The best shower curtain material

Material decides three things: whether it keeps water in, whether you can wash it, and how the bathroom looks. Only one of those is on most labels.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A cotton shower curtain beside a bathtub

The short answer

For the curtain you see, cotton looks best and always needs a waterproof layer behind it. For that layer, polyester is the one you can machine wash, and PEVA or vinyl are the wipe-clean plastics sold by gauge. If a curtain does not publish a waterproof claim, assume it is not.

The one question that decides it

Does the maker publish a waterproof claim? If yes, the curtain can hang alone. If no — and cotton, linen and gauze curtains never do — you need a liner behind it, and the material question splits in two: what the curtain is made of, and what the liner is made of.

Cotton and linen: looks, not water

Woven cotton drapes, softens sound and makes a tiled room feel finished. It also lets water through, holds damp for hours and has to be washed on a schedule. Every cotton curtain here publishes a cold, gentle wash.

Polyester: the washable waterproof

Polyester is the compromise most people should buy: waterproof enough to hang inside the tub, and machine washable so it can be cleaned rather than replaced. It is usually semi-opaque, which is the trade-off against clear plastic.

PEVA and vinyl: cheap, clear, wipe-clean

Plastic liners are the default because they are inexpensive and see-through. They are sold by gauge — Zenna publishes 2.4 to 12 across its range, iDesign publishes 10 — and cared for with a cloth rather than a machine. The liners we would buy are here.

Zenna lists PEVA and vinyl as separate ranges and publishes no PVC statement for either, so if PVC content matters to you, that is a question to put to the seller rather than something we can answer from the label.

Certifications, and what they cover

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 (Parachute, ONSEN) is a test for harmful substances in the finished fabric. GOTS (Coyuchi) certifies the cotton as organic. Neither is a waterproofing or mildew claim, and neither applies to a plastic liner. How the two standards differ is covered here.

What it costs to own

A cotton curtain plus a washable polyester liner is two purchases that both last as long as you keep washing them. A plastic liner is one cheap purchase you repeat. Neither is wrong; they are different habits, and the material you choose is really a choice about which habit you have.

If you rent

Curtains and liners are the most renter-safe things in a bathroom: they hang on the rings that are already there and rate Safe on our install rating.

1. Best cotton

Organic Oasis Shower Curtain

Parachute · Organic Oasis Shower Curtain · best for a bathroom that should not look like a bathroom

72 x 72 in. of 100% organic cotton with stitched button holes, OEKO-TEX certified.

Parachute’s Organic Oasis curtain is “100% organic cotton”, hung by “Stitched button holes along the top hem”, and washed “cold on gentle cycle”.

Cotton drapes and softens a hard room, and it is not waterproof. Parachute does not claim it is, which is the honest version of this product.

2. Best organic

Organic Waffle Shower Curtain

Coyuchi · Organic Waffle Shower Curtain · best for gots-certified cotton in a textured weave

GOTS-certified organic cotton in a pre-shrunk waffle weave, 72 x 72 in.

Coyuchi’s Organic Waffle curtain is “100% organic cotton grown and woven in Turkey”, GOTS certified, and published as “pre-shrunk” — which matters on a curtain that gets washed and has to keep reaching the tub.

3. Best for a damp bathroom

ONSEN Antimicrobial Gauze Shower Curtain

ONSEN · Antimicrobial Gauze Shower Curtain · best for a room that never quite dries out

Four-ply cotton gauze with a silver antimicrobial finish — and the full disclaimer published.

ONSEN’s gauze curtain is “100% 4-ply cotton gauze, treated with antimicrobial silver to help reduce odor and mildew buildup”, at 75.6 in. square.

ONSEN also publishes the limit of that claim: “Antimicrobial finish helps protect the fabric from odor-causing bacteria. Does not protect users against bacteria or other disease organisms.” A maker that prints the second sentence is telling you more, not less.

Parachute Shower Curtain Liner

4. Best waterproof layer

Shower Curtain Liner

Parachute · Shower Curtain Liner · best for the liner you wash instead of replacing

100% polyester, published as completely waterproof, mildew resistant and machine washable.

Polyester is the material that does both jobs: waterproof and washable. Parachute’s liner publishes “completely waterproof”, “mildew resistant” and “Machine washable” in one place, which no plastic liner here can match.

iDesign Vinyl Shower Liner, Clear

5. Best clear liner

Vinyl Shower Liner, Clear

iDesign · 12030 · best for keeping the light in a windowless shower

10-gauge clear vinyl with 12 rustproof metal grommets, wiped clean rather than washed.

The iDesign 12030 is “non-toxic PVC vinyl” at “10-gauge”, 72 in. square, with “12 reinforced rustproof metal grommets”.

Clear plastic is the cheapest way to stop a small shower feeling like a cupboard. The trade is care: iDesign publishes a damp cloth and airing, not a wash cycle. For PEVA at a published gauge, Zenna’s 8-gauge liner is the stall-size alternative.

Questions people actually ask

what is the best material for a shower curtain

For the outer curtain, cotton looks best but is never waterproof. For the waterproof layer, polyester is the one you can machine wash; PEVA and vinyl are cheaper, clear and wipe-clean.

is polyester or peva better for a shower liner

Polyester can go in the washing machine, which PEVA generally cannot. PEVA is cheaper, comes clear and is sold by gauge — Zenna publishes 2.4 to 12 gauge across its liner range.

do cotton shower curtains need a liner

Yes. None of the cotton curtains we cover publishes a waterproof claim, and water passes through the weave and runs onto the floor.

Do you need a liner?

what does oeko-tex mean on a shower curtain

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is a test for harmful substances in the finished fabric. It is not a waterproofing or antimicrobial claim, and GOTS is the separate standard that certifies cotton as organic.
