Two numbers, two orders of magnitude apart
A grab bar and a towel bar can look almost identical on the wall. The published ratings could not be further apart:
- Moen 8716 grab bar: 500 lb.
- Delta 41842 grab bar: 500 lb when properly installed.
- ADA benchmark for grab bars: 250 lb of force on the bar, fixings and wall together.
- Command towel bar strips: 3 lb (medium) and 5 lb (large).
Most drilled towel bars publish no rating at all, which tells you something too: nobody expects them to take a load.
Why people grab the towel bar
Because it is there. It sits at hand height beside the bath, and a slip happens faster than anyone can think. In a bathroom where someone is unsteady, the towel bar will get grabbed eventually.
The answer is not to warn people off it. It is to make the thing within reach a grab bar.
What makes a grab bar a grab bar
A published load rating, well above the ADA’s 250 lb benchmark. A diameter a hand can close around — both grab bars here are 1-1/4 in. Clearance from the wall for the knuckles; Delta publishes 1-1/2 in. Proper anchoring into studs or blocking. A towel bar has none of these by design.
Read the fine print on “assist bars”
Some bars sit in between. Delta’s 12 in. 41712-SS is sold as an ADA grab bar, but its own page says “Assist Bars are not designed to support the total weight of an individual”. If the maker says it is not designed for a person’s full weight, treat it as a towel bar. The grab bars we recommend are here.
A grab bar makes a fine towel bar
The reverse works. A grab bar holds towels without complaint, and fitting one where the towel bar would go puts a rated bar exactly where hands reach in a hurry. Delta offers finishes like Champagne Bronze and Matte Black, so it need not look clinical.

A renter-safe adhesive towel bar on strips 3M rates at 3 and 5 lb.
The Command Bath hand towel bar is an excellent towel bar and a good example of the difference. It mounts on Command water-resistant strips, and 3M rates the medium strip at 3 lb and the large at 5 lb.
That is plenty for a wet hand towel and nothing like enough for a person. It is designed to let go cleanly when you pull the tab, which is exactly what you want from a towel bar in a rental and exactly what you do not want from something you might grab.
