranty, stainless or rubber rather than a coating, and no consumable parts. Nothing on this page needs cartridges.
The order to do them in
You do not need seven things. This is the order we would work through them, safety first where safety and cost coincide:
- A non-slip mat in the tub. The least expensive item here and the one that prevents the worst outcome.
- A liner, if water escapes when you shower over the tub. About the same money.
- A handheld head. The upgrade you notice every single day.
- A grab bar at the step-in point, if anyone in the house is unsteady — and before they are, not after.
- A diverter spout, if the shower above the tub has gone weak.
- A floor mat and a towel warmer, once the practical things are done.
The safety numbers, in one place
Three published figures do more for a bathtub than any product claim. MedlinePlus, from the NIH National Library of Medicine, is the source for all three:
- “Put non-slip suction mats or rubber silicone decals in the bottom of your tub to prevent falls” — the in-tub mat.
- “Do not use towel racks as grab bars. They can’t support your weight.” Moen publishes 500 lb for the 8716; no towel bar maker publishes any load rating at all. That comparison is here.
- “Set the temperature on your water heater to no more than 120°F (49°C) to prevent burns.” It is free, and it matters more in a tub than a shower because a bath is filled once and sat in.
MedlinePlus also specifies that grab bars “should be secured vertically or horizontally to the wall, not diagonally”, which is the detail most home installations get wrong.
Why the diverter matters more in a tub
In a shower stall, the water has one place to go. Over a tub it has two, and a worn diverter sends half of it to the wrong one — you stand under a weak shower while the spout dribbles at your ankles. It is the single most common complaint about a shower-over-tub, and it is a $40 part rather than a plumbing job.
Delta publishes the constraint that decides which spout you can buy: the supply must be “a minimum of 1/2″ (13 mm) copper or iron pipe in a straight drop 8″ (203 mm) minimum and 18″ (457 mm) maximum long”, and slip-on and threaded spouts do not interchange. The tub spouts are ranked here.
Two measurements to take first
Both of the cheap picks here are sized products, and both are sold in more than one size:
- The flat floor of your tub, end to end. Published mat lengths differ by seven inches: Vive’s is 28 x 16 in., Gorilla Grip’s is 35 x 16 in., and Moen’s adhesive mat is 34 x 16 in. Measure the flat part only — suction cups do not hold on the curve where the floor turns up into the wall of the tub.
- Rod height to the top of the tub wall. A standard liner is 72 x 72 in., which is what iDesign publishes. If your rod sits higher than usual, a 72 in. liner stops short and water runs down the outside of the tub instead of into it.
Neither is an expensive mistake, but both are returns, and both are avoidable with a tape measure.
What we left out, and why
Walk-in tubs and tub-to-shower conversions are real answers to a difficult bath, and they are remodels: plumbing, tile, sometimes permits. This page is for the tub you have.
Tub refinishing kits are left out because the coating changes what else you can fit: Gorilla Grip, for one, publishes that its mat is “not for use on newly refinished tubs, shower pans, or similar surfaces”.
Bath trays, pillows and caddies are left out for the reason we leave most accessories out: the makers publish nothing to rank them on — no load rating, no materials, no dimensions in many cases.
A heated floor belongs to a different project. It goes under new tile, and it is covered on its own page: heated bathroom floors.
Prices, roughly
The liner and the tub mat are the least expensive things here, and they are also the two we would buy first. The handheld head, the grab bar and the diverter spout sit in a middle bracket that has barely moved in years. The stone floor mat and the towel warmer bucket are the larger purchases, and they are comfort rather than function. Live prices appear beside each pick, pulled from Amazon rather than typed in by us.
If you rent
Five of the seven rate Safe on our install rating: the handheld, the tub mat, the liner, the floor mat and the towel warmer all arrive and leave with you, and the head threads back off the arm on move-out day. The diverter spout rates Ask first — it is the landlord’s plumbing, and a failed diverter is usually their repair to make. The grab bar rates Owner-only, and it is the one worth asking for. How to ask is covered here.
Every pick in full
7 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. The upgrade you use every bath
Moen Engage Magnetix Handheld Shower, 3.5″ head
Moen · 26100 · best for rinsing hair, the tub, a child or a dog
A 3.5 in. handheld on a 60 in. hose with a magnetic dock, six sprays and a lifetime warranty.
A fixed head points at the middle of the tub, which is no help when you are kneeling beside it. Moen’s Engage 26100 publishes a “60″” hose and “Includes Magnetix Docking System”, so the head returns to its cradle without lining up a clip with wet hands.
Six spray functions — “Wide Coverage; Downpour; Relaxing Massage; Massage; Soothing Massage; Rinse” — on a 3.5 in. head, with a limited lifetime warranty, and it fits the existing shower arm with one wrench. The swap takes about fifteen minutes.

Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. Moen, Engage Six-Function 3 1/2″ Diameter Spray Head Handheld Shower (26100). How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.
What’s wrong with it
Its published flow is “2.5 Gpm (9.5 L/Min) Max.”, the full standard rather than a water-saving figure.
What we can’t tell you
Moen publishes no connection size on the product page.

2. Best for footing in the tub
28 in. x 16 in. Bath Mat
Vive Health · LVA1017M · best for a smooth tub floor
Latex-free rubber, 28 x 16 in., with 116 published suction cups and a 60-day guarantee.
A wet tub floor is the most slippery surface in the house, and MedlinePlus is direct about the fix: “Put non-slip suction mats or rubber silicone decals in the bottom of your tub to prevent falls”.
Vive’s bath mat is the one in our catalog that publishes the number behind that claim: “116 strong suction cups hold the bath mat securely in place”, in “Latex-free rubber”, washable in cold water with a 60-day guarantee. The tub mats are ranked here.

What’s wrong with it
Suction needs a smooth tub: Vive says the base “requires a smooth surface to secure to”, which rules out textured and refinished tubs.

3. Best for getting in and out
Home Care 16 in. Concealed Screw Grab Bar, Stainless
Moen · 8716 · best for the step over the tub wall
Rated to 500 lb, ADA compliant, 1.25 in. stainless — the only fixture here built to hold a person.
Stepping over a tub wall on a wet foot is the moment a bathroom becomes dangerous. Moen’s 8716 publishes “supports up to 500 lbs.” and “complies with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifications”, in 16 in. of “stainless steel construction” at 1.25 in. diameter.
The ADA Standards put grab bars “in a horizontal position, 33 inches (840 mm) minimum and 36 inches (915 mm) maximum above the finish floor”, and Moen’s SecureMount fixing is published for installation “at any angle on the wall, with or without studs”. The grab bars are ranked here.

Why: A grab bar has to hold a falling adult. It is drilled and anchored, and we treat that as a job for an owner or a professional who knows what is behind the tile.
Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. Moen — Home Care 16 in. grab bar 8716 product page. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.
What’s wrong with it

4. Best fix for a weak shower over the tub
Tub Diverter Spout with 1/2 in. IPS Connection, Chrome
Moen · 3926 · best for a diverter that no longer holds
A threaded diverter spout on a 1/2 in. IPS connection, with the only lifetime warranty among the spouts we cover.
If water keeps running out of the spout while the shower is on, the diverter gate has worn, and no maker sells a repair kit for it. Moen’s 3926 publishes a 1/2 in. IPS connection, a built-in diverter and a “limited lifetime warranty”.
Check what you have before ordering: a spout with a set screw underneath is slip-on and needs a slip-on replacement, not a threaded one. The diagnosis and the swap are covered here.

5. Cheapest thing that stops the splash
Vinyl Shower Liner, Clear
iDesign · 12030 · best for a shower over the tub with water escaping
A 10-gauge clear vinyl liner, 72 x 72 in., on 12 reinforced rustproof grommets.
Water on the floor is what turns a bath into a chore. iDesign’s vinyl liner publishes “non-toxic PVC vinyl” at “10-gauge”, 72 x 72 in., with “12 reinforced rustproof metal grommets”.
Gauge is the one specification that separates liners, and it is the reason a heavier liner hangs inside the tub instead of billowing against your legs. The liners are ranked here.

6. Best for the floor you step onto
Dorai Home Bath Stone Mat (Zen)
Dorai Home · Bath Stone Mat — Zen · best for a bathroom floor that never dries
A diatomaceous-earth stone mat on a rubberized pad, published to evaporate water in seconds.
MedlinePlus pairs the in-tub mat with the floor outside it: “Use a non-skid bath mat outside the tub for firm footing” and “Keep the floor outside the tub or shower dry.”
Dorai’s Bath Stone is “Compressed diatomaceous earth and paper”, published to “Evaporate[] in seconds to keep your feet and your floor dry”, and it ships with a rubberized bottom pad so the stone itself does not slide. The bath mats are compared here.

7. Best end to a bath
Zadro 20-Liter Towel Warmer Bucket
Zadro · TWB01 · best for a warm towel without a wall fixture
A 20-liter heated tub with a published 15, 30, 45 or 60 minute timer and auto shut-off.
A long soak ends with a cold towel unless something warms it. Zadro’s bucket is a “20-Liter large towel heater tub” that lets you “set timer to 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes before automatically shutting off”, standing on the floor with an 83 in. cord and a “polarized B power plug for increased safety”.
It warms one towel per cycle rather than keeping towels dry all day, which is exactly the job at the end of a bath. The buckets are ranked here.

The one to skip
Home Care Adhesive Bath Mat
Moen · DN7050 · best for a tub you own and never intend to change
It solves the same problem as a suction mat by gluing itself to your tub floor.
This skip is about what the mat leaves behind, not how it performs.
Moen’s Home Care mat is a good product on paper: 34 x 16 in., ADA compliant, trimmable — “Mat is easily trimmed to any smaller size desired” — with a “limited lifetime warranty”. The catch is the mounting: “a waterproof adhesive backing”, applied to a tub floor Moen requires to be completely clean and dry.
That is a permanent layer bonded to the tub. Removing it is a scraping job, which makes it the wrong choice for a rental and a poor one for anyone who might refinish the tub. The Vive mat above does the same job with 116 suction cups and lifts off in a second. Moen’s own store also had this one sold out when we checked.

Questions people actually ask
what is the best upgrade for an old bathtub
A handheld shower head. It threads onto the existing shower arm with one wrench, and Moen's Engage 26100 publishes a 60 in. hose and a magnetic dock, which is what lets you rinse hair, the tub itself and a child without a rebuild.
how do you make a bathtub less slippery
A suction mat with a published cup count. MedlinePlus advises putting non-slip suction mats or rubber silicone decals in the bottom of the tub, and Vive publishes 116 suction cups on its 28 x 16 in. mat. Suction needs a smooth tub, not a textured or newly refinished one.
why is my shower weak when the tub spout still runs
The diverter gate inside the spout has worn and no longer seals, so part of the flow keeps taking the short route out of the spout. Tub spouts are not serviceable, so the fix is a new spout — matched to whether yours is slip-on or threaded.
can you upgrade a bathtub in a rental
Most of these, yes. A handheld head, a suction mat, a liner, a floor mat and a towel warmer all rate Safe on our install rating and leave no trace. A grab bar needs anchors and the landlord's permission, and a spout is their plumbing.
