What size towel bar do you need?

Towel bars are sold by bar length and installed by assembled width, and those are different numbers. Both are published, and both decide whether it fits.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A towel folded over a chrome towel bar

The short answer

A 24 in. bar is the default and takes one bath towel folded in half — a bath towel is about 31 in. wide at ONSEN. Measure the wall against the assembled width, not the bar: Delta’s 24 in. Cassidy assembles to 26-1/2 in. A hand towel needs far less; Command’s bath bar is 9 in.

Two numbers, not one

A towel bar is sold by its bar length — the 24 in. in the product name — and installed by its assembled width, which includes the posts at each end. Delta publishes both for the Cassidy: a 24 in. bar and a 26-1/2 in. assembled width. On the Trinsic it is 26-1/4 in. overall with 25 in. between brackets.

Measure the wall you have, subtract a couple of inches at each end for hands and door swing, and compare that with the assembled width.

Size it to the towel

Published towel widths are what a bar has to carry:

  • Bath towel: ONSEN publishes 31 x 57 in. Folded in half it is about 15-1/2 in. wide, which sits comfortably on a 24 in. bar with room to spare.
  • Bath sheet: 38 x 67 in. at ONSEN. Folded, that is 19 in. of towel — a 24 in. bar is the minimum, and 30 in. is better.
  • Hand towel: Parachute publishes 30 x 20 in. for its waffle hand towel. A 9 to 18 in. bar is enough.

A towel dries at the parts exposed to air, so the goal is to hang it as close to flat as the wall allows. Two folds on a short bar is how towels stay damp. Why that leads to musty towels is here.

Projection: the number for a narrow bathroom

Published projections differ more than you would expect for a piece of metal on a wall: Delta publishes “Extends 4-17/32 in. from wall” for the Cassidy and “Extends 3-5/16 in. from wall” for the Trinsic. Over a toilet, or beside a door, that 1-1/4 in. difference is what you walk into.

Moen does not publish a projection for either the Weymouth or the Vale 24 in. bars, which is worth knowing before you order one for a tight space.

How many bars, and where

One bar per person is the practical rule, because two towels on one bar overlap and neither dries. Where a wall cannot take a second bar, a hook or a ring is the alternative, and both change the drying math. Bar against hook is compared here, and bar against ring here.

What nobody publishes

Not one towel bar we cover publishes a weight capacity — not Delta, not Moen. The load ratings in this category belong to hooks and adhesive strips instead: Delta publishes 20 lb for its Cassidy double robe hook, Tooletries publishes “carry up to 4lbs” for its silicone shower hook, and 3M rates Command water-resistant strips at 3 and 5 lb.

So if you want a number to plan around, buy a hook. If you want a bar, buy the length and mount it properly. What adhesive hooks hold is covered here.

If you rent

A drilled bar rates Owner-only; the 9 in. Command bar rates Safe. If you need a bath towel’s worth of bar without drilling, the answer is usually an over-door rail or a freestanding stand rather than adhesive. The no-tools upgrades are ranked here.

1. The standard 24 in.

Cassidy 24 in. Towel Bar

Delta · 79724 · best for one bath towel on an open wall

A 24 in. brass bar that assembles to 26-1/2 in. and projects 4-17/32 in. from the wall.

Delta’s Cassidy publishes the two numbers that matter: a 24 in. bar with a 26-1/2 in. assembled width, and “Extends 4-17/32 in. from wall”. It is “Completely brass construction” with a “Lifetime Limited Warranty”.

That 2-1/2 in. difference between bar and assembly is what catches people measuring a wall between a door casing and a corner.

Renter verdict: Ask firstIt comes off cleanly, but it touches something a landlord may care about.

Why: Screwed into the wall with anchors or toggles. The holes can be filled, which makes it a question for the landlord rather than a flat no.

What’s wrong with it

It projects 4-17/32 in. into the room, the deepest bar we cover.

What we can’t tell you

Delta Trinsic 24 in. Towel Bar

2. The shallow 24 in.

Trinsic 24 in. Towel Bar

Delta · 759240 · best for a narrow room or a doorway wall

26-1/4 in. assembled with 25 in. between brackets, projecting only 3-5/16 in.

The Trinsic bar publishes “1-1/8 in. H x 3-5/16 in. D x 26-1/4 in. W” with 25 in. between mounting brackets, a 5/8 in. bar, and set screws taking a 3/32 in. Allen wrench.

Bracket spacing is the number to note if you are fixing into studs rather than anchors: 25 in. does not land on 16 in. centers, so at least one end is going into an anchor.

3. For a hand towel, with no drilling

Command Bath Hand Towel Bar

3M Command · BATH41-SN-ES · best for renters and small walls

A 9 in. adhesive bar sized for a hand towel, removable without tools.

Command’s bath towel bar is 9 in. — hand towel size, published as such — in a rust-resistant satin nickel, with no drilling and a published removal: slide the bar up off the base, then pull the tab straight down.

3M rates the water-resistant strips at 3 lb (medium) and 5 lb (large), which is the real constraint on an adhesive bar. The no-drill bars are ranked here.

Why: 3M publishes a stretch-release removal that comes away without taking paint or tile glaze with it. The only rule that matters is the one people ignore: press for 30 seconds and leave it a full hour before the first towel.
