The best organic cotton towels

Organic is the claim. The certificate number is the proof, and it is surprisingly rare to see one printed.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A stack of white cotton towels

The short answer

Buy the Parachute Organic Resort Stripe. It is the only towel here that publishes a GOTS certificate number, plus OEKO-TEX, full sizes and a quick-drying claim at 450 GSM. Want plush instead? The Organic Plush is 750 GSM — heavier and slower to dry.

How to check an organic claim

The word “organic” on a towel is a claim. What backs it is a certification, and the strongest form is a certificate number you can look up.

GOTS certifies organic fiber and its processing. Parachute publishes a GOTS certificate number on the Resort Stripe; Coyuchi publishes GOTS on the Air Weight.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests the finished towel for harmful substances. It is a good certification, but it is not an organic one. The Organic Plush publishes OEKO-TEX only.

Our shower curtain page covers the same distinction, because it applies to every organic textile in the bathroom.

GSM, and why heavier is not always better

GSM is grams per square meter — how much cotton is in the towel. It is the most useful single number on a towel, and until now the towels on this site did not publish it. These do.

Higher GSM (the Organic Plush at 750) is softer, heavier and more absorbent. It also holds more water and dries more slowly.

Middle GSM (the Resort Stripe at 450, the Air Weight at 550) balances softness against drying.

In a well-ventilated bathroom, buy on feel. In one that stays damp, lean lighter — a towel that dries between uses is a towel that does not smell. Our main towel page ranks on drying speed, and waffle versus terry is covered here.

The sizes, properly

Parachute publishes the same sizes on both of its towels: washcloth 12 x 12 in., hand towel 30 x 20, bath towel 56 x 30, bath sheet 70 x 40.

That bath sheet is worth noting. At 70 x 40 in. it needs a rail or warmer wide enough to hang it open. Folded over a narrow rail, it will not dry. Towel warmers sized for bath sheets are here.

Caring for organic cotton

Both makers publish similar care: wash cold with like colors, tumble dry low. Parachute specifically says to avoid bleach and fabric softener.

Fabric softener is worth avoiding on any towel. It coats the fibers, which is what makes a towel feel soft in the shop and absorb less at home.

And towels need nothing installed — every one here rates Safe on our install rating.

1. Best overall

Organic Resort Stripe Towels

Parachute · Organic Resort Stripe Towels · best for a certified organic towel that dries

A published GOTS certificate number, OEKO-TEX, 450 GSM, full sizes and a quick-drying claim.

The Parachute Organic Resort Stripe towels are the pick because they publish something almost no towel does: a certificate you can check.

Parachute states “GOTS Organic certified by CU 887265” alongside “OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100”. A certificate number is the difference between an organic claim and verifiable organic.

At “450 grams per square meter” they sit in the middle of the weight range, and Parachute publishes them as “exceptionally absorbent, quick-drying”, made with a sculpted rib and “Aerocotton Technology”. In a bathroom that does not ventilate well, drying speed matters more than plushness.

Sizes are published properly: washcloth 12 x 12 in., hand towel 30 x 20, bath towel 56 x 30, bath sheet 70 x 40. “Crafted in Turkey.”

What’s wrong with it

Yarn-dyed stripes rather than solid colors, which will not suit every bathroom.

What we can’t tell you

Parachute publishes no drying time to back the quick-drying claim.

Parachute Organic Plush Towels

2. Best plush

Organic Plush Towels

Parachute · Organic Plush Towels · best for maximum softness, in a bathroom that dries out

750 GSM of long-staple Turkish Aegean organic cotton, with every size published.

The Parachute Organic Plush towels are for anyone who wants the heaviest, softest towel here.

Parachute publishes 750 GSM — “our most plush towel” — in “100% organic long-staple Turkish Aegean cotton”, with full sizes: bath towel 56 x 30 in., bath sheet 70 x 40, hand towel 30 x 20.

The trade is drying. A 750 GSM towel holds far more water than a 450 GSM one and takes longer to dry, which in a damp bathroom is how towels start to smell. That problem is covered here.

One honest note: the product page publishes OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 but no GOTS certificate, so the organic claim is Parachute’s own rather than a certificate you can check here.

Coyuchi Air Weight Organic Towels

The one to skip

Air Weight Organic Towels

Coyuchi · Air Weight Organic Towels · best for anyone who can wait for a restock

The strongest certifications on this page — GOTS, Fair Trade and Made Safe — but sold out at the maker and without published sizes.

This is the hardest skip on the page, because on paper it is excellent.

Coyuchi publishes “GOTS + Fair Trade + Made Safe Certified” — three certifications covering organic fiber, labor and chemical safety — at 550 GSM, in a twill weave with a published claim of “drying off quickly and efficiently”.

Two things keep it off the recommended list. Every size and color still reads “Variant sold out or unavailable” on Coyuchi’s own store, so the only route in is a third-party listing of a single size. And Coyuchi names its sizes — bath towel, bath sheet — without publishing their dimensions, so you cannot check them against a rail or against the Parachute sizes.

If it comes back in stock and you care most about certification, it is well worth a look.

Questions people actually ask

what are the best organic cotton towels

The Parachute Organic Resort Stripe, on published evidence: a GOTS certificate number (CU 887265), OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, 450 GSM, full sizes and a quick-drying claim. For maximum plushness, the Parachute Organic Plush at 750 GSM.

how do i know if towels are really organic

Look for GOTS certification, ideally with a certificate number you can check. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is a harmful-substances test, not an organic certification — conventional cotton can hold it.

what gsm is best for bath towels

It depends on your bathroom. Higher GSM, like 750, is plusher but slower to dry. Middle weights around 450 to 550 balance softness and drying. In a damp bathroom, lighter towels are less likely to smell.

Towels ranked by drying speed

what size is a bath sheet

Parachute publishes its bath sheets at 70 x 40 inches, against 56 x 30 for a bath towel. You need a wide rail or warmer to hang one open so it dries.
