simplehuman vs OXO toilet brushes

Both are better than the supermarket brush beside them. They disagree about what happens after you put the brush back.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A toilet brush standing in an open toilet bowl, with cleaner and a plunger on the floor beside it

The short answer

Buy the simplehuman for the head and the warranty: a crescent head for the rim, a stainless rod, a magnetic collar that carries cover and brush together, and 5 years of cover. Buy the OXO for a small bathroom — a compact canister that opens itself and has a ventilated drip tray, at roughly half the price.

The part that decides it: what happens after you use it

A toilet brush spends about a minute a week being a brush and the rest of the week being a wet object in a container. The two makers take different routes to the same problem.

OXO ventilates: slots in the drip tray so water evaporates, and a door that shuts on its own. It is the better answer if the brush lives in a cupboard or a corner with no airflow.

simplehuman contains: a slim dome cover held to the rod by a magnet, so brush and cover travel together and the drips stay inside. It is the better answer if the brush gets carried between bathrooms.

Head shape is not a marketing detail

The crescent head exists because the underside of the rim is where limescale and staining start, and a round head cannot reach it without being pushed flat. A tapered head compromises: it gets further into the trap than a crescent does, and less far under the rim.

Both take replacement heads, which is the specification that decides whether you buy this once or every year. The full brush ranking is here.

Warranty, and what it tells you

simplehuman publishes 5 years. OXO publishes no term in the listing copy we could retrieve. On a product with a moving door, a removable head and a handle you grip wet, a published warranty term is worth something — and it is roughly what the price difference buys.

Replacement heads are the whole economics

Both makers sell replacement heads, and that single fact changes what these products cost over a decade. simplehuman’s head screws off and on; OXO’s turns counterclockwise to remove. A brush you re-head every couple of years is a fitting you buy once; a sealed brush is a fitting you replace whole every time the bristles splay.

Neither maker publishes a replacement interval, which is honest of them — it depends entirely on how hard the bowl gets scrubbed. The signal to watch is the bristles failing to return to shape after use, because at that point the brush is pushing rather than scrubbing.

The holder matters as much as the brush

Most people choose on the brush and then live with the holder, which is backwards: the holder is what sits in view every day and what smells if it holds water. OXO’s answer is ventilation and a door that opens itself; simplehuman’s is a slim dome and a magnetic collar that keeps cover and brush together.

Either approach beats the open plastic pot most bathrooms have, which is a container for the water that came off the brush. The trash can that sits next to it is ranked here.

Who should buy which

simplehuman if the toilet has a pronounced rim, if the brush gets moved around the house, or if you would rather buy one thing for five years.

OXO if the gap beside the pan is narrow, if the brush lives somewhere with no airflow, or if you want most of the design thinking at half the money.

Who should skip both

If the marks in the bowl are mineral rather than organic, no brush fixes them — that is a descaling job, and it comes back unless the water does too. Hard water and what it does to fittings is covered here.

simplehuman Toilet Brush

1. Best brush head

Toilet Brush

simplehuman · BT1083 · best for cleaning under the rim, and keeping the drips off the floor

A crescent-shaped head on a stainless rod, with a magnetic collar holding the cover to the brush and a 5-year warranty.

simplehuman’s brush is shaped for the part of the bowl that actually gets missed: a “crescent-shaped brush head easily reaches hard-to-clean areas around the rim”, with “Stiff outer bristles…ideal for scrubbing tough stains” on a stainless steel rod.

The detail that changes daily use is the magnetic collar, which “secures the cover to the stainless steel rod so you can carry them together — without drips”. If the brush lives in one bathroom and gets used in two, that is the feature you notice.

The head screws off for replacement, and simplehuman publishes a 5-year warranty — on a toilet brush.

OXO Good Grips Compact Toilet Brush & Canister

2. Best for a small bathroom

Good Grips Compact Toilet Brush & Canister

OXO · Compact Toilet Brush & Canister · best for a narrow gap beside the toilet, and drying between uses

A compact canister whose door opens as you lift the brush, over a ventilated drip tray, at about half the price.

OXO’s compact brush puts its thinking into the canister. OXO publishes an “Automatic canister door: Opens as the Toilet Brush is lifted and closes when stored”, so the wet brush is never standing in the open, and a “drip tray with ventilation slots allows excess water to evaporate quickly”.

The brush itself is a “tapered brush head with sturdy bristles” on a “comfortable non-slip handle”, and replacement heads are sold — the old one turns counterclockwise to come off.

OXO publishes the footprint only as “compact”, with no measurement, which is a shame on the product whose main argument is size.

Questions people actually ask

are expensive toilet brushes worth it

The two things you are paying for are a head shaped for the rim and a published warranty — simplehuman states five years. If neither matters to you, OXO's canister does the storage job well at about half the price.

which toilet brush dries best

OXO publishes a drip tray with ventilation slots so water evaporates quickly, and a door that opens as the brush is lifted and closes when it is stored.

can you replace the head on a toilet brush

On both of these, yes. simplehuman's head screws off and on; OXO sells replacement heads and the old one turns counterclockwise to remove.

how often should you replace a toilet brush head

Neither maker publishes an interval. Replace it when the bristles splay or stop returning to shape, which is the point at which it stops scrubbing and starts spreading.
