Framed vs frameless shower doors

One maker, three sliding doors, and the word “frameless” on all three spec sheets. The label is a styling claim; the numbers underneath it are the specification.

The short answer

In the trade, framed means metal around every edge of the glass and frameless means none. On the spec sheets you will actually be reading, that line has largely dissolved: Kohler publishes the word “Frameless” on doors with a top track, a low bottom track and wall jambs. Buy on the four numbers instead — glass thickness, weight, walk-through and minimum flat.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

Levity Plus Frameless Sliding Shower Door, 5/16 in. Crystal Clear Glass

Sold as frameless, and its spec sheet carries a Frame row: “Anodized aluminum prevents rust and corrosion”.

Anyone who wants the point of this page in a single lineOwner-only

What the two words are supposed to mean

The traditional definitions are simple enough. A framed door carries a metal channel around all four edges of each glass panel; the metal does the structural work, so the glass can be thin. A frameless door has no metal on the glass edges at all; the glass is the structure, so it has to be thick — and it hangs from hinges or rollers fixed to the wall. Semi-frameless is the middle: metal on some edges, usually the sliding rails, none on the opening edge.

Those are real distinctions, and they used to map onto what you could buy. They no longer map onto what you will read.

What the spec sheets actually say

All three doors on this page are from one maker, and Kohler prints the word “Frameless” on every one of them:

  • The Revel, which retailers sell “with Bright Polished Silver frame”, is “Frameless, heavy 5/16″ (8 mm) thick Crystal Clear tempered glass” with a “Frameless design with minimal metal”.
  • The Levity Bypass is “Frameless, 1/4″ (6 mm) thick” — same word, thinner glass, 81.72 lb against the Revel’s 141.
  • The Levity Plus is “Frameless, heavy 5/16″” and has a row on the same sheet headed Frame.

Nobody is lying. “Frameless” here is a statement about the glass panels, and a styling promise about how much metal you will see. It is not a statement about whether the door has a frame, because all three of these have tracks and jambs.

The four numbers that do differ

Stop reading the adjective and read these instead. Every one of them is published, and every one of them decides something you will live with.

  1. Glass thickness. 1/4 in. (6 mm) or 5/16 in. (8 mm) on these three; Kohler sells 3/8 in. elsewhere in the Levity range. Thicker glass looks and sounds more solid and flexes less.
  2. Weight. 81.72 lb against 141 lb is the real story of this page, and it is what “frameless” is standing in for when people say a frameless door feels better.
  3. Walk-through. The gap you step through, which is always much narrower than the opening. 18-1/16 in. at worst here, 28-3/4 in. at best.
  4. Minimum flat. How much flat, plumb surface the jambs need. The Revel asks 2-1/2 in. on both ledge and wall; the Levity Bypass asks 3-1/2 in. on the wall. A tiled niche or a bullnose edge can fail this.

Weight is the install story

A 141 lb door is not a harder style choice than an 81 lb one, it is a different job. It is more glass to hold square while someone else drives anchors, more load on the fixings, and more consequence if the wall is not plumb. Both of these doors publish out-of-plumb adjustability, which tells you the makers expect walls not to be plumb.

It also sets the ceiling on the room. Kohler wants a 78-1/2 in. vertical opening for the Revel just to get the top track over the jambs — a figure that has nothing to do with framing and everything to do with whether the door will physically go in. We measure every door we rank against the opening first.

Why you see “semi-frameless” everywhere

Search this category and most of what comes back is unbranded, in the $250 to $350 band, and described as semi-frameless. That word is doing the same job as the other two: signalling how much metal is visible, not describing a construction standard. There is no third-party certification behind any of the three terms.

What there is a standard for is the glass breaking safely. All three doors here cite ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201, the safety-glazing standards. If a listing does not name those, that absence tells you more than the word framed or frameless ever will.

Cleaning, which is the usual reason people choose

The honest version: fewer metal edges means fewer places for water to sit, which is a real advantage, and it is why Kohler ties its “minimal metal” line to “greater ease of cleaning”. It is not the main event. Spots on the glass come from minerals left when water dries, and that happens on any thickness, framed or not. How to stop them is here, and all three of these doors ship with Kohler’s CleanCoat+ coating, which delays the problem rather than removing it.

Which to choose

Measure first, then pick. If your vertical opening is under 78-1/2 in., the Revel is out whatever you think of the look. If your shower wall has less than 3-1/2 in. of flat, the Levity Bypass is out.

With both in play, the 5/16 in. doors are worth the money for the weight and the feel, and the Revel gives the widest walk-through. Take the 1/4 in. Levity Bypass when the opening is narrow, when you are fitting it yourself, or when you would rather not hang 141 lb of glass on an older wall. Do not pay a premium for the word on the box.

If you rent

None of this is yours to change. Every door here rates Owner-only on our install rating: drilled into the wall and the ledge, not reversible, and in the Revel’s case 141 lb of glass. How the rating works is here.

The renter’s version of this decision is a curtain and the rod that holds it, which costs a fortieth as much and comes down in a minute. Curtain against door is compared here, and the rods are ranked here.

What we have not done

We have not fitted any of these doors, weighed one, or measured a walk-through. Every figure above is published by Kohler on the specification sheet for that model and cited at the foot of the page, and where a figure is missing — no weight for the Levity Plus, no installation time for any of them — this page says so rather than estimating. The argument about what “frameless” means is a reading of those sheets side by side, and the quotations are there so you can check it. Prices are read live and shown with the date they were checked.

Kohler Revel Bypass Shower Door, 5/16 in. Crystal Clear Glass

1. Best frameless-style door

Revel Bypass Shower Door, 5/16 in. Crystal Clear Glass

Kohler · K-707206-L · best for a 55-5/8 to 59-5/8 in. opening with the height to take a 76 in. door

5/16 in. glass, 141 lb, a 24-3/4 to 28-3/4 in. walk-through and 2-1/2 in. of flat needed on both the ledge and the wall.

Retailers list Kohler’s Revel as a door “with Bright Polished Silver frame”. Kohler’s own specification sheet for the same model describes the material as “Frameless, heavy 5/16″ (8 mm) thick Crystal Clear tempered glass” and the technology as “Frameless design with minimal metal allows for greater ease of cleaning”.

Minimal metal, not no metal. Read the drawing on page three and the door has a top track, a low bottom track and wall jambs, which is why Kohler also warns that “the vertical opening should be a minimum of 78-1/2″ (1994 mm) to allow clearance for installing the top track over the wall jambs”.

Take the numbers rather than the adjective and it is a good door: the heavier 5/16 in. glass, a 141 lbs assembly, the widest walk-through of the three here, CleanCoat+ on the glass and Kohler’s ten-year door warranty.

Why: A 141 lb glass door screwed to the wall and the ledge, with a vertical opening requirement of 78-1/2 in. before the top track will even go over the jambs. Nothing about it is reversible.

What’s wrong with it

At 141 lb it is nearly twice the weight of the 1/4 in. door below, and it needs a 78-1/2 in. vertical opening before the top track will go on — in a short bathroom that rules it out before style does.

What we can’t tell you

Kohler publishes no installation time and no fitter requirement, so whether this is a two-person lift in practice is not stated anywhere on the sheet.

Kohler Levity Bypass Shower Door, 1/4 in. Crystal Clear Glass

2. Lightest, and the thinner glass

Levity Bypass Shower Door, 1/4 in. Crystal Clear Glass

Kohler · K-706008-L · best for a narrow opening, or a wall you would rather not hang 141 lb on

The same “frameless” word on 1/4 in. glass and 81.72 lb — a different product class wearing the same label.

The Levity Bypass is where the label stops being useful. Kohler calls its glass “Frameless, 1/4″ (6 mm) thick Crystal Clear tempered glass” — the same first word as the Revel, on glass a sixteenth of an inch thinner and an assembly that weighs 81.72 lb instead of 141.

That weight gap is the single most practical difference on this page. It changes what the wall has to carry, whether you can lift the panel alone, and how much the door resists being knocked out of true over time.

It is also the narrow option: a 44-11/16 to 47-5/8 in. opening and an 18-1/16 to 21-1/16 in. walk-through, against 24-3/4 in. at the Revel’s narrowest. Kohler asks for 3-1/2 in. of flat on the shower wall here, an inch more than the Revel wants.

3. The one with a published frame

Levity Plus Frameless Sliding Shower Door, 5/16 in. Crystal Clear Glass

Kohler · K-702424-L · best for anyone who wants the point of this page in a single line

Sold as frameless, and its spec sheet carries a Frame row: “Anodized aluminum prevents rust and corrosion”.

The Levity Plus settles the argument on its own. Kohler describes the glass as “Frameless, heavy 5/16″”, and the same sheet carries a line headed Frame: “Anodized aluminum prevents rust and corrosion”, with “smooth, easy-to-clean wall jambs”.

Both statements are true at once, and neither is dishonest. The glass panels have no metal bonded around their edges, and the assembly has an aluminum frame. “Frameless” is describing the glass, not the door.

On the figures it sits between the other two: the heavier 5/16 in. glass like the Revel, a 24-9/16 to 27-9/16 in. walk-through, interior and exterior towel bars, and the same ten-year warranty. Kohler does not publish a weight for it.

Questions people actually ask

what is the difference between framed and frameless shower doors

Traditionally, framed doors have metal around every edge of the glass and frameless doors have none, so frameless glass must be thicker to carry itself. On current spec sheets the line has blurred: Kohler describes doors with a top track, a bottom track and wall jambs as frameless, because the word is describing the glass panels rather than the assembly.

are frameless shower doors worth the extra money

Pay for the glass thickness and the weight, not the label. The 5/16 in. doors here weigh 141 lb against 81.72 lb for the 1/4 in. one, and that is what people are describing when they say a frameless door feels more solid. If two doors share a thickness, the word tells you nothing.

do frameless shower doors leak more

Kohler publishes no leakage figure for any of these doors, so there is no published answer. What it does publish is the minimum flat each door needs on the ledge and the wall — 2-1/2 in. for the Revel, 3-1/2 in. on the wall for the Levity Bypass — and a jamb that cannot sit on a flat surface is the usual cause of a door that weeps.

what thickness glass is best for a shower door

The doors here are 1/4 in. (6 mm) and 5/16 in. (8 mm), and Kohler sells 3/8 in. elsewhere in the range. Thicker glass flexes less and feels more solid, and it roughly doubles the weight — so the right answer depends on the wall it is going on as much as on the look you want.

are semi-frameless shower doors a real category

Not a certified one. Framed, semi-frameless and frameless are all marketing descriptions of how much metal you can see, with no third-party standard behind any of them. The standards that do exist cover safe breakage — ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201 — and every door worth buying names them.
