Bathroom hardware that does not rust
Every shower caddy claims to be rust-proof. Only some of them publish what they are made of, and that is the only part of the claim you can check.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

Why bathrooms destroy hardware
A shower is a chemically hostile place for metal, and it is hostile in four separate ways at once.
Constant humidity. Corrosion needs water and oxygen. A bathroom supplies both, continuously, for years.
Temperature cycling. Twice a day the room goes from cool to warm and back. Coatings expand and contract at a different rate from the metal underneath, and the interface eventually fails.
Soap and shampoo. Surfactants and mild alkalis, applied daily, work at any exposed edge of a coating.
Hard water. Mineral deposits hold moisture against the surface long after the room has dried, which is why deposits and corrosion tend to appear in the same places.
The materials, ranked by how they behave
Silicone. Cannot corrode. No metal is exposed, nothing oxidizes, and heat cycling is irrelevant. The limit is strength, not durability.
Grade 304 stainless steel. Carries its own protection: chromium in the alloy forms an invisible oxide layer that reforms whenever it is scratched. That self-healing property is what makes stainless different from plated steel.
Anodized aluminum. The oxide layer is grown electrochemically into the surface rather than applied to it, so it cannot chip or flake off the way plating does. Aluminum also does not produce red rust.
Chrome-plated steel. A thin decorative layer over a substrate that corrodes readily. Intact, it looks superb. Chip it — a dropped bottle, a scrape — and the steel underneath rusts and lifts the plating from beneath.
Unpublished metal. If a maker will not say, assume the last option. Anyone using 304 stainless says so, because it costs more.
Reading the claim rather than the adjective
The words on a product page are chosen carefully, and the differences are not cosmetic.
“Rust-proof stainless steel and anodized aluminum” names both materials and makes a claim about both. That is checkable.
“304-stainless steel” names the grade. That is the strongest form of this claim available and only one maker here does it.
“Rust-resistant” with no material named is the weakest. It describes an outcome, not a composition, and there is nothing in it to verify.
Notice that simplehuman publishes rust-proof stainless on the tension caddy and simply stainless on the corner caddy. The same manufacturer choosing different words about different products is worth paying attention to.
The parts that fail first
Hardware rarely corrodes all over. It corrodes at specific places, and they are predictable.
Welds and joints. Heat during manufacture can deplete chromium locally, leaving the weld less protected than the parent metal.
Cut edges. A sheared edge exposes fresh metal. On plated steel it exposes the substrate directly.
Contact points. Where two different metals touch in the presence of water you get galvanic corrosion — the less noble metal sacrifices itself. Rubber feet and plastic spacers exist partly to prevent this.
Anywhere water sits. A shelf that holds a puddle corrodes long before one that drains. Wire-frame shelves, which simplehuman publishes across its range, are the design answer.
What you can do about it
Buy on published material. The whole point of this page. An unpublished material is an answer.
Choose designs that drain. Wire frames and drainage holes beat solid trays, every time.
Do not use abrasive cleaners on stainless. Scratching the surface removes the oxide layer faster than it reforms and leaves a texture that holds deposits.
Descale, do not scour. The white marks on stainless in a hard-water area are deposits, not corrosion. Diluted white vinegar removes them — the same method as a scaled showerhead.
All of this is renter-safe
Every product here except the corner caddy rates Safe on our install rating. Tension, silicone grip and freestanding all leave with you.
Which makes material quality a better investment than it looks. Hardware you can take to the next flat is worth buying properly once, and a stainless tension pole will outlive several tenancies. The move-out checklist covers the rest.

1. Best published construction
simplehuman Tension Shower Caddy, 9 ft
simplehuman · Tension Shower Caddy 9 ft · best for something that lives in the wettest part of the room permanently
“Rust-proof stainless steel and anodized aluminum” with a 5-year warranty — a material claim plus a term to back it.
The simplehuman tension caddy publishes what it is made of rather than only what it resists: “Constructed from rust-proof stainless steel and anodized aluminum”.
Two materials, two jobs. Stainless steel carries the load and the shelves. Anodized aluminum gives a hard oxide layer grown into the surface rather than a coating sitting on top of it, which is the difference that matters in a shower.
The 5-Year Warranty is the part that gives the claim weight. A maker willing to stand behind a product in a shower for five years has a view about how it will age.
Note the caveat that applies to everything here: rust-proof is not the same as stain-proof. Hard water leaves deposits on stainless steel, and those wipe off.

Why: The pole holds itself up with spring tension between the floor and the ceiling. There is no fixing, and the rubber feet are the only thing that touches the room.
Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. simplehuman, Tension Shower Caddy 9 ft. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.
What’s wrong with it
It needs a ceiling within its 6-to-9-foot range above a usable floor spot, which not every bathroom has.
What we can’t tell you
simplehuman publishes no grade of stainless steel — 304 and 316 behave differently in a wet room, and we cannot tell you which this is.

2. Best published grade
WarmlyYours Ibiza Freestanding Towel Warmer
WarmlyYours · TWS5-IBZ06PP · best for knowing exactly which alloy you are buying
“304-stainless steel” — the only product on this site whose maker publishes the actual grade.
The WarmlyYours Ibiza is the only product in the catalog where the maker names the alloy: “304-stainless steel”, published in “Polished Stainless Steel” and “Matte Black” finishes.
Grade 304 is the standard austenitic stainless used for kitchen and bathroom fittings. It resists corrosion well in fresh water and humid air, which is exactly the environment here.
The distinction worth knowing is 304 against 316. Grade 316 adds molybdenum and resists chloride corrosion considerably better, which matters near salt air. In a normal domestic bathroom, 304 is appropriate and is what most quality fittings use.
A published grade is a checkable claim. “Stainless steel” without a grade covers everything from 304 down to alloys that will spot within a year.

3. The material that cannot rust
Tooletries The Arnold Shower Hook
Tooletries · The Arnold · best for sidestepping the question entirely
“Heavy-duty stainless steel” encased in “100% waterproof silicone” — no exposed metal to corrode.
The Arnold takes the other route: put the metal inside something that water cannot reach.
Tooletries publishes “heavy-duty stainless steel” with “100% waterproof silicone”. The silicone is the wetted surface; the steel carries the 4 lb load from inside it.
Silicone does not corrode, does not oxidize and is unbothered by heat cycling, soap or shampoo. It is the most chemically indifferent material in the bathroom.
The trade is capacity. Silicone grip holds “up to 4lbs” and needs a published surface type — flat, smooth, shiny and non-porous. Rust immunity does not buy you strength.

Why: Tooletries publishes it as “completely removable and reusable” with a silicone grip rather than an adhesive. Nothing cures, so nothing has to be peeled off a wall later.

What’s wrong with it
Silicone attracts dust and lint in a way metal does not, so it looks grubby sooner even though nothing is wrong with it.

The one to skip
simplehuman Corner Shower Caddy
simplehuman · BT1064 · best for nothing, until simplehuman publishes how it mounts
“Stainless steel and anodized aluminum” — and no published mounting method, which in a wet room is the question that matters.
The materials are fine. The skip is about everything else that is missing.
simplehuman publishes “Constructed from stainless steel and anodized aluminum”, adjustable wire-frame shelves and a 5-year warranty. Note what is absent from the material claim compared to the tension caddy: no rust-proof.
More importantly, the mounting method is not published on the product page. Neither are the dimensions, the weight capacity or the shelf count.
In a corner unit, how it mounts is the entire question — suction, adhesive, tension and hanging behave completely differently and age completely differently. A corner caddy that might be suction-mounted is a bottle waiting to fall.
We rate it Ask first for exactly that reason, and we would buy the tension caddy instead.

Questions people actually ask
what bathroom hardware does not rust
Silicone cannot corrode at all, grade 304 stainless steel forms a self-healing oxide layer, and anodized aluminum has its oxide grown into the surface rather than plated on. Chrome-plated steel looks the same and rusts from underneath once the plating chips.
is stainless steel rust proof in a bathroom
Good grades are highly resistant rather than immune, and the grade matters. 304 is standard for bathroom fittings; 316 resists chloride corrosion better and matters near salt air. Most makers do not publish the grade at all.
why does my shower caddy have rust spots
Usually a chrome-plated or low-grade substrate showing through a chip in the plating, or deposits from hard water that look like corrosion but wipe off with dilute white vinegar. Check whether the marks come away before assuming the worst.
what is anodized aluminum
Aluminum whose natural oxide layer has been thickened electrochemically so it is part of the surface rather than a coating on top. It cannot chip or flake off the way plating does, and aluminum produces no red rust.
