The best shower curtain hooks and rings

The cheapest part of a shower curtain is the part that decides whether the curtain glides or snags, whether you need one rod or two, and whether the rod stays up.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

Zenna Home Double Roller Shower Hooks, Set of 12

The short answer

Buy a double roller hook — Zenna’s 96SS is the one we would pick. The roller stops the curtain snagging, and the double hook hangs the curtain and the liner on one rod instead of two. If you only hang one layer, Moen’s SR2100BN rings are cheaper and come with a published lifetime warranty. Skip the decorative ball hooks.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

Zenna lists 56 of these. There are three decisions in the whole catalog

Zenna Home publishes 56 shower hooks and rings. Read the names rather than the photographs and almost all of that variety turns out to be finishes: the same hook in chrome, bronze, nickel and matte black, four SKUs deep. Strip the colors out and the catalog answers only three questions.

  1. Does it glide? Zenna’s names tell you directly — Metal Roller, Plastic Roller Glide, Oval Gliding, Double Glide Ball, V-Glide Hinged on one side; Plastic O-ring, Closed Shower Rings, Round Metal Shower Rings and C-shaped Shower Hooks on the other.
  2. One curtain or two? Every line with Double in the name carries a curtain and a liner on the same ring. Every line without it carries one.
  3. Steel or aluminum? This is the one Zenna answers with a single word, and it is worth a section of its own below.

Nothing else in the catalog is a specification. There is no diameter, no weight, no material grade and no warranty on any of the 56.

Decision one: the roller is not a luxury

Moen is the only maker here that says out loud what the roller is for, and it is worth quoting in full because it reframes the purchase: “smooth-rolling ball bearings eliminate snagging, tugging and pulling of the curtain and work on most shower curtain and rod types”.

A plain ring has to slide, metal on metal, along the rod. When it catches — and a wet curtain catches — you pull harder, and that pull arrives at the rod as a sideways load. If the rod is screwed to the wall, nothing happens. If it is a tension rod held up by spring pressure between two walls, that is the load that eventually walks the end caps off their grip.

So the hook you choose is partly a decision about the rod. Three of our four rod picks are tension rods, which makes the roller the default recommendation on this site rather than an upgrade. A few dollars of ball bearing protects a mounting method that has no fixings at all.

Decision two: one rod or two

The arrangement everybody wants is a decorative curtain hanging outside the tub and a waterproof liner tucked inside it, so the water stays in and the nice fabric stays dry. There are two ways to get it.

The first is a double rod, which we do not recommend on a tension fitting: twice the fabric hanging off a friction grip, which is why the double tension rod is the skip pick on the rods page. The second is a double hook — one ring on the rod, two hooks hanging off it, one for each layer. Zenna sells four variations of it (Double Shower Hooks, Rustproof Aluminum Double Shower Hooks, Double Roller Shower Hooks and Rustproof Aluminum Double Roller Shower Hooks), and it costs about fifteen dollars instead of about twenty for a second rod.

If you are hanging one layer only, a double hook is wasted. Decide this before you decide anything else, because it halves the list. Whether you need a liner at all is covered here.

Decision three: “Rustproof” is a material claim, “rust resistant” is not

Zenna’s catalog is unusually disciplined about this, and once you see it you cannot unsee it. The word Rustproof appears on the aluminum lines and nowhere else. The steel hooks are sold as rust resistant on the retail listings, which describes a plating rather than the metal under it.

That difference only matters in a room that stays wet. A bathroom with a window that opens and a fan that runs will not kill a plated steel hook. A windowless internal bathroom with a fan nobody switches on is a different environment, and it is the environment where the five-dollar saving turns into spotted hooks inside a year. The same logic runs through every piece of hardware in a wet room.

Open, closed or hinged

One more distinction, and it is the reason the cheapest hooks in any shop are the cheapest. Zenna sells C-shaped Shower Hooks and Deluxe Plastic C-Shaped Shower Hooks alongside its Closed Shower Rings and V-Glide Hinged Shower Hooks.

A C-shape is an open hook: it drops over the rod and nothing holds it there. It is the fastest to fit, because you do not have to take the rod down or thread anything, and it is the one that lifts off when somebody yanks the curtain sideways. A closed ring or a hinged hook has to be opened and clipped around the rod, which is a minute of extra work once and then never again.

Buy closed or hinged unless the reason you are shopping is that you cannot take the rod down.

Every cell is either a figure the maker publishes or an admission that it does not. Four of the five rows have more of the second kind than the first, which is the honest state of this category.

The number nobody publishes

We went looking for an inner diameter on all 56 of Zenna’s hooks and rings and on Moen’s product page, and found exactly one size figure in the entire category: a 2 in. diameter, printed on the retail listing for the plain metal rings rather than in either maker’s catalog.

Moen’s answer is a sentence instead of a number — “fits most shower curtains and rod types” — which is honest about the situation and useless for checking. If you have a standard 1 in. tension rod, anything on this page will fit it. If you have a chunky decorative rod, you are buying on faith, and the plain rings are the only pick where faith is not required.

Nobody publishes a weight either, which is the same absence we hit on the rods: no maker in this corner of the bathroom rates any of it for load. Keep the curtain light and the question does not arise. What each curtain material weighs when it is wet is here.

If you rent

Every pick on this page rates Safe on our install rating, and this is the easiest Safe on the whole site: a curtain hook touches the rod and the curtain and nothing else. No drilling, no adhesive, no suction, nothing to patch, nothing to explain at a move-out inspection. How the rating works is here.

It is also the cheapest improvement in this part of the bathroom by a wide margin. A set of roller hooks costs less than a curtain and changes how the curtain feels every single day, which is a better return than most of what gets called an upgrade. The rest of the no-tools list is here.

What we have not done

We have not hung any of these hooks, pulled a curtain until a ring failed, or measured a rod. Every figure above is published by Zenna or Moen and cited at the foot of the page, and where nothing is published — inner diameter on all five, weight on all five, material on four of them — this page says so rather than estimating. The reasoning about tugging, leverage and tension rods follows from Moen’s own published description of what its ball bearings are for, and it is labeled as reasoning rather than as a test result. Prices are read live and shown with the date they were checked.

Every pick in full

4 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

Zenna Home Double Roller Shower Hooks, Set of 12

1. Best shower curtain hook

Double Roller Shower Hooks, Set of 12

Zenna Home · 96SS (chrome); 96BN (nickel) · best for a curtain and a liner on one tension rod, with nothing drilled

The two features that matter in one $20 pack of twelve: a roller so the curtain glides, and a double hook so one rod carries both layers.

Zenna Home’s Double Roller Shower Hooks are the pick because of what is in the name rather than anything clever in the engineering. Zenna lists this line as a “Double Roller Shower Hook”, and those two words are the only two decisions in this entire category: double means the curtain and the liner each get their own hook on the same ring, and roller means the thing rolls along the rod instead of dragging across it.

The double part is the one that saves you money elsewhere. The tidiest way to hang a bathroom is a decorative curtain on the outside and a liner tucked into the tub, and the usual advice is to buy a double rod for it. A double hook does the same job on the rod you already own — which matters most if that rod is a tension rod, because a second tension rod is the arrangement we specifically recommend against on the rods page.

Zenna sells it in chrome as 96SS and nickel as 96BN, twelve to a pack, which is the number of grommets in a standard shower curtain. There is no shopping to do beyond the finish.

Moen Moen Brushed Nickel Shower Curtain Rings

2. Best single rolling ring

Moen Brushed Nickel Shower Curtain Rings

Moen · SR2100BN · best for one curtain or one liner, from the only maker here that publishes a warranty

Ball bearings, twelve per pack and a limited lifetime warranty — the only warranty published anywhere in this category.

Moen’s SR2100BN is worth reading closely, because Moen is the only maker in this category that explains what the roller is actually for. Its published feature list says “smooth-rolling ball bearings eliminate snagging, tugging and pulling of the curtain and work on most shower curtain and rod types”.

That sentence is the argument of this whole page. Snagging, tugging and pulling are not cosmetic complaints: a tug is a sideways load applied to the rod, and on a tension rod held up by nothing but spring pressure, repeated tugging is exactly how the thing ends up in the tub. The hook is the cheapest part of the assembly and the one that decides how much force reaches the expensive part.

It is also the only product here with a published warranty — Moen states a “limited lifetime warranty” on a $13 pack of curtain rings — and the only one from a maker who publishes a product page with a specification document at all. Twelve per pack, brushed nickel, and Moen describes the finish as bringing “the warm look of stainless to your bath”.

Zenna Home Rustproof Aluminum Ball-shaped Shower Hooks, Set of 12

3. Best for a shower that never dries out

Rustproof Aluminum Ball-shaped Shower Hooks, Set of 12

Zenna Home · BH04AL series — BH04ALBNL (nickel), BH04ALSSL (chrome), BH04ALHBL (bronze), BH04ALBKL (matte black) · best for a windowless bathroom, a weak fan, or hooks that have already rusted once

Aluminum rather than plated steel, which is the difference between Zenna writing “Rustproof” and writing “Rust Resistant”.

Read Zenna’s catalog as a whole and one pattern jumps out: the word Rustproof appears only on the aluminum lines. Its “Rustproof Aluminum Double Roller Shower Hooks”, “Rustproof Aluminum Double Shower Hooks” and “Rustproof Horseshoe-shaped Roller Shower Hooks” all carry it. The steel ones do not; the retail listings call those rust resistant, which is a different claim wearing similar clothes.

The Rustproof Aluminum Ball-shaped hooks are the version of that pattern you can buy right now, in chrome, bronze, nickel or matte black. If your bathroom is the kind where chrome goes spotty in a year — no window, a fan nobody switches on, a shower used twice a day — the material is the spec worth paying for, and aluminum does not have an iron content to oxidize in the first place.

If the underlying problem is that the room never dries, the renter-friendly ventilation options are here — rustproof hardware treats the symptom.

Zenna Home Round Metal Shower Rings, Set of 12

4. Best cheap rings

Round Metal Shower Rings, Set of 12

Zenna Home · MHK19050 (round metal); 90SS / 90SSL (closed) · best for a drilled rod, a light liner, or a bathroom you are about to leave

Under $4 for twelve closed metal rings with a clasp — and the only listing in this category that states a diameter.

Zenna’s round metal rings are what most bathrooms already have: a closed ring, a clasp, no roller, a few dollars. We are not going to pretend they do not work. They do, and there are two situations where they are the right buy rather than the cheap one.

The first is a rod that is screwed to the wall. Everything on this page about tugging and leverage is an argument about tension mounting; a drilled rod does not care how hard you pull the curtain, so the roller buys you comfort rather than security. The second is a liner on its own, which weighs almost nothing and slides easily whatever it is hanging from.

One small distinction worth noticing: this is the single listing in the category that prints a size at all, a 2 in. diameter — and even that comes from the retail listing rather than Zenna’s own catalog. If your rod is a fat decorative one, this is the only ring on the page you can check against it before ordering.

Zenna Home Ball Shower Hooks, SSR006SS

The one to skip

Ball Shower Hooks, SSR006SS

Zenna Home · SSR006SS · best for nobody, at this price

The most expensive hook here, a single rather than a double, no published glide — and a model number Zenna no longer lists.

The SSR006SS is a decorative chrome ball hook, still on sale, and it is the clearest trap in the category. At roughly $24 it is the dearest pack on this page: more than the double roller hook, nearly twice the Moen rings, and six times the plain rings.

For that money you get one hook per grommet rather than two, so a curtain and a liner still need a second rod. You get no published glide, because ball-shaped refers to the decoration rather than a bearing. And you get no specification at all, because SSR006SS is not among the 56 hook and ring SKUs Zenna currently lists — we read the whole catalog looking for it. Its sibling finish, SSR006BN, is down to single-digit stock.

A discontinued decorative part at the top of the price list is the wrong end of every trade in this category. If you want the look, Zenna’s current “Ball-shaped Shower Hooks” line is still in the catalog, and the aluminum version above is the one we would buy.

Questions people actually ask

what is the difference between shower curtain hooks and rings

In practice the words are used interchangeably, and both makers here use both. What actually differs is the mechanism: a closed ring clips around the rod, an open C-shaped hook drops over it, and a roller or glide model runs on a bearing so the curtain does not drag. Buy on the mechanism, not the noun.

do i need double shower curtain hooks

Only if you hang a decorative curtain and a liner. A double hook carries both layers on one ring, which saves buying a second rod — and on a tension rod a second rod is a bad idea anyway. If you hang one layer, a single ring is all you need.

Do you need a liner?

are roller shower curtain hooks worth it

Yes, and Moen states the reason on its own product page: the ball bearings exist to eliminate snagging, tugging and pulling of the curtain. On a tension rod that matters twice over, because the tugging you avoid is the sideways load that pulls a tension rod down.

how many shower curtain rings do i need

Twelve. A standard shower curtain and a standard liner both have twelve grommets, which is why every pack in this category is sold as a set of twelve. A double hook set of twelve covers a curtain and a liner together.

what size shower curtain rings fit my rod

No maker publishes an answer. We checked all 56 hooks and rings in Zenna's catalog and Moen's product page: the only size figure in the category is a 2 in. diameter on one retail listing, and Moen says only that its rings fit most curtains and rod types. On a standard 1 in. rod anything here fits; on a thick decorative rod, buy the rings that state a diameter.

do shower curtain hooks rust

Plated steel ones can, in a bathroom that never dries out. Zenna uses the word Rustproof only on its aluminum lines and rust resistant on the steel ones, which is a real distinction rather than marketing: aluminum has no iron to oxidize. In a windowless bathroom, pay for the aluminum.
