How to stop towels smelling musty
It is almost never the washing machine, and it is almost never the detergent. It is that the towel is still wet when you use it again.

What the smell actually is
Damp cotton at room temperature is an excellent growth medium. Bacteria that arrived from your skin metabolize the residues left in the fibers, and some of what they produce is volatile and smells stale.
The critical point is that this needs time at moisture. A towel that dries in four hours never gets there. A towel that is still damp after twenty hours has been in the ideal condition for most of a day, every day.
Which is why the fix is not a stronger detergent. It is removing the hours of dampness.
The four causes, ranked by how often they are the real one
1. Fabric softener. The most common cause by a distance, and the least suspected. The film is hydrophobic, so the towel stops absorbing properly, water sits on the surface and in the residue instead of wicking into the fiber, and drying slows down. ONSEN publishes the instruction to avoid it. Most people read that as a purity preference. It is a performance instruction.
2. Folding on the rail. A towel doubled over a single bar has two faces pressed together with no airflow between them. Those faces are still wet at bedtime. Hanging the same towel open can halve the drying time and costs nothing.
3. Not enough towels. If the towel has to be reused before it has dried, every subsequent shower starts from a damp baseline. Two per person, alternated, is the cheapest structural fix available.
4. Too much towel. The heavy hotel-weight bath sheet that felt wonderful in the shop is a large mass of dense cotton in a small unventilated room. Published weight against published size tells you whether you have this problem — the towel picks work through the numbers.
Things people try that do not work
More detergent. Excess detergent does not rinse out fully and leaves residue that holds moisture and feeds the problem. If anything, use slightly less.
Scented detergent or in-wash fragrance beads. These mask the smell for a few days and add more deposit to the fibers. The towel gets worse, more slowly.
Washing more often. If the drying is the bottleneck, washing more just puts more wet towels in the same unventilated room.
Antibacterial sprays. Treating the symptom on a surface that will be recolonized within a day of the next shower.
The bathroom, not the laundry
If you have done the reset, stopped the softener, hung towels open and still have the problem, the room is the issue.
A bathroom that cannot shed moisture is also quietly damaging the property — paintwork, sealant, window frames. That makes a broken extractor fan a maintenance fault rather than an upgrade request, and it is usually the easiest thing a landlord will agree to fix. Framing that conversation is covered here.
Failing that, a heated rail is the workaround that needs nobody’s permission. At 90 W on a two-hour timer it costs about three cents a day at the US average residential rate, and the benefit most owners end up valuing is not warm towels — it is dry ones. The running-cost arithmetic is here.
The bath mat has the same problem, worse
Everything above applies doubly to the mat, which lies flat on a cold floor with no air underneath it and gets stood on wet twice a morning.
Hanging it after each shower is the free fix. The product-level fix is a stone mat, which evaporates rather than holding — the comparison is here.

3 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. The structural fix
ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Towel
ONSEN · Supima Waffle Bath Towel · best for replacing a towel that is simply too heavy for the room
16.5 oz across 31 x 57 in in an open waffle weave — less cotton to dry, and all of it exposed to air.
If the reset works and the smell comes back anyway, the towel is wrong for the room.
ONSEN’s waffle bath towel publishes “16.5 oz or 470 g” over “31 x 57 in”. There is less cotton to dry out, and the open lattice leaves almost all of it in contact with air rather than buried in a pile.
The same page publishes the care instruction that matters most here — no fabric softeners — which is the single most common cause of the problem you are trying to solve.

2. The airflow fix
WarmlyYours Ibiza Freestanding Towel Warmer
WarmlyYours · TWS5-IBZ06PP · best for a bathroom that will never ventilate properly
Six heated bars at 90 W, freestanding, cULus listed with a published 149°F cap — about three cents a day on a timer.
The real cause of musty towels is a room that cannot shed moisture. If the window is painted shut and the extractor fan has never worked, no towel will dry properly.
The WarmlyYours Ibiza attacks that directly. WarmlyYours publishes it as “Freestanding” with a NEMA 5-15 plug, six heated bars at 90 W, “304-stainless steel”, cULus listed with overheat protection capped at “149°F (65°C)”.
Six bars is the specification that matters, not the heat. It means each towel hangs open with air on both sides instead of folded double on one rail.

3. The wall-mounted version
WarmlyYours Palma Wall-Mounted Plug-In Towel Warmer
WarmlyYours · TWS2-PLM04PP · best for no floor space, and a landlord who says yes
60 W plug-in wall rail, cULus listed, four anchors and no electrician.
Where the floor is full, the wall is the alternative. The Palma is published as “Wall Mounted” and “Plug-in”, shipping with an “installation manual and hardware kit”.
At 60 W it is a gentle continuous heat rather than a fast dry, which is the correct approach for a towel — you want steady evaporation over hours, not a scorch.
It rates Owner-only because four anchors go into a wall, so it is a permission conversation. How to have that conversation is here.

Questions people actually ask
how to get the musty smell out of towels
Two separate hot cycles with no detergent: one with about a cup of white vinegar, then one with about half a cup of baking soda. Dry completely. Then stop using fabric softener, or the film goes straight back on and the smell returns.
why do my towels smell after one use
Because they were not dry when you used them. Damp cotton at room temperature is a growth medium, and the smell is what grows there. The cause is usually fabric softener residue, folding the towel on the rail, or not owning enough towels.
does vinegar ruin towels
Not in the quantities used for a reset wash. White vinegar is mildly acidic and dissolves detergent and softener residue. Do not combine it with baking soda in the same cycle — they neutralize each other and neither does its job.
should you use fabric softener on towels
No. ONSEN publishes the reason on its own care instructions: softeners and conditioners coat the cotton fibers and reduce their natural absorbency. Wool dryer balls give you softness without leaving a film.
