Shower curtain vs shower door
One is a textile you can wash, swap and take with you. The other is a fixture that will outlast most of the bathroom. Both keep water in; the rest is trade-offs.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
What each one actually is
A curtain is usually two layers on the rod you already have: a waterproof liner hanging inside the tub, and a fabric curtain outside it. Both come down in seconds and both can be replaced for the price of a textile.
A glass door is a fixture. Wall jambs are fixed to the walls, a track sits on the tub or shower ledge, and heavy tempered panels slide on rollers. The Levity bypass here weighs 81.72 lb; the Cursiva, 142 lb.
Keeping water in
Both work when they are fitted properly, and both fail when they are not. A curtain setup relies on the liner hanging inside the tub and being drawn fully closed. A door relies on its jambs and track sitting on flat surfaces: Kohler’s Levity sheet lists minimum flat widths of 2-1/2 in. on the ledge and 3-1/2 in. on the wall.
Cleaning
The curtain route is laundry. Parachute publishes its liner and its cotton curtain as machine washable; iDesign’s vinyl liner wipes clean. The usual failure is mildew along the bottom of the liner, and the fix is to pull it flat after every shower.
Glass is wiping and squeegeeing. Kohler’s CleanCoat+ coating, published on both doors here, is designed to shed water and soap scum, which cuts the job down but does not remove it. The tracks and jambs need attention too.
Getting in and out
A curtain pulls aside to leave the whole opening clear. A sliding door gives up roughly half of it, because one panel always sits behind the other: the Cursiva’s walk-through is 21-13/16 to 25 in. on a 56-1/8 to 59-7/8 in. opening, and the Levity bypass is 18-1/16 to 21-1/16 in.
That matters if you bathe small children, or if anyone in the home needs room and a grab bar to step over a tub wall.
Weight, fixing and fit
A door is not a one-person carry, and its sheet has fit rules. The Cursiva is “Not for use with cast iron shower bases”. The Levity bypass warns its narrow jambs may not cover the holes an old door leaves. Every door is sold for a width range, not a single size, so measure first. The sliding doors we would buy are here.
Changing your mind
This is the curtain’s biggest advantage. A new color, a new pattern or a fresh liner takes a few minutes and nothing else in the bathroom changes. A door is chosen once. If the look matters to you more than the fixture, that alone may decide it.
Which to choose
A curtain if you rent, bathe children in the tub, want the full opening, or like to change the room. A door if you own, shower rather than bathe, and want a clean glass look with a long warranty. If you are replacing an old door, check Kohler’s jamb note before you order.
If you rent
The curtain, the liner and the vinyl liner all rate Safe on our install rating. Both glass doors are Owner-only: they are fixed to the walls and ledge. What you can change in a rental bathroom is here.
Every pick in full
5 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.
1. The door to buy
Cursiva Sliding Shower Door, 5/16 in. Crystal Clear Glass
Kohler · K-R707624-8L · best for owners with a 56 to 60 in. opening
Heavy 5/16 in. frameless glass on exposed stainless rollers, with Kohler's Controlled Close soft-close.
The Kohler Cursiva sliding door is the glass option we would choose. Kohler publishes “Frameless, heavy 5/16″ (8 mm) thick Crystal Clear tempered glass” on “Premium, exposed stainless steel roller design”, and a “Controlled Close® innovative soft-close with double-dampening technology” so the panel does not bang at the end of its travel.
It fits openings of 56-1/8 to 59-7/8 in. and stands 78 in. tall. It also weighs 142 lb, which is the other half of the story.

Why: A 142 lb frameless glass door mounted to the walls and base. Not a tenant's change, and not a one-person job.

What’s wrong with it

2. The door for a narrower opening
Levity Bypass Shower Door, 1/4 in. Crystal Clear Glass
Kohler · K-706008-L · best for openings of about 45 to 48 in.
1/4 in. frameless glass for 44-11/16 to 47-5/8 in. openings, at 81.72 lb.
The Kohler Levity bypass door covers the narrower stall showers the 60 in. doors do not. Its glass is 1/4 in. thick, its CleanCoat+ coating “creates a hydrophobic barrier that repels water, soap scum, and residue”, and it comes in six finishes.
Kohler is candid about one thing that matters if a door is already there: “the narrow wall jamb design of this door may not cover the existing shower door holes”. Plan to fill and finish those.

3. The liner behind a curtain
Shower Curtain Liner
Parachute · Shower Curtain Liner · best for any fabric curtain
100% polyester, published as completely waterproof and mildew resistant, and machine washable.
A fabric curtain needs a waterproof layer behind it, and Parachute’s liner is the one we would hang. It is “100% polyester”, “completely waterproof”, “mildew resistant” and “Machine washable”, in the standard 72 x 72 in.
That last point is the reason to prefer it: a liner you can wash is a liner you do not have to throw away when the hem goes dark. What a liner is actually for is here.

4. The curtain in front
Organic Oasis Shower Curtain
Parachute · Organic Oasis Shower Curtain · best for a washable look you can change
72 x 72 in. of 100% organic cotton with stitched button holes, OEKO-TEX certified.
Parachute’s Organic Oasis curtain is the outer layer: “100% organic cotton” with “Stitched button holes along the top hem”, and care as simple as “Machine wash cold on gentle cycle. Tumble dry low.”
It is our best hanging detail on the shower curtain page, and together with the liner above it makes a complete, washable setup.

5. The vinyl option
Vinyl Shower Liner, Clear
iDesign · 12030 · best for a clear liner you wipe down
10-gauge PVC vinyl with 12 rustproof metal grommets, cleaned with a damp cloth.
The iDesign 12030 vinyl liner is the wipe-clean route: “non-toxic PVC vinyl”, “10-gauge”, with “12 reinforced rustproof metal grommets”.
iDesign’s care advice doubles as mildew advice: “Clean with a damp cloth, and for best results, open fully after each use to air dry”.

Questions people actually ask
is a shower curtain or shower door better
It depends on whether you own and what you use the tub for. A curtain hangs on the existing rod, washes, and leaves the whole opening clear. A glass door is a fixed fixture with a long warranty; Kohler's frameless doors carry a ten-year limited warranty.
do shower doors keep water in better than curtains
Both keep water in when fitted properly. A curtain needs a waterproof liner hanging inside the tub and drawn fully closed; a door needs its jambs and track on flat surfaces, which Kohler specifies on its sheets.
can renters install a shower door
Not without the owner's agreement. A glass door is fixed to the walls and ledge, and Kohler notes its Levity jambs may not cover the holes from an old door. A curtain and liner are the renter's route.
is a fabric shower curtain waterproof
Usually not. Cotton curtains need a waterproof liner behind them. Parachute publishes its polyester liner as completely waterproof and mildew resistant.
