The best shower curtains
The largest piece of fabric in the bathroom, and the cheapest way to change how the whole room looks.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
Every one of these needs a liner
Start here, because it changes the purchase. A cotton shower curtain is decoration and a bit of splash control. It is not waterproof, and none of the makers here claims it is.
Behind it you want a liner that sits inside the tub and actually keeps water in. The fabric curtain hangs outside, where it stays drier and lasts longer. When you can skip a liner, and how to size one, is covered here.
What the certifications actually certify
“Organic” is a word anyone can print. The certification behind it is what you can check.
GOTS (the Global Organic Textile Standard) certifies organic fiber and how it is processed into fabric. It is the certificate that backs an organic claim. Coyuchi publishes it on both its curtains.
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests the finished product for a list of harmful substances. It is valuable, but it is a safety test, not an organic certification — a conventional cotton can hold it. Parachute publishes it on the Oasis.
Neither says anything about how well a curtain performs in a shower. They are about what the fabric is, not what it does.
Size, and why pre-shrunk matters
Standard shower curtains are 72 x 72 in., and three of the four here publish that size. The ONSEN is larger at 75.6 in. square.
Cotton shrinks, and a curtain that loses an inch or two in length no longer reaches the tub edge. Coyuchi publishes the waffle curtain as pre-shrunk, which removes most of that risk. The others do not say, so wash cold as published and do not over-dry.
Keeping a fabric curtain fresh
Let it dry spread out. Pull it fully across after a shower rather than bunching it at one end. A bunched curtain stays wet in the folds, and that is where mildew starts.
Wash it on a schedule. Every maker here publishes machine washing, cold and gentle.
Fix the room if it never dries. A curtain that will not dry between showers is usually telling you the bathroom does not ventilate. The same problem makes towels smell, and it is covered here.
The most renter-safe upgrade on the site
Every curtain here rates Safe on our install rating. It hangs from the rod you already have, takes two minutes, and changes how the whole bathroom looks. If the existing rod is the problem, a tension rod needs no drilling either.
Pair it with towels in a matching or complementary weave and the room reads as finished. The organic towel picks are here.
Every pick in full
3 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.
1. Best overall
Organic Waffle Shower Curtain
Coyuchi · Organic Waffle Shower Curtain · best for a certified organic curtain that holds its size
GOTS certified, 100% organic cotton grown and woven in Turkey, 72 x 72 in., and published as pre-shrunk.
The Coyuchi Organic Waffle Shower Curtain is the pick because it publishes the certification that actually means organic.
Coyuchi states “100% organic cotton grown and woven in Turkey” and GOTS certification. GOTS covers the fiber and the processing, which is the standard you want behind the word “organic”.
It is published as pre-shrunk, which matters more on a curtain than on almost anything else. A cotton curtain that shrinks in the first wash stops reaching the tub, and a curtain that stops reaching the tub stops doing its job.
Care is published plainly: cold wash, gentle cycle, tumble dry low and remove promptly. The waffle texture also hides creasing between washes.

2. Best hanging detail
Organic Oasis Shower Curtain
Parachute · Organic Oasis Shower Curtain · best for knowing exactly how it attaches
100% organic cotton with stitched buttonholes along the top hem — but OEKO-TEX, not GOTS, is the certificate published.
The Parachute Organic Oasis Shower Curtain publishes the practical details the others leave out.
It states “Stitched button holes along the top hem” — so you know it takes standard hooks or rings without grommets. It is 72 x 72 in., “Crafted in India”, and machine washable cold on a gentle cycle.
One honest note on the label. Parachute describes it as “100% organic cotton”, but the certificate it publishes on this page is “OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100”. That is a real and useful certification — it tests the finished fabric for harmful substances — but it does not certify organic fiber. No GOTS certificate appears on the product page.

3. Best for a damp bathroom
ONSEN Antimicrobial Gauze Shower Curtain
ONSEN · Antimicrobial Gauze Shower Curtain · best for a room that does not dry out quickly
4-ply cotton gauze with an antimicrobial finish and reinforced button loops, at a larger 75.6 x 75.6 in.
The ONSEN gauze shower curtain is the pick for a bathroom where things stay damp.
ONSEN publishes “100% 4-ply cotton gauze, treated with antimicrobial silver to help reduce odor and mildew buildup”, with reinforced button loops for hanging.
We quote the antimicrobial claim in full because the limit matters: ONSEN states the finish “helps protect the fabric from odor-causing bacteria” and “Does not protect users against bacteria or other disease”. It protects the curtain, not you.
Note the size. ONSEN publishes 75.6 x 75.6 in. — wider and longer than the standard 72 x 72, which helps coverage on a wide tub but may pool on a short one.

The one to skip
Mediterranean Organic Shower Curtain
Coyuchi · Mediterranean Organic Shower Curtain · best for a decorative curtain where the hem stays dry
A beautiful GOTS-certified curtain, currently out of stock, with tassels trimming the hem that sits in the splash zone.
The skip is partly availability and partly design.
The Mediterranean curtain publishes the same strong material story as its waffle sibling: 100% organic cotton grown and woven in Turkey, GOTS certified, 72 x 72 in., in a “lightweight, high/low weave”.
It was out of stock in both colorways at the time of writing, and we do not recommend what we cannot see in stock.
The design detail is the other reason. Coyuchi publishes “3″ hand-twisted tassels trim the bottom”. The bottom of a shower curtain is exactly where water collects, and tassels hold it — they will be the last part to dry every day. Lovely on a window; less so in a shower.

Questions people actually ask
what is the best shower curtain
For a fabric curtain, the Coyuchi Organic Waffle: 72 x 72 inches, 100% organic cotton, GOTS certified and published as pre-shrunk. Any fabric curtain needs a liner behind it, because cotton is not waterproof.
do cotton shower curtains need a liner
Yes, in almost every shower. A cotton curtain is decoration and light splash control, not a waterproof barrier, and none of the makers here claims otherwise. The liner hangs inside the tub; the fabric hangs outside.
what is the difference between gots and oeko-tex
GOTS certifies organic fiber and how it is processed — it is what backs an organic claim. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests the finished fabric for harmful substances; it is a safety test, and conventional cotton can hold it.
what size is a standard shower curtain
72 x 72 inches. Three of the four curtains here publish that size; the ONSEN gauze curtain is larger at 75.6 inches square, which suits a wide tub but may pool on a short one.
