Chrome vs brushed nickel bathroom faucets
Both finishes are on the same faucets from the same makers. The difference shows up on a Tuesday morning, in the light, after somebody washed their hands.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
What the two finishes are
Chrome is a bright, mirror-like plating. Brushed nickel is a satin, slightly warmer finish with a fine grain. Both are applied over the same brass or zinc bodies, so this is a surface decision rather than a quality one.
Water spots: the one real difference
A mirror finish shows every dried droplet; a grained one scatters the light and hides them. Moen sells a finish built around that fact, published as resisting “fingerprints and water spots for a cleaner looking bath”.
The spots themselves are minerals left behind when water evaporates. USGS explains why some homes get more of them: “Hardness is caused by compounds of calcium and magnesium”, and classifies water above 180 mg/L as very hard. What can and cannot be done about hardness is here.
Durability, in the only published claim
Delta is the one maker here publishing a finish guarantee: Brilliance finishes are “guaranteed not to corrode, tarnish or discolor” and were tested against more than 100 household cleaners. Moen and Kohler publish finish names and lifetime faucet warranties, without a comparable finish test.
Nobody publishes a plating thickness, which is the figure that would actually let you compare finishes across brands.
Cleaning
Both finishes want the same thing: a soft cloth and water, dried off. Abrasives and acidic descalers are what dull a finish, and Delta’s steel-wool claim is the exception rather than an invitation.
The practical difference is frequency. Chrome looks worse sooner and looks perfect once cleaned; brushed nickel looks acceptable for longer and never quite gleams.
Matching the rest of the bathroom
Chrome is the easiest finish to match, because everything is made in it — towel bars, paper holders, shower heads, hinges. Brushed nickel is nearly as common but the tone varies between brands, so buy accessories from the same range where you can. The towel bars we rank come in six finishes each.
Which to choose
Brushed nickel for hard water, family bathrooms and anyone who does not want to wipe a faucet daily — and specify Moen’s Spot Resist version if you are buying Moen. Chrome for a brighter, more traditional look, the easiest matching, and a finish that cleans back to new.
If you rent
Faucets rate Owner-only on our install rating: swapping one means disconnecting the property’s supplies and drain.
Every pick in full
4 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. Best brushed nickel
Conway One-Handle High Arc Bathroom Faucet
Moen · WS84923 · best for hard water and busy family bathrooms
Moen's Spot Resist brushed nickel finish on a 4 in. centerset faucet, WaterSense and ADA compliant.
Moen’s Conway comes in chrome or Spot Resist brushed nickel, which makes it the cleanest way to see what the finish choice is worth: one faucet, one price, two finishes. Moen names the finish on the product page but publishes no claim there about what it resists, so treat Spot Resist as a finish option rather than a tested specification.
The faucet itself publishes WaterSense compliance, ADA compliance, a 4 in. centerset design, a 5.13 in. spout reach and a limited lifetime warranty. Note the drain assembly is plastic on this model.

Why: Replacing a faucet means shutting off the supplies, disconnecting and reconnecting both feeds and the drain. No holes are made, but the plumbing belongs to the property and this is not a tenant's change to make.
Read from published documentation, not from fitting one. Moen — Conway WS84923, published WaterSense and ADA compliance, centerset design, spout reach, drain and warranty. How the verdict is derived: renter-safe ratings explained.
What’s wrong with it
Moen publishes no flow rate for it, and the pop-up drain is plastic with a lift rod.
What we can’t tell you
No cycle test or finish thickness published.

2. Best chrome, and the finish guarantee
Trinsic Single Handle Bathroom Faucet
Delta · 559LF-MPU · best for a bright, modern faucet with published numbers
1.2 gpm and a 500,000-use valve, in chrome or Delta's Brilliance stainless.
Delta’s Trinsic is the faucet we recommend on the bathroom faucet page, and it comes in chrome as well as stainless, champagne bronze, matte black, polished nickel and Venetian bronze.
Delta’s finish claim is the strongest published here: Brilliance finishes are “guaranteed not to corrode, tarnish or discolor”, were “tested against more than 100 household cleaners”, and Delta says they “can even withstand repeated scouring with steel wool”.
The faucet publishes “1.2 gpm @ 60 psi” and a Diamond valve tested to “500,000 uses”.

4. Most finish choice
Genta LX One-Handle High Arc Bathroom Faucet
Moen · 6702 · best for matching black or gold hardware instead
Chrome, matte black, brushed nickel and bronzed gold on one high-arc faucet.
The chrome-or-nickel question is not the only one. Moen’s Genta LX publishes four finishes — chrome, matte black, brushed nickel and bronzed gold — with a 4.56 in. spout reach and a metal pop-up drain.
If the rest of your hardware is black or gold, the faucet finish should follow it rather than the other way around.

Questions people actually ask
does brushed nickel show water spots
Less than chrome, which is why Moen sells a finish for it: Spot Resist brushed nickel is published as resisting fingerprints and water spots for a cleaner looking bath.
is chrome or brushed nickel better for hard water
Brushed nickel, because a grained finish hides mineral spots that a mirror finish shows. The spots come from calcium and magnesium, which USGS identifies as the cause of hardness.
do chrome and brushed nickel match
They can be mixed deliberately, but tones vary between brands, so matching within one collection is safer. Chrome is the easiest finish to find across every accessory.
which faucet finish is most durable
Delta publishes the only durability claim among the brands we cover: Brilliance finishes are guaranteed not to corrode, tarnish or discolor, and were tested against more than 100 household cleaners. No maker publishes a plating thickness.
