The best grab bars
This is the one bathroom product where the published number is a safety number. Read it carefully, then have the bar anchored properly.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks

The number that matters, and what it assumes
The ADA sets the benchmark. Its structural-strength rule, section 609.8, says that allowable stresses must not be exceeded when a force of 250 pounds is applied at any point on the grab bar, fastener, mounting device, or supporting structure.
Two things follow. Moen and Delta’s 500 lb figures are well above that benchmark. And the ADA counts the wall as part of the grab bar: the rating covers the bar, the fixings and the structure behind them together. A 500 lb bar in a weak wall is not a 500 lb installation.
Anchoring is the job
Delta’s advice on its 41712 is that “wood blocking is preferable behind all wall surfaces”. Moen’s SecureMount is designed to work with or without studs. Our position is stricter than either: a grab bar goes into studs or blocking wherever it can, fitted by someone who knows what is behind the tile.
Suction and adhesive grab bars are sold, and we will not recommend them. A grab bar has to take a falling adult, which is far beyond any adhesive or suction rating we have seen. Why suction and adhesive fail in a shower is here.
Height
ADA section 609.4 places grab bars between 33 and 36 inches above the floor. That rule is written for accessible public facilities, but it is a sensible reference at home. The best height for a particular person is the one they can reach and push against comfortably.
Where they go
Beside the toilet, for sitting and standing. At the edge of the tub, for stepping in and out. Along the long wall of a tub or shower, for balance while bathing. A 16 in. bar suits the first two; a long bar like the 42 in. Delta suits the third.
Diameter and grip
Both recommended bars are 1-1/4 in. (1.25 in.) in diameter, which is the size most hands close around securely. Delta adds its wall clearance, 1-1/2 in., which is the gap your knuckles need.
They do not have to look clinical
Delta offers the 41842 in six finishes, and Moen lists several for the 8716. A grab bar that matches the faucet is more likely to be fitted in the first place.
If you rent
Every bar here rates Owner-only on our install rating, because it has to be drilled into structure. If you need one, ask your landlord; it is exactly the kind of request worth making. How to ask is here.
Every pick in full
2 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. Best overall
Home Care 16 in. Concealed Screw Grab Bar, Stainless
Moen · 8716 · best for beside a toilet or at the edge of a tub
Rated to 500 lb, ADA compliant, 1.25 in. stainless, with a limited lifetime warranty.
The Moen Home Care 16 in. grab bar is the pick because Moen publishes everything a grab bar should: it “supports up to 500 lbs.”, it “complies with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifications”, and it is stainless steel at a 1.25 in. diameter — a size most hands can close around.
Its SecureMount system is designed “for secure and lasting installation at any angle on the wall, with or without studs”. We would still fix it into studs or blocking wherever possible; the rating is only as good as the wall behind it.
Sixteen inches suits the side of a toilet or the edge of a tub. Moen sells the same bar in other lengths; the warranty is a limited lifetime.

Why: A grab bar has to hold a falling adult. It is drilled and anchored, and we treat that as a job for an owner or a professional who knows what is behind the tile.

What’s wrong with it
Sixteen inches is short for the long wall of a tub or shower.
What we can’t tell you
Moen does not publish the wall-clearance or projection figures on this product page.

2. Best long bar
42 in. Contemporary Decorative ADA Grab Bar, Chrome
Delta · 41842 · best for the long wall of a tub or shower
42 in., rated to 500 lb when properly installed, 1-1/4 in. diameter and 1-1/2 in. wall clearance.
The Delta 41842 is the one for the long wall. At 42 in. it gives a hand somewhere to go along the whole length of a bath.
Delta publishes the full geometry: a “1-1/4 in. diameter” bar on “3 in. diameter flanges” that “Extends 2-3/4 in. from wall” with “1-1/2 in. wall clearance”. It “Supports up to 500 lbs. when properly installed”, which Delta notes is “twice the ADA requirement”.
Mounting hardware and a grab bar wall anchor come in the box, and it is offered in six finishes, so it can match the faucet rather than look like a hospital fitting.

Why: Delta's 500 lb figure is conditional on proper installation. That means drilled, anchored and ideally into blocking — an owner's job.

What’s wrong with it
At 42 in., it needs a clear run of wall and several fixing points to hit solid structure.

The one to skip
12 in. Transitional Decorative ADA Grab Bar, Stainless
Delta · 41712-SS · best for nobody who needs to bear weight on it
Delta's own page says assist bars like this 'are not designed to support the total weight of an individual'.
This is the one to read carefully, because the listing sounds reassuring at first.
The Delta 41712-SS is sold as an ADA-compliant 12 in. grab bar, and the page says it assists individuals “weighing up to 500 pounds”. But the same page also says: “Assist Bars are not designed to support the total weight of an individual.”
A grab bar exists for the moment someone’s full weight goes onto it. A bar its maker says is not designed for that is the wrong product, however it is labeled. Choose one with an unqualified rating.

Questions people actually ask
how much weight can a grab bar hold
Moen publishes 500 lbs for its Home Care 16 inch bar, and Delta publishes 500 lbs for its 42 inch bar when properly installed. The ADA benchmark is 250 pounds of force on the bar, fasteners and supporting structure together.
what height should a grab bar be
ADA section 609.4 places grab bars 33 to 36 inches above the floor. That is written for accessible facilities and is a sensible reference at home; the right height is the one the person using it can reach and push on comfortably.
can you install a grab bar without studs
Moen's SecureMount is designed for installation with or without studs. We would still fix into studs or blocking wherever possible, because a grab bar's rating is only as strong as the wall behind it.
are suction grab bars safe
We do not recommend them. A grab bar has to hold a falling adult, which is far beyond any suction or adhesive rating we have seen.
