The best shower curtain liners

Nobody shops for a liner twice if the first one works. The trouble is that most of them publish almost nothing, so here is what is actually on the label.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A clear shower curtain liner in a bathtub

The short answer

Buy the Parachute Shower Curtain Liner if you want one you can wash: it is published as completely waterproof, mildew resistant and machine washable. If you would rather buy a plastic liner and replace it, Zenna’s 12-gauge Industrial is the thickest it lists, and its 8-gauge PEVA comes in a stall size.

What the liner is actually for

The liner is the waterproof layer that hangs inside the tub. The curtain outside it is decoration. Whether you need both is covered here, and the short version is that only a curtain published as waterproof works on its own.

Gauge is the number to compare

Plastic liners are sold by gauge, and Zenna publishes it plainly across its range: 2.4, 3, 5, 8, 10 and 12, with the 10 and 12 gauge models labeled “Heavyweight”. iDesign’s vinyl liner publishes “10-gauge” with “12 reinforced rustproof metal grommets”.

Nobody publishes a test behind the number, so treat gauge as what it is: the maker’s own thickness scale, useful for comparing liners within a brand.

PEVA, vinyl or fabric

Vinyl and PEVA are the wipe-clean plastics. Zenna lists them as separate ranges; iDesign calls its vinyl “non-toxic PVC vinyl” and asks you to “Clean with a damp cloth, and for best results, open fully after each use to air dry”.

Polyester is the fabric option, and it is the one that goes in the machine. Parachute publishes both the waterproof claim and the washing instruction, which is the combination that matters.

Mildew: what is published and what works

One model here carries a published mildew label. That is worth knowing, and it is not the main event. Mildew grows where water sits, so the fix is mechanical: draw the liner flat across the rod after every shower instead of bunching it at one end, and wash or replace it before it stains.

If the whole room stays damp, the liner is just the first surface to show it. Ventilation is the underlying fix.

Sizes

72 x 72 in. is the standard, and it is what Parachute and iDesign publish. A stall shower needs something narrower, and Zenna is the only maker here publishing a stall option — on the Softy and the 8-gauge PEVA. Measure the rod before you order either.

If you rent

Every liner here rates Safe on our install rating. A liner hangs on the rings that are already there, and it leaves with you or goes in the trash.

Parachute Shower Curtain Liner

1. Best overall

Shower Curtain Liner

Parachute · Shower Curtain Liner · best for anyone who would rather wash a liner than replace it

100% polyester, published as completely waterproof and mildew resistant, and machine washable.

Parachute’s Shower Curtain Liner is the one liner here that answers the question that actually decides the category: can you wash it? Parachute publishes “Machine washable”, alongside “100% polyester”, “completely waterproof” and “mildew resistant”.

It is 72 x 72 in., “semi-opaque”, and made in Turkey. A liner you can put through a cool cycle with a couple of towels is a liner that does not get thrown away when the bottom hem goes dark, which is how most liners die.

2. Best heavyweight

Industrial 12-Gauge Heavyweight Shower Liner, Frosty

Zenna Home · 72910 · best for a liner that hangs straight and stays put

The thickest gauge Zenna lists: “Industrial 12-Gauge Heavyweight”, in frosty vinyl.

Gauge is the one figure plastic liners publish, and Zenna’s Industrial 12-Gauge Heavyweight is the top of its range. Zenna lists it under vinyl liners, in a “Frosty” finish.

A thicker liner hangs with more weight in it, which is the practical reason people buy up the gauge scale. Zenna does not publish a size, a care instruction or a mildew claim for this model, and we are not going to fill those in.

3. Best for a stall shower

8-Gauge PEVA Shower Liner, Clear

Zenna Home · 71156 · best for a narrow stall rather than a tub

8-gauge PEVA, published in “Regular or Stall Sizes” and in one- or two-packs.

Stall showers are the size most liners ignore. Zenna’s 8-Gauge PEVA liner is published in “Regular or Stall Sizes”, which is the reason it is here, and in “1- and 2-Pack” quantities.

PEVA is listed by Zenna as a separate range from its vinyl liners. Zenna does not publish a PVC statement for either range, so we will not make one for it.

Zenna Home Softy PEVA Shower Liner, Mildew-Resistant

4. Best published mildew claim

Softy PEVA Shower Liner, Mildew-Resistant

Zenna Home · 71160 · best for bathrooms where the liner is the first thing to go moldy

The one liner Zenna labels “Mildew-Resistant”, in stall or regular sizes.

Search results for liners are full of mold promises. In Zenna’s own listing, exactly one model carries the claim: the Softy PEVA liner, named “Mildew-Resistant” and sold in “Stall or Regular Sizes”.

What Zenna does not publish is the treatment behind the claim or any test for it. Take the label at face value and keep doing the thing that actually works: pull the liner flat after every shower so it dries.

The one to skip

2.4-Gauge PEVA Shower Liner

Zenna Home · 71145 · best for a guest bathroom nobody showers in

At 2.4 gauge it is the thinnest liner Zenna lists, and it publishes nothing else.

Zenna is refreshingly clear about gauge, and that clarity is what rules this one out.

The 2.4-Gauge PEVA liner sits at the bottom of a range that goes up to 12. Zenna publishes no size, no mildew claim and no care note for it, so gauge is the only thing you can compare, and on gauge it loses to everything else here.

A very thin liner clings, blows inward and creases, and the creases are where water sits. Buy up the scale, or buy the washable polyester one.

Questions people actually ask

what gauge shower curtain liner is best

Higher gauge means a thicker liner, and thicker liners hang straighter. Zenna publishes 2.4 to 12 gauge and labels its 10 and 12 gauge liners heavyweight; iDesign publishes 10-gauge. No maker publishes a test behind the number.

what is the best shower liner for mold

Of the liners we could source, only Zenna's Softy PEVA carries a published mildew-resistant label, and Parachute publishes its polyester liner as mildew resistant and machine washable. Drawing the liner flat so it dries matters more than the label.

what size shower liner do i need for a stall shower

Narrower than the standard 72 x 72 inches. Zenna publishes stall sizes for its Softy PEVA and 8-gauge PEVA liners, but no dimensions, so measure your rod and check the listing size.

can you wash a shower curtain liner

Some. Parachute publishes its polyester liner as machine washable; iDesign publishes damp-cloth care for its vinyl liner and no washing instruction. Zenna publishes no care instructions for the liners in its listing.
