The best bath towels, ranked by how fast they dry

Shops sell towels on thickness. Thickness is a measure of how much water the towel keeps after you are done with it.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Towel

The short answer

Buy light. ONSEN publishes 16.5 oz over 31 x 57 in for its Supima waffle bath towel — deliberately light, open weave, dries between showers. The plusher a towel is, the longer it stays wet, and a towel that is still damp tomorrow is what a musty bathroom actually smells like.

Why weight is the number and softness is not

A towel does two things: it moves water off you, and then it gives that water up to the air. Shops sell the first job and ignore the second, which is why the display is arranged by thickness.

Both jobs are governed by the same thing — how much cotton is present and how much of it is exposed to air. More cotton absorbs more water and takes longer to release it. Less cotton in an open structure absorbs slightly less and releases it far faster.

For a hotel with a laundry, dense is correct. For a rented bathroom with one rail, a small window and two people showering in the morning, dense is how you end up with a towel that is never actually dry.

GSM is the industry number, and nobody here publishes it

Grams per square meter is how towels are specified in the trade. Roughly: 300–400 is a light, fast-drying towel; 400–600 is standard; 600 and up is the hotel-weight territory that feels magnificent and dries slowly.

Not one product on this page publishes a GSM figure. That is not an oversight peculiar to one brand — it is the norm in direct-to-consumer bath textiles, where the marketing runs on adjectives instead.

Published weight over published dimensions is the workaround, and it is why the waffle towel and the waffle bath sheet can be compared to each other while the plush towel cannot be compared to anything. If a maker publishes both numbers, you can do the arithmetic yourself. If they publish neither, that is information too.

Gauze towels publish even less — the format is specified by layer count rather than by weight, which is a different kind of number entirely. How gauze compares with terry is here.

The care instruction almost everyone gets wrong

ONSEN publishes it plainly: “Avoid using fabric softeners & conditioners; these coat the cotton fibers and minimize their natural absorbency.”

Fabric softener works by depositing a thin lubricating film on the fibers. On a shirt that is the point. On a towel it is directly counterproductive: the film is hydrophobic, so a softened towel pushes water around instead of drinking it, and it takes several hot washes to strip back out.

The published alternative is wool dryer balls, which separate the layers mechanically and let air through without leaving anything behind. Every ONSEN care instruction we found names them specifically.

How many towels you actually need

More than you think, and this is the cheapest fix for a musty bathroom that nobody suggests.

ONSEN’s published guidance is to wash “every 3-4 days”. If a towel takes most of a day to dry in your bathroom, then one towel per person cannot meet that schedule without being used damp. Two per person, alternated, gives each one a full day on the rail.

The other half of the problem is rail space. A towel folded in half on a narrow rail is effectively drying from one side only. If you can hang it flat and open, a heavy towel dries like a light one — a rail with several bars does more for drying time than upgrading the towel does.

Nothing here has an install step

Every product on this page rates Safe on our install rating in the most absolute sense available: there is nothing to install, nothing to reverse, and no landlord to ask. Towels are the one category on this site where the rating exists purely for consistency.

Which makes them the ideal first purchase in a bathroom you are stuck with. The rest of the no-tools list is here.

ONSEN ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Towel

1. Best overall

ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Towel

ONSEN · Supima Waffle Bath Towel · best for a bathroom with poor ventilation

16.5 oz across 31 x 57 in, 100% USA-grown Supima cotton in an open waffle weave — the only towel here that publishes a weight and a fiber.

The ONSEN Supima waffle bath towel is the pick because it publishes the two numbers that let you compare it to anything else: “31 x 57 in or 79 x 145 cm” and “16.5 oz or 470 g”.

Divide one by the other and you have a density figure you can carry into any shop. It is light for its size, and that is the design intent rather than a corner cut — an open waffle weave has more surface area exposed to air and less mass of wet cotton to dry out.

The fiber is published as “100% USA-grown extra-long-staple Supima® cotton”. Extra-long staple is the one fiber claim in this category with a real mechanical consequence: longer fibers mean fewer loose ends, which means less lint and less pilling over a few hundred washes.

It is “OEKO-TEX® certified”, and ONSEN publishes an unusually specific care routine — wash every three to four days, cold, gentle, tumble dry low with wool dryer balls, and “avoid using fabric softeners & conditioners” because they coat the fibers and reduce absorbency. That last instruction is the one most people are quietly getting wrong.

Renter verdict: SafeNothing is drilled and nothing is wired in. Fit it, and take it with you.

Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. ONSEN — Supima Waffle Bath Towel, published dimensions, weight, fiber and care. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.

What’s wrong with it

A waffle weave feels textured rather than plush. If what you want from a towel is the sensation of a hotel bath sheet, this is not it and no amount of washing will make it so.

What we can’t tell you

ONSEN publishes no GSM figure, so the weight-to-size sum above is our arithmetic on their numbers rather than a density they state.

ONSEN ONSEN Sculpted Terry Bath Towel

2. Best if you want terry

ONSEN Sculpted Terry Bath Towel

ONSEN · Sculpted Terry Bath Towel · best for plush feel without a towel that never dries

28 x 55 in of 100% USA-grown cotton in a short-loop sculpted terry, published as drying faster than traditional terry.

If the waffle texture is a deal-breaker, the Sculpted Terry is the compromise. It is terry — loops, plush, familiar — but with short loops that ONSEN publishes as drying faster than a conventional long-loop terry towel.

Published at “28 x 55 in or 71 x 140 cm” in “100% USA-grown cotton”, and “OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified”, with the same care routine as the waffle.

It is also slightly smaller than the waffle towel in both directions, which matters more than it sounds if you are tall or if you dry your hair in it.

Renter verdict: SafeNothing is drilled and nothing is wired in. Fit it, and take it with you.

Why: Nothing is fitted or fixed. The rating exists to be honest about the whole catalog, and for a towel the honest answer is that there is nothing to install.

Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. ONSEN — Sculpted Terry Bath Towels, published dimensions, fiber, certification and care. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.

What’s wrong with it

It is second choice on the one metric this page ranks on. Short-loop terry dries faster than long-loop terry and still not as fast as an open waffle.

What we can’t tell you

No published weight and no GSM, so there is no way to compare its density against the waffle towel numerically. The drying claim is ONSEN's, unquantified.

ONSEN ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Sheet

3. Best big towel

ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Sheet

ONSEN · Supima Waffle Bath Sheet · best for anyone who wants to be wrapped, not patted

22.2 oz across 38 x 67 in — bigger and heavier in absolute terms, and lighter per square inch than most standard towels.

The waffle bath sheet is the same fabric scaled up: “38 x 67 in” and “22.2 oz or 630 g”.

Run the sums and the point becomes clear. The bath towel is 16.5 oz over 1,767 square inches; the bath sheet is 22.2 oz over 2,546. That is about 0.0093 oz per square inch against 0.0087 — the sheet is very slightly lighter per unit area, not heavier.

You are buying more towel, not a denser one. Which is exactly the right way to get a big towel, because the usual way — a heavy long-loop bath sheet — produces something that takes two days to dry on a rail.

Renter verdict: SafeNothing is drilled and nothing is wired in. Fit it, and take it with you.

Why: A bath sheet asks nothing of the room. The only thing worth checking is whether your rail is wide enough to hang 38 inches of it.

Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. ONSEN — Supima Waffle Bath Sheet, published dimensions, weight, fiber and care. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.

What’s wrong with it

38 inches is a lot of towel to hang. On a standard 24-inch rail it will fold back on itself, which is the one thing guaranteed to stop any towel drying properly.

What we can’t tell you

No GSM published here either, and no published guidance on rail width.

The one to skip

ONSEN Plush Bath Towel

ONSEN · Plush Bath Towel · best for nobody, until the maker publishes more about it

40 x 65 in of Turkish Aegean cotton and almost nothing else — no weight, no GSM, no weave, no care instructions.

This is the skip, and it is the skip for a reason that has nothing to do with the towel being bad.

ONSEN publishes “40 x 65 in”, “100% Turkish-grown Aegean cotton” and “OEKO-TEX® certified against 350 toxic chemicals”. On the product page we could reach, that is the whole specification.

No weight. No GSM. No description of the pile or weave. Not even the care routine that appears on every other ONSEN product page. On a page that ranks towels by published weight, a towel with no published weight cannot be ranked.

It may well be an excellent towel. We have no way to tell you that, and the honest thing to do with a product we cannot evaluate is to say so rather than list it third and hope you do not notice.

Questions people actually ask

what is the best bath towel

For a bathroom that does not ventilate well, the lightest one that publishes its weight. ONSEN's Supima waffle bath towel publishes 16.5 oz across 31 x 57 in, which is deliberately light and dries between showers.

how often should you wash bath towels

ONSEN publishes every three to four days. That schedule only works if the towel dries fully in between, which in most rented bathrooms means owning two per person and alternating them.

are turkish cotton towels better

Turkish and Egyptian cotton are both long-staple fibers that resist pilling well, so the fiber claim is real. It tells you nothing about drying speed, which is decided by weave and weight, and those are the numbers most makers do not publish.

why do my towels not absorb water anymore

Almost always fabric softener. It leaves a water-repelling film on the fibers, which is why ONSEN publishes an instruction to avoid it. A few hot washes with no softener, or a wash with white vinegar, strips it back off.
