What does OEKO-TEX certified mean on a towel?

Three labels turn up on towel listings and they certify three different things. Here is what each one actually tests, in its own words.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A close-up of folded blue terry cotton towels

The short answer

It means the item passed a chemical safety test. OEKO-TEX publishes that “Every item bearing the STANDARD 100 label is certified as having passed safety tests for the presence of harmful substances”, with every thread, button and accessory tested against over 1,000 substances. It is not an organic certification, and it lasts one year.

What STANDARD 100 tests

OEKO-TEX is a testing system, and STANDARD 100 is its best-known label. In OEKO-TEX’s own words: “Every item bearing the STANDARD 100 label is certified as having passed safety tests for the presence of harmful substances.”

The scope is unusually broad for a textile label: “Every thread, button and accessory have been tested against a list of over 1,000 harmful substances.” A certified article is published as “harmless to human health” and compliant with “global regulations, including the annexes XVII and XIV of the REACH directive, CPSIA and the ECHA-SVHC candidate list”.

What it does not test

It says nothing about how the cotton was farmed. OEKO-TEX runs separate standards for that — an ORGANIC COTTON standard, and MADE IN GREEN for environmental and social criteria — which is the clearest possible signal that STANDARD 100 is not an organic label.

It also says nothing about absorbency, durability, GSM, dry time or shrinkage. A 240 GSM towel and a 750 GSM towel can both be certified; the label is about chemistry, not performance.

It expires

Certification is valid for one year, so a certified product line is one a maker re-tests annually. A brand that mentions OEKO-TEX in general marketing copy rather than on the product page is worth a second look — the certificate belongs to an article, not to a company.

OEKO-TEX against GOTS, on a towel listing

  • OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: harmful substances in the finished item, every component tested, renewed yearly. Published by ONSEN and Parachute on the towels we cover.
  • GOTS: organic fiber content and processing through the supply chain. Published by Coyuchi, and by Parachute on its organic resort stripe towels, which also publish a GOTS certificate number.
  • Neither: plenty of good towels carry no certification at all. It is an absence of a claim, not evidence of a problem.

The organic cotton towels are ranked here, with the certifications each one publishes.

Does it matter for a towel?

A towel sits against skin, wet, every day, which is the case for caring about residual chemistry. What the label does not do is tell you the towel is good: for that you want a published weight, a published size and a weave that suits your bathroom.

Our position is the same as with NSF/ANSI 177 on shower filters: a certification is a fact you can check, so we report exactly what it covers and refuse to let it stand in for the things it does not.

ONSEN ONSEN Sculpted Terry Bath Towel

1. OEKO-TEX, stated plainly

ONSEN Sculpted Terry Bath Towel

ONSEN · Sculpted Terry Bath Towel · best for a certified towel with the fiber named

Published as OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, in 100% USA-grown cotton, 28 x 55 in.

ONSEN’s sculpted terry towel publishes “OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified” alongside “100% USA-grown cotton” and a measured size of “28 x 55 in or 71 x 140 cm”.

That combination — a named certification, a named fiber and a published size — is what a listing should look like. Most towel listings give you one of the three.

Renter verdict: SafeNothing is drilled and nothing is wired in. Fit it, and take it with you.

Why: Nothing is fitted or fixed. The rating exists to be honest about the whole catalog, and for a towel the honest answer is that there is nothing to install.

Questions people actually ask

does oeko-tex mean organic

No. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certifies that an item passed safety tests for harmful substances. OEKO-TEX runs separate standards for organic cotton and for environmental and social criteria, which is how you can tell STANDARD 100 is not an organic label.

Harmful substances. OEKO-TEX publishes that every thread, button and accessory is tested against a list of over 1,000 harmful substances, and that certified articles comply with REACH annexes XVII and XIV, CPSIA and the ECHA-SVHC candidate list.

how long does oeko-tex certification last

One year. Certification applies to the article rather than the brand, so a certified range is one the maker re-tests annually.
