Where to put bathroom hardware: the published heights
Most placement advice is somebody's habit. Three of these fittings have published heights in the ADA Standards, and the rest come down to projection and door swing.

The three published heights
The ADA Standards are written for regulated spaces, not private homes, but they are the only published placement figures in this category, and they come from measuring how people actually reach:
- Toilet paper: “Toilet paper dispensers shall comply with 309.4 and shall be 7 inches (180 mm) minimum and 9 inches (230 mm) maximum in front of the water closet measured to the centerline of the dispenser. The outlet of the dispenser shall be 15 inches (380 mm) minimum and 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum above the finish floor and shall not be located behind grab bars.”
- Grab bars: horizontal, “33 inches (840 mm) minimum and 36 inches (915 mm) maximum above the finish floor measured to the top of the gripping surface”.
- Mirrors: bottom edge of the reflecting surface “40 inches (1015 mm) maximum above the finish floor” over a lavatory, and 35 in. maximum where there is no lavatory below.
The last clause on the paper holder is the one people break at home: it should not be behind a grab bar, because you cannot reach through one.
What has no published height at all
Towel bars, rings, hooks and shelves. No maker we cover publishes a mounting height for any of them, so the honest answer is that placement is decided by the towel and the room, not by a standard. Practical constraints that do come from published figures:
- Hang length. A bath towel is 57 in. long at ONSEN; folded over a bar it drops about 28 in. Mount the bar so the towel clears the floor, the toilet and any heat source.
- Projection. Delta publishes 4-17/32 in. for the Cassidy bar, 3-5/16 in. for the Trinsic and 3-7/8 in. for the robe hook. Anything in a walkway should be the shallowest option you can buy.
- Assembled width. 26-1/2 in. for a 24 in. bar. Measure the wall, not the bar. Sizing is covered here.
Order of operations
- Mark the fixed points first: the paper holder against the 7 to 9 in. rule, and any grab bar at 33 to 36 in.
- Then the mirror, with its bottom edge at or below 40 in.
- Then towel storage, in whatever wall is left, choosing the shallowest projection for anything near a door.
- Test the door swing before drilling. A door that clears a wall does not necessarily clear a 4-17/32 in. bar on that wall.
Grab bars are the exception to “anywhere you like”
Most bathroom hardware can go wherever it suits you. A grab bar cannot, because it is the one fitting whose position is load-bearing. Beyond the ADA’s 33 to 36 in. height, MedlinePlus adds the orientation rule for homes: bars “should be secured vertically or horizontally to the wall, not diagonally”, and “Do not use towel racks as grab bars. They can’t support your weight.”
That last sentence is why the two categories are kept apart on this site: Moen publishes 500 lb for its 8716 grab bar, and no towel bar maker publishes any load rating at all. The two are compared here.
Fixing, and what the wall can take
Every drilled fitting here ships with a template: Delta publishes “Mounting hardware and mounting template included with product” on both bars and the hook, and Moen publishes a “metal mounting post for extra security” on the Weymouth. Use the template; it is the maker’s own bracket spacing.
For anything adhesive, 3M’s published sequence is the whole job: clean with rubbing alcohol, press for 10 seconds, press the base 30 seconds, then “wait 1 hour before use” — and choose a spot not over grout lines. The adhesive method is covered here.
If you rent
Published heights matter just as much when nothing gets drilled: an adhesive holder at the wrong height is still at the wrong height, and moving it costs a set of strips. The no-drill paper holders are covered here.

What’s wrong with it
A drilled holder rates Owner-only, so a tenant needs the freestanding or adhesive route.
What we can’t tell you
Kohler publishes no weight capacity for the holder.

2. The fitting with a published height
Home Care 16 in. Concealed Screw Grab Bar, Stainless
Moen · 8716 · best for fitting a grab bar to the standard
Rated to 500 lb, to be installed horizontally 33 to 36 in. above the floor.
Moen’s 8716 publishes “supports up to 500 lbs.”, and the ADA publishes the position: “Grab bars shall be installed in a horizontal position, 33 inches (840 mm) minimum and 36 inches (915 mm) maximum above the finish floor measured to the top of the gripping surface”.

Why: A grab bar has to hold a falling adult. It is drilled and anchored, and we treat that as a job for an owner or a professional who knows what is behind the tile.
Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. Moen — Home Care 16 in. grab bar 8716 product page. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.
What’s wrong with it
It must be anchored into structure, which is drilling and, in a rental, permission.
What we can’t tell you
Moen publishes no wall clearance on the product page.

3. The fitting with a published load
Cassidy Double Robe Hook
Delta · 79735 · best for anywhere a towel needs to hang
A double robe hook rated at 20 lb that projects 3-7/8 in. from the wall.
Delta’s Cassidy double robe hook publishes a 20 lb load and “Extends 3-7/8 in. from wall”, measuring “4-5/8 in. H x 3-7/8 in. D x 2-1/2 in. W”.
Hooks have no published height because they have no published reach requirement. Put them where a hanging towel clears the floor and the radiator.

Questions people actually ask
how far should a toilet paper holder be from the toilet
The ADA Standards specify 7 inches minimum and 9 inches maximum in front of the water closet, measured to the centerline of the dispenser, with the outlet 15 to 48 inches above the floor and not behind a grab bar.
how high should a grab bar be
The ADA Standards require grab bars installed horizontally, 33 inches minimum and 36 inches maximum above the finish floor, measured to the top of the gripping surface.
how high should a towel bar be mounted
There is no published height for a towel bar. Mount it so a folded towel clears the floor and any heat source — a bath towel is 57 in. long at ONSEN, so it drops about 28 in. over a bar.
how far does bathroom hardware stick out from the wall
Published projections vary: Delta gives 4-17/32 in. for its Cassidy towel bar, 3-5/16 in. for the Trinsic bar and 3-7/8 in. for the Cassidy double robe hook. Moen does not publish projections for its Weymouth or Vale bars.
