Waffle vs terry towels
Two ways of turning flat cotton into something absorbent. They behave very differently once the water is in them.

The short answer

The two structures, side by side
Terry is a pile weave. Extra warp threads are pulled up into loops that stand proud of the base cloth, and those loops do the absorbing. Pack more of them in, or make them longer, and the towel holds more water and feels plusher. It also gets heavier and slower to dry, and every one of those things moves together.
Waffle is a structural weave rather than a pile. The threads are arranged into a raised grid with recessed squares between, forming pockets. There is no pile, so significantly less cotton is present, and the pockets are open to the air on the surface rather than buried in a dense field of loops.
What that means at the rail
A wet terry towel is a mass of individually saturated loops packed tightly together. The loops in the middle are shielded from air by the loops around them, so drying happens from the outside in and takes a long time.
A wet waffle towel holds water in shallow open pockets with air on both sides of a much thinner fabric. There is no interior for water to hide in.
Neither maker publishes a drying time, so we are not going to invent one. What we can tell you is the mechanism and the published weights, and let you draw the obvious conclusion.
The absorbency question, answered honestly
A common claim is that waffle towels absorb more than terry. We have no published test data supporting that, and mechanically it is hard to justify — terry has more cotton and more surface area.
What is defensible is that waffle absorbs enough, and returns to service far sooner. For one body after one shower, both formats have ample capacity. The difference shows up eighteen hours later, when one of them is dry and the other is not.
If a page tells you waffle is more absorbent, ask where the number came from. We could not find one.
Which to buy, by bathroom
No window, no working extractor fan, one rail. Waffle, without hesitation. This is the failure case that produces musty towels and it is the one the open weave was made for.
Good ventilation, plenty of rail space, and you want a towel to feel like an indulgence. Terry. The bathroom is doing the drying work for you, so you can afford the plusher format.
Small linen cupboard. Waffle packs to roughly half the bulk of a comparable terry towel, and folded storage is a real constraint in a small flat.
Sensitive skin. Terry. A soft loop pile is gentler than a textured lattice, and this is the one argument for terry that has nothing to do with luxury.
Neither structure appeals. There is a third: cotton gauze, several fine flat layers woven together instead of loops or ridges, lighter than both and usually sold in a larger size. Terry against gauze is compared here.
What neither format fixes
Weave is one variable in a system, and it is not the biggest one. A waffle towel folded in half on a heated-in-summer-only rail in a bathroom with a painted-shut window will still be damp tomorrow.
The order of impact, largest first: air movement in the room, then how much of the towel is exposed, then weight, then weave. Two towels per person and a rail with several bars beat any upgrade you can make to the fabric. Heated rails are here, and the full fix list is here.

2 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. The waffle
ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Towel
ONSEN · Supima Waffle Bath Towel · best for bathrooms that do not ventilate well
16.5 oz across 31 x 57 in, open lattice weave, published weight you can compare.
The Supima waffle is the format that wins on the metric this site cares about. ONSEN publishes “16.5 oz or 470 g” across “31 x 57 in”, in “100% USA-grown extra-long-staple Supima® cotton”.
The waffle structure is a grid of raised squares with recessed pockets. Water sits in the pockets, held by surface tension across a large open area rather than buried in a dense pile, so the air gets at almost all of it.
It also packs smaller, which matters if your entire linen storage is one shelf above the toilet.

What’s wrong with it
It feels textured, not fluffy. Some people find a waffle towel slightly scratchy for the first few washes, and it never becomes plush.
What we can’t tell you
No GSM published, and no drying-time measurement from the maker.

2. The terry
ONSEN Sculpted Terry Bath Towel
ONSEN · Sculpted Terry Bath Towel · best for anyone who wants a towel to feel like a towel
28 x 55 in of short-loop sculpted terry, published as drying faster than conventional terry — and slower than waffle.
Terry is loops: thousands of raised cotton loops standing off a woven base, giving an enormous absorbent surface in a small footprint.
ONSEN’s Sculpted Terry shortens those loops deliberately. Published at “28 x 55 in” in “100% USA-grown cotton”, it is the middle position — recognizably plush, quicker to dry than a deep-pile hotel towel.
Conventional long-loop terry is the format the whole world uses, and it is genuinely better at the first job. It moves water off skin faster and it feels better doing it.

Why: Nothing is fitted or fixed. The rating exists to be honest about the whole catalog, and for a towel the honest answer is that there is nothing to install.

What’s wrong with it
ONSEN publishes no weight for it, so on a page that compares by published weight it cannot actually be measured against the waffle.
What we can’t tell you

Questions people actually ask
are waffle towels more absorbent than terry
No published test data supports that, and mechanically terry has more cotton and more surface area. What waffle does is release water much faster, which is a different and usually more useful property.
do waffle towels dry faster
Yes, by structure: an open lattice exposes almost all the held water to air, while a terry pile shields its inner loops. Neither maker publishes a drying time, so the mechanism is the evidence rather than a stopwatch figure.
what is sculpted terry
Terry with deliberately shortened loops. ONSEN publishes it as drying faster than conventional terry while keeping the plush feel of a pile weave — the middle position between a hotel towel and a waffle.
