What GSM means on a towel, and what it does not

One number appears on nearly every towel listing and almost nobody explains it. Here is what GSM measures, with the published figures from the towels we cover.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

Shelves of folded towels in several colors and weights in a store

The short answer

GSM is grams per square meter: how much cotton is packed into a given area. Among the towels we cover the published figures run from 240 GSM for an open waffle weave to 750 GSM for a plush one, with bath mats at 900. Higher is denser and thirstier; it is also slower to dry.

What the number is

GSM stands for grams per square meter. Take a square meter of the towel, weigh it, and that is the figure. It is a density measurement, so it rises when a maker uses more cotton, longer loops, or a denser weave.

Because it is normalized to area, GSM lets you compare a hand towel with a bath sheet. A raw weight cannot do that: a bath sheet is heavier than a bath towel simply because it is bigger.

The published range, on this site

  • 240 GSM — Parachute waffle towels, open weave.
  • About 410 GSM — ONSEN Supima waffle bath towel, derived from its published 470 g over 79 x 145 cm.
  • 450 GSM — Parachute organic resort stripe towels, published as “450 grams per square meter”.
  • 550 GSM — Coyuchi Air Weight bath towel.
  • 750 GSM — Parachute organic plush towels.
  • 900 GSM — Coyuchi Air Weight bath mat, which is a floor product and built heavier on purpose.

That is a three-fold spread inside one small catalog, which is why the number is worth reading.

What a higher GSM actually changes

More cotton per square meter means more water held and more time to dry. Neither is automatically better, and the trade runs in both directions:

  • Heavier (550–750): more absorbent per wipe, warmer, more hotel-like. Slower to dry, heavier in a washing machine, and slower to come out of a dryer.
  • Lighter (240–450): dries faster, takes less space on a rail, better in a humid bathroom with poor ventilation. Feels thinner.

If your towels smell musty, weight is part of the cause: a dense towel that never fully dries is the ideal habitat for the bacteria that produce the smell. That fix is covered here.

Weave changes the answer more than GSM does

A 240 GSM waffle and a 240 GSM terry would not behave the same way. Waffle is an open structure that exposes more surface area to the air; terry is a loop pile that holds water in the loops. ONSEN describes its sculpted terry as “short loops, published as drying faster than traditional terry” — a structural claim, not a weight one. Waffle against terry is compared here.

Cotton gauze takes the structural argument further still: instead of loops, several fine flat layers are woven together, so the towel is specified by layer count rather than by weight. Viva Maison publishes “four layers of 100% Turkish cotton gauze” and no GSM at all. Terry against gauze is compared here.

Three things GSM cannot tell you

  1. Fiber quality. GSM counts grams, not staple length. ONSEN publishes “100% USA-grown extra-long-staple Supima® cotton”; a heavier towel in a shorter staple can still shed and pill.
  2. Dry time. No maker we cover publishes one, at any weight.
  3. Durability. Nobody publishes a wash-cycle rating for a towel. Care instructions are the closest thing, and they matter: Parachute’s plush towels say “Avoid bleach and fabric softeners”.

So what should you buy?

Pick the weight for the room, not the number for its own sake. A small bathroom with a slow fan wants 240–450 GSM and a rail with space around it. A large, well-ventilated bathroom can carry 550 GSM and up, and will feel more luxurious for it. The towels are ranked by drying speed here.

1. The light end: 240 GSM

Waffle Towels

Parachute · Waffle Towels · best for fast drying and small bathrooms

An open waffle weave at a published 240 GSM — the lightest towel we cover, and the quickest to dry.

Parachute’s waffle towels publish 240 GSM in “100% long-staple Turkish cotton” with an “open waffle weave”, at 56 x 30 in. for the bath towel.

A light towel holds less water, which is the point: less water in the cloth means less time hanging wet in a room that is already humid. Parachute publishes one care warning worth heeding: “Do not hang on a hook, as it can cause the wonderfully stretchy waffle weave to lose its shape”.

ONSEN ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Towel

2. The middle: about 410 GSM, derived

ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Towel

ONSEN · Supima Waffle Bath Towel · best for anyone who wants the arithmetic shown

ONSEN publishes weight and size rather than GSM — 470 g over 0.79 x 1.45 m works out near 410.

ONSEN’s Supima waffle bath towel does not publish a GSM figure. It publishes the two numbers GSM is made from: “16.5 oz or 470 g” and “31 x 57 in or 79 x 145 cm”.

0.79 m x 1.45 m is 1.15 square meters, and 470 g over 1.15 square meters is about 410 GSM. That is our arithmetic from ONSEN’s published figures, not a number ONSEN states — and it is the same sum any maker does before printing a GSM on a label.

Questions people actually ask

what is a good gsm for bath towels

There is no single right figure. Among the towels we cover, published weights run from 240 GSM for an open waffle to 750 GSM for a plush terry. Lighter dries faster and suits humid bathrooms; heavier absorbs more per wipe and feels more hotel-like.

is higher gsm always better in a towel

No. Higher GSM means more cotton per square meter, which means more absorbency but also more water held and a longer dry time. In a bathroom with weak ventilation, a heavy towel that never fully dries is the usual cause of musty smells.

How to stop towels smelling musty

how do you calculate gsm from a towel's weight

Divide the weight in grams by the area in square meters. ONSEN publishes 470 g for a towel measuring 79 x 145 cm, which is 1.15 square meters, giving about 410 GSM. That is our arithmetic from ONSEN's published figures.

what gsm is a bath mat

Heavier than a towel. Coyuchi publishes 900 GSM for its Air Weight bath mat against 550 GSM for the matching bath towel, because a mat is stood on rather than wrapped around you.
