The best toilet paper holders
The fixture you use most without looking at it. The questions that matter are how the roll goes on, and whether the holder stays in the wall.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

How the roll goes on
This is the everyday difference between holders. An open arm, like the Trinsic, lets the roll slide on from the side. A two-post holder, like the Devonshire, carries the roll between two wall mounts. The adhesive Command holder takes one standard roll on a plate stuck to the wall.
Where to put it: the ADA numbers
The ADA Standards give the most precise published placement: “Toilet paper dispensers shall comply with 309.4 and shall be 7 inches (180 mm) minimum and 9 inches (230 mm) maximum in front of the water closet measured to the centerline of the dispenser. The outlet of the dispenser shall be 15 inches (380 mm) minimum and 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum above the finish floor and shall not be located behind grab bars.”
Those rules are written for accessible toilets in places the ADA covers. In a home they are a published starting point, and the last clause is worth keeping anywhere: a holder behind a grab bar is a holder you cannot reach. More on placement is in the no-drill guide.
Why holders pull out of the wall
Pulling paper off a roll yanks sideways on the fixings, and holders set into hollow drywall with light anchors work loose. Delta’s advice for its accessories is to use plastic or lead anchors in tile and toggle bolts in plaster or drywall where there is no wood blocking. If an old holder has already pulled out, fill and repair the wall before the new one goes up.
Projection
The Trinsic stands 3-5/16 in. from the wall, the Cassidy 3-5/8 in., and the Devonshire 3-11/16 in. Beside a toilet in a narrow room, the shallower holder is the one your knee will not find.
Matching the set
The Devonshire matches Kohler’s Devonshire faucets; the Trinsic matches Delta’s Trinsic towel bar, ring and faucet. The towel bars are here, and storage above the toilet is here.
If you rent
The drilled holders rate Ask first on our install rating: the holes can be filled, but ask first. The Command holder rates Safe.

1. Best overall
Devonshire Toilet Paper Holder
Kohler · K-10554 · best for traditional bathrooms, and a first-time install
Brass and zinc, 10 in. wide, 3-11/16 in. from the wall, with the template and tools included.
The Kohler Devonshire toilet paper holder is “Premium metal construction” in brass and zinc, and Kohler includes what a first install needs: “Installation template and tools included”.
It is a two-post design, 10 in. wide with a 2-3/8 in. round escutcheon at each end, standing 3-11/16 in. from the wall. It comes in four finishes and matches the Devonshire faucet, our top pick on the widespread faucet page.

2. Best open arm
Trinsic Tissue Holder

An open-arm holder 7 in. wide and 3-5/16 in. from the wall; the roll slides on from the side.
The Delta Trinsic tissue holder is an open arm, which is the easiest style to reload: no spring bar to compress and no post to unscrew.
It measures “1-1/8 in. H x 3-5/16 in. D x 7 in. W”, comes with its template and hardware, and matches the Trinsic towel bar and ring.

3. Best no-drill
Command Bath Toilet Paper Holder
3M Command · B5005604033 (satin nickel) / B5005604034 (matte black) · best for renters, and walls you can't drill
One holder and two water-resistant strips 3M rates at 3 and 5 lb, with a published hour's wait before use.
The Command Bath Toilet Paper Holder is our top pick on the no-drill page. 3M publishes the surfaces it suits — “glass, mirror, tile, wood and painted surfaces” — and a removal with “no holes, no sticky residue”.
A roll of paper is a light load for strips rated at 3 and 5 lb. The rule is patience: press for 30 seconds and “wait 1 hour before use”.

Why: 3M publishes a stretch-release removal that comes away without taking paint or tile glaze with it. The two rules people skip are the ones that decide whether it stays up: press for 30 seconds, and leave it a full hour before loading it.

The one to skip
Cassidy Tissue Holder
Delta · 79750 · best for completing an existing cassidy set
Delta's page does not say what style of holder it is, which is the thing you most need to know.
The Cassidy tissue holder publishes dimensions of “2-1/2 in. H x 3-5/8 in. D x 8-3/8 in. W”, steel and stainless steel construction, and a lifetime limited warranty.
What it does not publish is the holder style: whether the roll goes on an open arm, a spring bar or between two posts. That decides how you change a roll every few days, and it is the first thing we would want to know. The Trinsic from the same maker tells you; the Cassidy does not.
It was also out of stock on Delta’s store when we checked.

Questions people actually ask
where should a toilet paper holder be placed
The ADA Standards put it 7 to 9 inches in front of the toilet, measured to the centerline of the holder, with the outlet 15 to 48 inches above the floor and never behind a grab bar. They are written for accessible toilets, but they are the most precise published figures.
what is the easiest toilet paper holder to change
An open-arm holder, which lets the roll slide on from the side. Delta publishes its Trinsic 75950 as an open-arm design.
can you install a toilet paper holder without drilling
Yes. The Command Bath Toilet Paper Holder mounts on water-resistant strips 3M rates at 3 and 5 lb; press for 30 seconds and wait 1 hour before use.
why does my toilet paper holder keep coming out of the wall
Usually the anchors. Pulling paper loads the fixings sideways, and light anchors in hollow drywall work loose. Delta advises toggle bolts in plaster or drywall where there is no wood blocking.
